Regulatory compliance management is a critical and challenging task, especially in the context of Business Process Management. It requires a comprehensive framework for dealing with compliance requirements: elicitation, modeling, static and dynamic checking and reporting. We previously defined CoReL, a domain specific language for the domain of compliance decision-making. This paper shows how CoReL can be used to model compliance requirements using an illustrative example. In particular, we show how CoReL's agnosticism of logical formalisms and coverage of enterprise business aspects leverages the task of compliance modeling to the business user level.

Regulatory compliance management is now widely recognized as one of the main challenges still to be efficiently dealt with in information systems. In the discipline of business process management in particular, compliance is considered as an important driver of the efficiency, reliability and market value of companies. It consists of ensuring that enterprise systems behave according to some guidance provided in the form of regulations. This paper gives a definition of the research problem of regulatory compliance. We show why we expect a formal policy-based and model-driven approach to provide significant advantages in allowing enterprises to flexibly manage decision-making related to regulatory compliance. For this purpose, we contribute CoReL, a domain-specific modeling language for representing compliance requirements that has a graphical concrete syntax. Informal semantics of CoReL are introduced and its use is illustrated on an example. CoReL allows to leverage business process compliance modeling and checking, enhancing it with regard to, among other dimensions, user-friendliness, genericity, and traceability.

The functionality of a distributed system can be significantly enhanced by exploring non-traditional approaches that leverage on inherent aspects of distributed systems in space. Till now, the benefit of distributed systems in space has been limited to enhancing coverage, multipoint sensing, creating virtual baselines (e.g. interferometry) or to enhance redundancy. The list of benefits can be further expanded by understanding the nature of distributed systems and by productively incorporating it into mission and spacecraft design. For example, prior knowledge of the spatial evolution of such systems can lead to innovative communication architectures for these distributed systems. In this paper, different communication scenarios are investigated that can enhance the communication link between the distributed system and ground. The increasing trend towards highly miniaturized spacecraft (nano to femto-satellites] and proposals to launch hundreds or even thousands of them in massively distributed space missions have expanded the interest in distributed systems in space. It is important to understand how and which, functionalities and systems, scale with size and number. Scalable systems are defined and addressed at a basic level. In this paper we focus on the communication capability and identify methods to enhance the communication link between the space segment and earth with a network of simplistic femto-satellites. As an example, the concept of forming a dynamic phased array in space with the elements of a distributed space system in low-earth orbit is investigated. At the ground receiver, the signals from different satellites forming the array should not differ in phase by more than one-third the transmission wavelength. Realizing such a phased array places strict accuracy requirements on time synchronization and knowledge of relative separation between the satellites with respect to the ground receiver. An aggregate signature scheme allows a public algorithm to aggregate n signatures of n distinct messages from n signers into a single signature. By validating the single resulting signature, one can be convinced that the messages have been endorsed by all the signers. Certificateless aggregate signatures allow the signers to authenticate messages without suffering from the complex certificate management in the traditional public key cryptography or the key escrow problem in identitybased cryptography. In this paper, we present a new efficient certificateless aggregate signature scheme. Compared with up-todate certificateless aggregate signatures, our scheme is equipped with a number of attracting features: (1) it is shown to be secure under the standard computational Diffie-Hellman assumption in the random oracle model;(2) the security is proven in the strongest security model so far;(3) the signers do not need to be synchronized;and (4) its performance is comparable to the most efficient up-to-date schemes. These features are desirable in a mobile networking and computing environment where the storage/computation capacity of the end devices are limited, and due to the wireless connection and distributed feature, the computing devices are easy to be attacked and hard to be synchronized. © 2011 IEEE.

Cloud computing paradigm allows on-demand access to computing and storages services over the Internet. To solve the complexity of application deployment in Cloud infrastructure, virtual appliances, pre-configured, ready-to-run applications are emerging as a breakthrough technology. However, an automated approach for deploying network of appliances is required to guarantee minimum deployment cost, low latency, and high reliability. In this paper, we propose and compare two different deployment approaches: Forward-checking-based backtracking (FCBB) and genetic-based. They take into account Quality of Service (QoS) criteria such as reliability, data communication cost, and latency between multiple Clouds to choose the most appropriate combination of virtual machines and appliances. We evaluate our approach using a real case study and different request types. Experimental results show both algorithms reach near optimal solution. Further, we investigate effects of factors such as latency requirements, and data communication between appliances on the performance of the algorithms and placement of appliances across multiple Clouds.

