This paper describes how a new testing methodology was employed to evaluate the possibility of reducing the cost of systems testing and improving reliability of the F-16A/B Expanded Fire Control Computer (XFCC) Operational Flight Program (OFP). This new testing methodology was utilized to automatically generate tests which provide all of the stimuli and verification needed to fully drive and test the XFCC OFP in a simulated environment.

CAFE is the name of a network based environment now under development for supporting systematic creation, checking, verification, and maintenance of formal specifications. CAFE has an algebraic specification language called CafeOBJ as its main specification language, and adopts an algebraic specification paradigm as its foundation. CafeOBJ is a successor of the OBJ language, and has important new features for concurrency and behavioral specifications. Concurrency and behavior are specified based on rewriting logic and behavioral (hidden sorted) algebra respectively. These new features make it possible to provide powerful language constructs for formal object oriented specifications. CAFE is designed to be a network based environment. For sharing specification documents systematically over networks, a new document formatting language called Forsdonnet (FORmal Specification Document ON NETwork) is designed by extending HTML. Forsdonnet includes constructs for formal and informal specifications, commands for executing (prototyping) and cheeking/verifying CafeOBJ specifications, etc. Forsdonnet is designed to be based on already established standard network infrastructure components like HTML and Netscape Navigator. The paper gives an overview and design considerations of the CAFE environment, featuring mainly CafeOBJ and Forsdonnet languages.

In this paper a reuse-oriented perspective is taken to designing and implementing configurable distributed applications. An application domain is defined as a family of systems that have some features in common and others that differentiate them. During domain engineering, reusable specifications, architectures and component types are developed, which capture the similarities and variations of the family of systems that compose the application domain. Target systems are generated by tailoring the reusable specification and architecture given the requirements of the target system, and configuring a target system based on the tailored architecture. The paper describes an automated approach for configuring distributed applications from a reusable architecture and library of predefined component types.

When assigning program units (functions) to memory blocks in many embedded microprocessor devices, the actual size of the program units can depend on the assignment. When blocks of memory represent different physical devices/locations, calling program units in the same block requires the minimum amount of memory. When calling units in a different memory block, a longer absolute address must be used. When memory availability is short, as in products like pagers and cellular telephones, careful assignment of program units to memory blocks can free up significant amounts of memory. A set of non-linear (quadratic) expressions can be formulated to describe the memory limitation and program unit constraints. To minimize the memory usage, the number of function calls across memory blocks should be minimized. Also, memory blocks that are nearly full present a problem. If the units in a block grow to a total size larger than the block size, units must be reassigned to different blocks. This typically results in a ripple effect causing an undesirable widespread reassignment of units. Leveling the usage in each block is therefore desired. This paper presents the math programming formulation for the program unit assignment problem and several solution approaches.

The problem of finding a unit in H/sub /spl infin// i.e., an H/sub /spl infin// function the inverse of which is also H/sub /spl infin//, which interpolates to given points in the right-half plane has important applications in a number of feedback stabilization problems, i.e., strong stabilization (stabilization by a stable compensator) and simultaneous stabilization (finding a common fixed compensator which stabilizes a finite set of possible plants). The present paper gives an overview of the interpolation theory and some remarks observed with different mappings used in literature to find a unit in H/sub /spl infin//. A new algorithm is also presented to construct a unit in H/sub /spl infin//.

It is widely accepted that software development technical reviews (SDTRs) are a useful technique for finding defects in software products. The normative SDTR literature assumes that group reviews are better than individual reviews. Recent debates centre around the need for review meetings. This paper presents the findings of a replicated experiment that was conducted to investigate whether group review meetings are needed and why. We found that an interacting group is the preferred choice over the average individual and artificial (nominal) groups. The source of performance advantage of interacting groups is not synergy as was previously thought, but rather in discriminating between true defects and false positives identified by individual reviewers. As a practical implication, nominal groups may be an alternative review design in situations where individuals exhibit a low level of false positives.

The authors address the data access and analysis issues faced by interdisciplinary Earth scientists and graduate students as a prototypical domain community which will be accessing large data sets in Earth system science in the following decades. They present a working prototype developed at George Mason University to serve wide user needs termed Virtual Domain Application Data Center (VDADC). The VDADC prototype provides tools, data products and services tailored to users and can be extended to other domain communities. The VDADC operates in a distributed environment, the World Wide Web, and in close association with federated data centers. Moreover, the information technology implementation is driven by science scenarios and can apply to a variety of domain users, thus reducing network traffic the data centers by implementing intelligent data searching or "content-based browsing" prior to data ordering thus more effectively addressing user needs.

The experiment was designed to demonstrate the data transmission capabilities of a langunge-oriented data system (GDL). In a realistic simulation, an unknown computer-controlled substation was connected to a control centre. By inquiry to the substation, the control centre computer got informed on the stock of objects and the topological connections in this substation, then designed inter active diagrams for its switchyards. Finally, this substation was controlled as for switching and transformer tapping by nit operator. The time required to couple the previously unknown substation to the control system amounted to 100 s.

For an increasing number of data intensive scientific applications, parallel I/O concepts are a major performance issue. Tackling this issue, we provide an outline of an input/output system designed for highly efficient, scalable and conveniently usable parallel I/O on distributed memory systems. The main focus of this paper is the parallel I/O runtime system support provided for software-generated programs produced by parallelizing compilers in the context of High Performance FORTRAN efforts. The paper describes engineering a system for a distributed Austrian Alpine road-pricing environment as well as the structure and organization of the software development. The client/server-based road-pricing system, handling on average 1.2 million vehicle transitions per month, had be to operational within a mere eight months after the start of the project. Current practical and industrial problems of client/server system strategies are discussed. Our main theses derived from the presented case study are: in current medium to large software engineering tasks there is a need for a) technical specialists for industrially identified project stress points (database, network, front-end) with experience in large projects, b) a project and process plan for a (very) short development time frame before production, and c) a dynamic production-oriented process model rather than a traditional linear process model.
