This paper presents our hybrid architectural model for distributed data mining (DDM), which is tailored to meet the needs of e-businesses in which application service providers sell DDM services to e-commerce users and systems. The hybrid architecture integrates the client-server and the mobile agent technologies. This model focuses on the optimisation and costing issues of DDM, which are particularly relevant in the context of billing users for data mining services.

Cities are responsible for a large proportion of the world’s unsustainable development. Using land more efficiently and increasing development and activity in existing cities - a process of intensification - is potentially one way of achieving more sustainable urban forms. The paper describes some results of national research on urban intensification in the UK and on an Intensification Assessment Method (IAM). It outlines the development of this method into a computer-based decision support system to help assess the more intensive use of brownfield sites. The aim is to indicate the potential for a system, useable by different authorities and decision-makers in cities, that will enable them to make more effective and efficient decisions about sustainable development. The system is a first step towards providing decision support to help make urban areas more sustainable. © 2000 E. & EN Spon.

In this paper, we propose a direct torque control method for the prosthetic hand. In order to estimate the joint torque from EMG signals, an artificial neural network by the feedback error learning schema is used. 2-DOF motions, i.e. hand grasping/opening and arm flexion/extension, are picked up. In the experiments, two measurement conditions of EMG signal are prepared: the forearm from which the EMG signal is measured is free or fixed. Then it is verified that the neural network can learn the relation between the EMG signal and the joint torque under these two measurement conditions.

The availability of powerful microprocessors and high-speed networks as commodity components has enabled high-performance computing on distributed systems (wide-area cluster computing). In this environment, as the resources are usually distributed geographically at various levels (department, enterprise or worldwide), there is a great challenge in integrating, coordinating and presenting them as a single resource to the user, thus forming a computational grid. Another challenge comes from the distributed ownership of resources, with each resource having its own access policy, cost and mechanism. The proposed Nimrod/G grid-enabled resource management and scheduling system builds on our earlier work on Nimrod (D. Abramson et al., 1994, 1995, 1997, 2000) and follows a modular and component-based architecture enabling extensibility, portability, ease of development, and interoperability of independently developed components. It uses the GUSTO (GlobUS TOolkit) services and can be easily extended to operate with any other emerging grid middleware services. It focuses on the management and scheduling of computations over dynamic resources scattered geographically across the Internet at department, enterprise or global levels, with particular emphasis on developing scheduling schemes based on the concept of computational economy for a real testbed, namely the Globus testbed (GUSTO).

This paper focuses on recent developments in software engineering accreditation and criteria, how universities are responding to these issues, and how industry views these developments. An earlier panel at FIE'99 addressed the need for and the relevance of software engineering accreditation guidelines. This paper moves to the next stage of discussion and evolution. Additionally, implications of license of software engineers are addressed.

Database schema integration is significant not only in building multidatabase systems but also in data warehousing. Meta data, which define schemas, are normally involved in the surrounding issues. And while many of these issues have been addressed in the past, unresolved issues remain. The authors present an approach that not only uses metadata but also uses meta-meta information to make schema integration more possible. Our solution requires a meta object facility that serves not only as a repository but also as a more feasible means of managing meta data. We also advocate the use of such a facility as part of an object oriented middleware environment that provides an open interface standard and several useful services in distributed object management.

System Health Management (SHM) is an example of the types of challenging applications facing embedding high-performance computing environments. SHM systems monitor real-time sensors to determine system health and performance. Performance, economics, and safety are all at stake in SHM, and the emphasis on health management technology is motivated by all these considerations. This paper describes a project focusing on condition-based maintenance (CBM) for naval ships. Condition-based maintenance refers to the identification of maintenance needs based on current operational conditions. In this project, system architectures and diagnostic and prognostic algorithms are being developed that can efficiently undertake real-time data analysis from appropriately instrumented machinery aboard naval ships and, based on the analysis, provide feedback to human users regarding the state of the machinery – such as its expected time to failure, the criticality of the equipment for current operation. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2000.

Most prior research on software reviews assumes that all reviewers have the same goals in reviewing software products. However, reviewers representing different organisations, such as those developing and acquiring software in an outsourcing venture, often possess different and often conflicting goals. This may affect the outcomes of joint software reviews. Relatively little research has been done on goal alignment in joint software reviews. This paper explores this important research issue and uses a case study to examine whether or not participants in joint software reviews really possess different goals. The research findings showed that the participants in joint software review meetings did possess different goals, which resulted in a less satisfactory outcome for the review and identified some of the main factors affecting the process loss in joint software reviews. Finally, a theoretical model is proposed with the aim of resolving different/conflicting goals and enhancing the performance of joint software reviews in practice.

Developed a distributed shipboard system to perform diagnostics and prognostics on mechanical equipment (e.g. engines, generators, and chilled water systems) for the Office of Naval Research (ONR). This Condition Based Maintenance (CBM) system (called MPROS for Machinery Prognostics/Diagnostics System) consists of MEMS and conventional sensors on the machinery, local intelligent signal processing devices (called "Data Concentrators"), and a centrally located subsystem (called the PDME for Prognostics, Diagnostics, Monitoring Engine) which is designed so that it can run under shipboard monitoring systems such as ICAS (Integrated Condition Assessment System). MPROS includes and augments periodic vibration analysis by collecting data continuously from vibration and other sensors, including temperature, pressure, current, voltage, and so on. These data streams are integrated as necessary in the Data Concentrators (data fusion). A second level of integration (knowledge fusion) occurs in the PDME. At this level, the conclusions of different diagnostic and prognostic reasoning mechanisms are fused to yield the best possible analysis. In this paper, we discuss recent progress in design and implementation of the software and hardware required to support our system.