The time-domain receiving properties of a multi-mode cylindrical waveguide antenna are investigated. The configurational properties of the antenna are characterized by the time-domain scattering matrix that interrelates the time-domain amplitudes of the axial modal constituents traveling towards and away from the radiating aperture of the waveguide, which is taken as their reference plane. The excitation of the system by an incident field is expressed as an excitation integral over the aperture that results from the application of the pertaining time-domain Lorentz reciprocity relation of the time-convolution type. Numerical results illustrate the complexity of the changes in pulse shape (with the associated loss of signal integrity) that occur upon the coupling of the incident wave to the different modal constituents.

With the growth of Cloud Computing, more and more companies are offering different cloud services. From the customer's point of view, it is always difficult to decide whose services they should use, based on users' requirements. Currently there is no software framework which can automatically index cloud providers based on their needs. In this work, we propose a framework and a mechanism, which measure the quality and prioritize Cloud services. Such framework can make significant impact and will create healthy competition among Cloud providers to satisfy their Service Level Agreement (SLA) and improve their Quality of Services (QoS).

Background: The accumulation of deleterious mutations of a population directly contributes to the fate as to how long the population would exist. Muller's ratchet provides a quantitative framework to study the effect of accumulation. Adaptive landscape as a powerful concept in system biology provides a handle to describe complex and rare biological events. In this article we study the evolutionary process of a population exposed to Muller's ratchet from the new viewpoint of adaptive landscape which allows us estimate the single click of the ratchet starting with an intuitive understanding. Methods: We describe how Wright-Fisher process maps to Muller's ratchet. We analytically construct adaptive landscape from general diffusion equation. It shows that the construction is dynamical and the adaptive landscape is independent of the existence and normalization of the stationary distribution. We generalize the application of diffusion model from adaptive landscape viewpoint. Results: We develop a novel method to describe the dynamical behavior of the population exposed to Muller's ratchet, and analytically derive the decaying time of the fittest class of populations as a mean first passage time. Most importantly, we describe the absorption phenomenon by adaptive landscape, where the stationary distribution is non-normalizable. These results suggest the method may be used to understand the mechanism of populations evolution and describe the biological processes quantitatively. © 2011 IEEE.

Hazard and Operability (HAZOP) Analysis and Failure Mode and Effect Analysis (FMEA) are among the most widely used safety analysis procedures in the development of safety-critical and embedded systems. These analyses are generally perceived as complex and time-consuming, hindering an effective reuse of previous results or experiences. In this paper we present a conceptual semantic case-based framework for safety analysis, which facilitates the reuse of previous HAZOP and FMEA experiences in order to reduce the time and effort associated with these analyses. We present the core technologies of the conceptual framework and evaluated a prototype of the framework, KROSA, in an experiment with domain experts at ABB Norway. Initial results confirm the viability of the conceptual framework for industrial application.

Energy consumption is becoming a growing concern in data centers. Many energy-conservation techniques have been proposed to address this problem. However, an integrated method is still needed to evaluate energy efficiency of storage systems and various power conservation techniques. Extensive measurements of different workloads on storage systems are often very time-consuming and require expensive equipments. We have analyzed changing characteristics such as power and performance of stand-alone disks and RAID arrays, and then defined MIND as a black box power model for RAID arrays. MIND is devised to quantitatively measure the power consumption of redundant disk arrays running different workloads in a variety of execution modes. In MIND, we define five modes (idle, standby, and several types of access) and four actions, to precisely characterize power states and changes of RAID arrays. In addition, we develop corresponding metrics for each mode and action, and then integrate the model and a measurement algorithm into a popular trace tool - blktrace. With these features, we are able to run different IO traces on large-scale storage systems with power conservation techniques. Accurate energy consumption and performance statistics are then collected to evaluate energy efficiency of storage system designs and power conservation techniques. Our experiments running both synthetic and real-world workloads on enterprise RAID arrays show that MIND can estimate power consumptions of disk arrays with an error rate less than 2%.
