This paper presents a new fine-grained temporal Petri net model for distributed multimedia synchronization that can handle fuzzy temporal requirements and facilitate to verify the possibility of satisfying QoS requirements. We present a procedure for constructing the fine-grained model, starting from a set of relative temporal relations among multimedia objects. And we give an approach to infer unknown durations. Finally, we discuss how to model intra-stream and inter-stream synchronizations so as to guarantee the QoS.

This paper generalizes the load scaling techniques proposed in (Kuo and Mok, 1991) for fixed-priority real-time applications. A framework is proposed to adjust the system workload by relating the criticality and flexibility of a process to the resource allocation problem. A load adjustment procedure based on the approximation algorithm (Ni et al., 1997) is proposed to maximize the system profit in an on-line fashion. When the list of allowable configurations is implicitly given by scalable periodic processes, the corresponding load filtering problem is shown to be NP-complete. We also prove the upper bound of the system profit and provide a mechanism to balance the schedulability and the maximum profit of the system.

We present results of providing database support to biomedicine via federation of SDB Cooperation/Integration based upon the KEGG GUI for molecular biology. The federation provides a common link to three molecular biology databases. The added value of the federation is freedom from consulting multiple references to ascertain the full set of enzymatic reactions in a metabolic pathway, and the option of selecting multiple queries to submit to the federated SDBs. Each of the SDBs is extensive, but incomplete. The union of the SDBs, implemented transparently by the federation, is more complete. Each SDB provides a different approach to the options available for data presentation and a different set of Web server tools for data analysis. Thus, an important part of the added value of the federation is the cross-fertilization available in the union of the molecular biological content, the presentation of data, and the tools available for analysis.

This document1 contains definitions of a wide range of concepts specific to and widely used within temporal databases. In addition to providing definitions, the document also includes explanations of concepts as well as discussions of the adopted names. The consensus effort that lead to this glossary was initiated in Early 1992. Earlier versions appeared in SIGMOD Record in September 1992 and March 1994. The present glossary subsumes all the previous documents. The glossary meets the need for creating a higher degree of consensus on the definition and naming of temporal database concepts. Two sets of criteria are included. First, all included concepts were required to satisfy four relevance criteria, and, second, the naming of the concepts was resolved using a set of evaluation criteria. The concepts are grouped into three categories: concepts of general database interest, of temporal database interest, and of specialized interest. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 1998.

A distributed computing system consists of heterogeneous computing devices, communication networks, operating system services, and applications. As organisations move toward distributed computing environments, there will be a corresponding growth in distributed applications central to the enterprise. The design, development, and management of distributed applications presents many difficult challenges. As these systems grow to hundreds or even thousands of devices and similar or greater magnitude of software components, it will become increasingly difficult to manage them without appropriate support tools and frameworks. Further, the design and deployment of additional applications and services will be, at best, ad hoc without modelling tools and timely data on which to base design and configuration decisions. This paper presents a framework for management of distributed applications and systems. The framework is based on a set of common management services that support management activities. The services include monitoring, control, configuration, and data repository services. A prototype system built on the framework is described that implements and integrates management applications providing visualisation, fault location, performance monitoring and modelling, and configuration management. The prototype also demonstrates how various management services can be implemented.

In packet-switched networks, queueing of packets at the switches can result when multiple connections share the same physical link. To accommodate a large number of connections, a switch can employ link-scheduling algorithms to prioritize the transmission of the queued packets. Due to the high-speed links and small packet sizes, a hardware solution is needed for the priority queue in order to make the link schedulers effective. But for good performance, the switch should also support a large number of priority levels (P) and be able to buffer a large number of packets (N). So a hardware priority queue design must be both fast and scalable (with respect to N and P) in order to be implemented effectively. In this paper we first compare four existing hardware priority queue architectures, and identify scalability limitations on implementing these existing architectures for large N and P. Based on our findings, we propose two new priority queue architectures, and evaluate them using simulation results from Verilog HDL and Epoch implementations.

He currently the program manager for the Sustainable Hardware and Affordable Readiness Practice Program (SHARP). is a Navy-wide logistics research and development prgram aimed at the successful transiton of proved technologies inot the fleet. SHARP focuses on reducing acquisition performance capability reliability maintainability and readiness of these systems. Mr. Grubb has served as a department director for the past eleven years. His most recent assignment was as director of the Tactical Computer Resources and Test Equipment Department. This organization provided acquisition and in-service engineering support of the Navy's tectical embedded computers priphirals displays and mass memory storage devices. The organization also provided a complete range of product engineering and metrology engineerig services for SSP NevSeaSysCom and the Trident Program. Prior to this appointment Mr. Grubb was deptuy director psysical security programs department and site responsible for program management and system integration of ashore integrated security systems. Mr. Grubb holds a B.S. degree in industrial engineering from Iowa State Universtiy an M.S. degree in industrial engineering from Purdue University and has copleted the course work (Dec.'96 for a master's degree in public and environment affairs at Indiana University-Purdue Univeristy Indianapolis. Dr. Alfred Skolnick operates System Science Consultants (SSC) specilizing in strategic planning technical program definiton technology assessment and engineering analyses on selected matters of national interest. He has taught physics mathematics and management sciences at University of Virginia and Marymount University and is currently adjunct professor of mathematics at Northern Virginia Community College. In an era of fiscal austerity, downsizing and unforgiving pressure upon human and economic capital, it is an Augean task to identify resources for fresh and creative work. The realities of the day and the practical demands of more immediate fleet needs can often dictate higher priorities. Yet, the Navy must avoid eating its seed corn. Exercising both technical insight and management foresight, the fleet, the R&D community, the Office of the Chief of Naval Operations (OpNav) and the product engineering expertise of the Naval Surface Warfare Center (NSWC) are joined and underway with integrated efforts to marry new, fully demonstrated technologies and operational urgencies. Defense funding today cannot sponsor all work that can be mission-justified over the long term because budgets are insufficient to support product maturation within the classical development cycle. However, by rigorous technical filtering and astute engineering of both marketplace capabilities and currently available components, it is possible in a few select cases to compress and, in effect, integrate advanced development (6.3), engineering development (6.4), weapon procurement (WPN), ship construction (SCN), operation and maintenance (O&M,N) budgetary categories when fleet criticalities and technology opportunities can happily meet. In short, 6.3 funds can be applied directly to ''ripe gateways'' so modern technology is inserted into existing troubled or aging systems, sidestepping the lengthy, traditional development cycle and accelerating practical payoffs to recurrent fleet problems. To produce such constructive results has required a remarkable convergence of sponsor prescience and engineering workforce excellence. The paper describes, extensively, the philosophy of approach, transition strategy, polling of fleet needs, technology assessment, and management team requirements.
