Formulating design principles is the primary mechanism to codify design knowledge which elevates its meaning to a general level and applicability. Although we can observe a great variety of abstraction levels in available design principles, spanning from more situated to more generic levels, there is only limited knowledge about the corresponding (dis-)advantages of using a certain level of abstraction. That is problematic because it hinders researchers in making informed decisions regarding the (intended) level of abstraction and practitioners in being oriented whether the principles are already contextualized or still require effort to apply them within their situation. Against this backdrop, this paper (1) explores different abstraction levels based on a sample of 69 design principles from the chatbot domain as well as (2) provides a preliminary positioning framework and lessons learned. We aim to complement methodological guidance and strengthen the principles' applicability, leading to knowledge reuse. © 2022 17th International Conference on Wirtschaftsinformatik, WI 2022. Modern FPGAs (Field Programmable Gate Arrays) are becoming increasingly important when it comes to embedded system development. Within these FPGAs, soft-core processors are often used to solve a wide range of different tasks. Soft-core processors are a cost-effective and time-efficient way to realize embedded systems. The trend for soft-core processors, as well as mainstream CPUs (central processing units), leads to multi-core architectures. Both the necessary memory architectures and the compilers play an important role in this process. In this paper, a novel method that aims at minimizing the necessary memory resources on the FPGA while maximizing the processing speed of any given algorithm is described. In the first step, an application-specializable multi-soft-core processor architecture is presented that is capable of solving problems while adhering to hard real-time deadlines. Its special architecture and other necessary features are discussed. Furthermore, a method for the generation of optimized machine code for each processor core as well as hard real-time compatible deadlock handling mechanisms are presented. Selected algorithms are implemented to demonstrate the functionality and efficiency of the realized approach for different configurations of the multi-soft-core processor architecture.

Auto-completion of textual inputs benefits software developers using IDEs. However, graphical modeling tools used to design software do not yet provide such functionality. The challenges of recommending auto-completions for graphical modeling activities are largely unexplored. Recommending such auto-completions requires detecting meaningful partly completed activities, tolerating variance in user actions, and determining the most relevant activities that a user wants to perform. We propose RapMOD, an approach that works in the background while a developer is creating or evolving models and handles all these challenges. Users' editing operations are analyzed and matched to a predefined but extensible catalog of common modeling activities for structural UML models. We found RapMOD to significantly reduce modeling effort. © 2017 IEEE.

Traceability is an important quality of software requirements and allows to describe and follow their life throughout a development project. The importance of traceable requirements is reflected by the fact that requirements standards, safety regulations, and maturity models explicitly demand for it. In practice, traceability is created and maintained by humans, which make mistakes. In result, existing traces are potentially of dubious quality but serve as the foundation for high impact development decisions. We found in previous studies that practitioners miss clear guidance on how to systematically assess the quality of existing traces. In this paper, we review the elements involved in establishing traceability in a development project and derive a quality model that specifies per element the acceptable state (Traceability Gate) and unacceptable deviations (Traceability Problem) from this state. We describe and formally define how both, the acceptable states and the unacceptable deviations can be detected in order to enable practitioners to systematically assess their project's traceability. We evaluated the proposed model through an expert survey. The participating experts considered the quality model to be complete and attested that its quality criteria are of high relevance. We further found that the experts weight the occurrence of different traceability problems with different criticality. This information can be used to quantify the impact of traceability problems and to prioritize the assessment of traceability elements.

Auto-completion of textual inputs when using IDEs benefits software development experts and novices. Researchers demonstrated that auto-completion is beneficial for graphical modeling tasks as well. However, supporting software development by auto-completing UML modeling activities remains largely unexplored by research and unsupported by modeling tools. By matching editing operations to activity patterns, partly performed modeling activities can be recognized and automatically completed. This paper proposes an approach that computes auto-completions for partly performed modeling activities while a developer is creating or evolving UML models. Selected auto-completions can be previewed and adjusted before being executed. We claim, that this approach can improve developers' modeling efficiency. Therefore, we assessed our approach based on a catalog of common modeling activities for structural UML models and found that effort for conducting defined modeling activities can be reduced significantly. © 2014 ACM.

Patterns for visual GUI design propagate the specification of user interfaces with proven usability and motivate model-based development processes with increased reuse of GUI component compositions. However, a common structure, that captures all the reusability and variability demands, neither has been established for the descriptive form nor the generative kind of user interface patterns. Dedicated GUI specification languages like UIML and UsiXML fail to express pattern definitions that can be instantiated in varying contexts. Thus, model-based processes are required to introduce own media to store those patterns. With our approach, we review the state of the art for generative user interface pattern definition and derive requirements which we refine by a Global Analysis. Finally, we developed a model that accommodates primary factors and their impacts towards the concept for a more sophisticated generative user interface pattern definition. © 2013 Springer-Verlag.

Typical software engineering activities, such as program maintenance or reengineering, result in frequent changes of software which are often accompanied by unintended side effects. Consequently, research on impact analysis put forth approaches to assess the adverse effects of changes. However, understanding and implementing these changes is often aggravated by inconsistencies and dependencies between different types of software artifacts. Likewise, most impact analysis approaches are not able to detect the possible side effects of changes when different types of software artifacts are involved. We present an approach that combines impact analysis and multi-perspective modeling for analyzing the change propagation between heterogeneous software artifacts. Our approach assists developers with understanding the consequences of changes by identifying impacted artifacts and determining how they are affected. We utilize a model repository for combining UML models, Java source code, and JUnit tests by mapping them on a unifying meta-model. We introduce a novel impact propagation approach that analyzes dependencies between software artifacts according to the type of change which is applied upon them. Our approach is implemented by a set of impact propagation rules which are evaluated by a case study.

Testing process-based information systems is cost intensive and challenging due to rapid technological advancement and increasing complexity of processes. A number of existing process-based test generation approaches use process code for test generation. They operate on lower levels of abstraction and start the test activity later in the development cycle, which is not feasible. Other model-based testing approaches focus only on the individual behavior of a process. They do not consider the structural aspects and process interactions;thus, are not able to capture different test views. In this paper, we present a model-driven test generation approach that uses UML class and component diagrams to model the structural aspects, and BPMN collaboration diagrams to model the collaborative behavior of business processes. Models from both views are used as input to generate the test specifications, which are expressed as of UML 2 Testing profile (U2TP) elements. To identify the correspondences between the process structure, behavior and the test view, we analyze the semantics of UML, BPMN, and U2TP. We developed mapping rules to realize these correspondences for the generation of U2TP test specifications from UML and BPMN models. Our mapping rules are implemented as model transformations using the VIATRA model transformation framework. We illustrate the approach using an example scenario to demonstrate its applicability. Changes play a central role in software evolution, where the types of changes are as multifarious as their consequences. When changing software, impact analysis and regression testing are required to preserve the quality of the system. However, without a consistent classification of types of change operations, a well-founded impact analysis methodology cannot be developed. Existing works which analyze and apply change types are typically limited to a certain aspect of software, e.g. source code or architecture. They also lack a thorough investigation of change types, which lead to duplicated proposals and the absence of a consistent taxonomy. In this paper, we review the usage of change types for impact analysis and regression testing, and illustrate how both activities are affected by different types of changes. Therefore, we outline how existing work deals with different types and granularities of changes. Our main contribution is a generic, graph-based description of changes which distinguishes between atomic and composite change types. We show how existing change types and classifications can be mapped onto our proposed approach and change taxonomy. Finally, we illustrate how our proposed change types can support real developer activities, such as refactorings, impact analysis, and regression testing.
