A significant open problem of case based reasoning system is a construction of better knowledge base. We propose a new framework for constructing alternative knowledge base in case based reasoning system based on rough sets and formal concept analysis. Our framework first applies rough set theory for discovering reduced cases required in a case based reasoning system. We then achieve further hierarchical structure of knowledge base using formal concept analysis. The result is the concept lattice knowledge base embedded to our proposed case based reasoning system. A part of case based reasoning system is developed with an example throughout. We also discuss how our proposed framework can be beneficial for a case based reasoning system.

Agents' pro attitudes such as goals, intentions, desires, wishes, and judgements of satisfactoriness play an important role in how agents act rationally. To provide a natural and satisfying formalization of these attitudes is a longstanding problem in the community of agent theory. Most of existing modal logic approaches are based on Kripke structures and have to face the so-called side-effect problem. This paper presents a new modal logic formalizing agents' pro attitudes, based on neighborhood models. There are three distinguishing features of this logic. Firstly, this logic naturally satisfies Bratman's requirements for agents' beliefs and pro attitudes, as well as some interesting properties that have not been discussed before. Secondly, we give a sound and complete axiom system for characterizing all the valid properties of beliefs and pro attitudes. We introduce for the first time the notion of linear neighborhood frame for obtaining the semantic model, and this brings a new member to the family of non-normal modal logics. Finally, we argue that the present logic satisfies an important requirement proposed from the viewpoint of computation, that is, computational grounding, which means that properties in this logic can be given an interpretation in terms of some concrete computational model. It is very important in the field of bioinformatics to apply computer to perform the function annotation for new sequenced bio-sequences. Based on GO database and BLAST program, a novel method for the function annotation of new biological sequences is presented by using the variable-precision rough set theory. The proposed method is applied to the real data in GO database to examine its effectiveness. Numerical results show that the proposed method has better precision, recall-rate and harmonic mean value compared with existing methods.

This paper is part of an ongoing series of projects in which we are investigating "threshold concepts": concepts that, among other things, transforms the way a student looks as the discipline and are often troublesome to learn. The word "threshold" might imply that students cross the threshold in a single "aha" moment, but often they seem to take longer. Meyer and Land introduce the term "liminal space" for the transitional period between beginning to learn a concept and fully mastering it. Based on in-depth interviews with graduating seniors, we found that the liminal space can provide a useful metaphor for the concept learning process. In addition to observing the standard features of liminal spaces, we have identified some that may be specific to computing, specifically those relating to levels of abstraction. Copyright 2007 ACM.

In this paper, we propose a new hybrid case based reasoning system based on rough set theory, formal concept analysis and fuzzy sets. This system applies rough set theory to assure minimally sufficient cases in its case base. It uses formal concept analysis to reveal knowledge of attribute dependencies in terms of concept lattices. Numeric attributes are transformed to be suitable for formal concept analysis using fuzzy sets.

A combination of closed sequential pattern mining and closed itemset pattern mining was proposed to mine closed multidimensional sequential patterns. There are two ways for this combination; (1) mining closed itemset patterns from multidimensional information followed by mining closed sequential patterns from sequences associated with closed itemset patterns, and (2) mining closed sequential patterns from sequences followed by mining closed itemset patterns from multidimensional information associated with closed sequential patterns. In the first way the major cost is mining all sequences associated with closed itemset patterns. A similar problem occurs with the second way, the major cost is mining all multidimensional information associated with closed sequential patterns. Therefore, this paper proposes two new combinations that don't need to mine all sequences in the first combination, and all multidimensional information in the second combination. Both combinations can be effected by exploiting two concepts. In the first combination, any closed sequential patterns associated with a closed itemset patten I can be found from a set of closed sequential patterns associated with a closed itemset pattern I' if I sup I'. In the second combination, any closed itemset patterns associated with a closed sequential pattern s can be found from a set of closed sequential patterns associated with a closed itemset pattern s' if s sup s'.

In this paper, we study the problem of testing intrusion detection systems (IDS) in mobile ad hoc networks (MANET). Testing is achieved by simulating different measurements. We modify the testing measurements of infrastructure-based networks to be compatible with the characteristics of MANET. Moreover, we add some new features and their associated measurements that we believe important for testing new proposed IDS. The modified measurements with the new added ones form a set of measurements that will be used throughout the testing process. To the best of our knowledge, there has not been any work done for testing IDS in MANET. Simulators are the most common tools used for testing the IDS. Therefore, we add some precautions for choosing a simulator and a list of available simulators. The precautions will help researchers to test the measurements efficiently and the list of simulators will guide them to select one according to their needs. Finally, we present some input parameter precautions that help on having more trustworthy testing results.

Utility computing has been anticipated to be the next generation of computing usage. Users have the freedom to easily switch to any commercial computing service to complete jobs whenever the need arises and simply pay only on usage, without any investment costs. A commercial computing service however has certain objectives or goals that it aims to achieve. In this paper, we identify three essential objectives for a commercial computing service: (i) meet SLA, (ii) maintain reliability, and (iii) earn profit. This leads to the problem of whether a resource management policy implemented in the commercial computing service is able to meet the required objectives or not. So, we also develop two evaluation methods that are simple and intuitive: (i) separate and (ii) integrated risk analysis to analyze the effectiveness of resource management policies in achieving the required objectives. Evaluation results based on five policies successfully demonstrate the applicability of separate and integrated risk analysis to assess policies in terms of the required objectives.

In this paper, we present the design of Aneka, a .NET based service-oriented platform for desktop grid computing that provides: (i) a configurable service container hosting pluggable services for discovering, scheduling and balancing various types of workloads and (ii) a flexible and extensible framework/API supporting various programming models including threading, batch processing, MPI and dataflow. Users and developers can easily use different programming models and the services provided by the container to run their applications over desktop Grids managed by Aneka. We present the implementation of both the essential and advanced services within the platform. We evaluate the system with applications using the grid task and dataflow models on top of the infrastructure and conclude with some future directions of the current system.

Effective scheduling is a key concern for the execution of performance driven grid applications. In this paper, we propose a dynamic critical path (DCP) based workflow scheduling algorithm that determines efficient mapping of tasks by calculating the critical path in the workflow task graph at every step. It assigns priority to a task in the critical path which is estimated to complete earlier. Using simulation, we have compared the performance of our proposed approach with other existing heuristic and meta-heuristic based scheduling strategies for different type and size of workflows. Our results demonstrate that DCP based approach can generate better schedule for most of the type of workflows irrespective of their size particularly when resource availability changes frequently.
