From sensing to energy savings: A comprehensive survey on integrating emerging technologies for energy efficiency in WBANs

Energy is essential for human existence, and its high consumption is a growing concern in today's technology-driven society. Global initiatives aim to reduce energy consumption and pollution by developing and deploying energy-efficient sensing technologies for long-term monitoring, control, automation, security, and interactions. Wireless Body Area Networks (WBANs) benefit a lot from the continuous monitoring capabilities of these sensing devices, which include medical sensors worn on or implanted in the human body for healthcare monitoring. Despite significant advancements, achieving energy efficiency in WBANs remains a significant challenge. A deep understanding of the WBAN architecture is essential to identify the causes of its energy inefficiency and develop novel energy-efficient solutions. We investigate energy efficiency issues specific to WBANs. We discuss the transformative impact that artificial intelligence and Machine Learning (ML) can have on achieving the energy efficiency of WBANs. Additionally, we explore the potential of emerging technologies such as quantum computing, nano-technology, biocompatible energy harvesting, and Simultaneous Wireless Information and Power Transfer (SWIPT) in enabling energy efficiency in WBANs. We focus on WBANs' architecture, hardware, and software components to identify key factors responsible for energy consumption in the WBAN environment. Based on our comprehensive review, we introduce an innovative, energy-efficient three-tier architecture for WBANs that employs ML and edge computing to overcome the limitations inherent in existing energy-efficient solutions. Finally, we summarize the lessons learned and highlight future research directions that will enable the development of energy-efficient solutions for WBANs.

With the acceleration of the Internet in Web 2.0, Cloud computing is a new paradigm to offer dynamic, reliable and elastic computing services. Efficient scheduling of resources or optimal allocation of requests is one of the prominent issues in emerging Cloud computing. Considering the growing complexity of Cloud computing, future Cloud systems will require more effective resource management methods. In some complex scenarios with difficulties in directly evaluating the performance of scheduling solutions, classic algorithms (such as heuristics and meta-heuristics) will fail to obtain an effective scheme. Deep reinforcement learning (DRL) is a novel method to solve scheduling problems. Due to the combination of deep learning (DL) and reinforcement learning (RL), DRL has achieved considerable performance in current studies. To focus on this direction and analyze the application prospect of DRL in Cloud scheduling, we provide a comprehensive review for DRL-based methods in resource scheduling of Cloud computing. Through the theoretical formulation of scheduling and analysis of RL frameworks, we discuss the advantages of DRL-based methods in Cloud scheduling. Industrial automation systems (IAS) need to be highly dependable;they should not merely function as expected but also do so in a reliable, safe, and secure manner. Formal methods are mathematical techniques that can greatly aid in developing dependable systems and can be used across all phases of the system development life cycle (SDLC), including requirements engineering, system design and implementation, verification and validation (testing), maintenance, and even documentation. This state-of-the-art survey reports existing formal approaches for creating more dependable IAS, focusing on static formal methods that are used before a system is completely implemented. We categorize surveyed works based on the phases of the SDLC, allowing us to identify research gaps and promising future directions for each phase. Copyright © 2021, The Authors. BACKGROUND:Skin cancer is one of the highly occurring diseases in human life. Early detection and treatment are the prime and necessary points to reduce the malignancy of infections. Deep learning techniques are supplementary tools to assist clinical experts in detecting and localizing skin lesions. Vision transformers (ViT) based on image segmentation classification using multiple classes provide fairly accurate detection and are gaining more popularity due to legitimate multiclass prediction capabilities. MATERIALS AND METHODS:In this research, we propose a new ViT Gradient-Weighted Class Activation Mapping (GradCAM) based architecture named ViT-GradCAM for detecting and classifying skin lesions by spreading ratio on the lesion's surface area. The proposed system is trained and validated using a HAM 10000 dataset by studying seven skin lesions. The database comprises 10 015 dermatoscopic images of varied sizes. The data preprocessing and data augmentation techniques are applied to overcome the class imbalance issues and improve the model's performance. RESULT:The proposed algorithm is based on ViT models that classify the dermatoscopic images into seven classes with an accuracy of 97.28%, precision of 98.51, recall of 95.2%, and an F1 score of 94.6, respectively. The proposed ViT-GradCAM obtains better and more accurate detection and classification than other state-of-the-art deep learning-based skin lesion detection models. The architecture of ViT-GradCAM is extensively visualized to highlight the actual pixels in essential regions associated with skin-specific pathologies. CONCLUSION:This research proposes an alternate solution to overcome the challenges of detecting and classifying skin lesions using ViTs and GradCAM, which play a significant role in detecting and classifying skin lesions accurately rather than relying solely on deep learning models.

In space applications, hierarchical state machines (HSMs) are often used for writing simulation and control software, including that of the Curiosity rover. At the Jet Propulsion Lab (JPL), multiple programming languages have been developed specifically for writing HSM-based software, and these have been used in practice. However, we observe that the existing languages developed have significant issues with one or more of usability, performance, and safety, making them problematic for HSM-based development. To address these concerns, we are taking lessons learned from these languages and developing a new programming language named Proteus. Proteus builds HSM support directly into the language, and permits complex HSMs to be defined which communicate with each other. Proteus is designed with a look and feel similar to C/C++, making it usable and overall approachable for use by JPL systems engineers. Proteus itself compiles to C++, allowing it to fit easily into existing development toolchains, and making it amenable to embedded real-time systems. To ensure that Proteus will be of use to its target audience, it is being developed iteratively through a series of prototypes which are regularly evaluated by key stakeholders at JPL, allowing us to refine its design if we go off course. While Proteus is still very young in its development, we demonstrate its basic viability on an example utilizing multiple independent HSMs communicating with each other, and relevant execution traces. In the future, we plan to apply Proteus to larger HSMs taken from real space applications, and many additional relevant features are planned. © 2020 The MITRE Corporation. All Rights Reserved.

A vehicular network underpinned by the 3-tier vehicle-edge-cloud infrastructure enables an efficient and safer travel experience. The compute-intensive vehicular applications are often offloaded to the edge and/or cloud servers to enhance the applications’ Quality of Services (QoS). The underlying edge-cloud servers consume a high among of energy. Consequently, it becomes crucial to optimizing energy consumption in the offloading process. Current energy-efficient offloading strategies in 2-tier vehicle-edge infrastructure, do not account for cloud computing energy consumption. In this paper, we address this void by proposing a machine learning-based energy-aware offloading algorithm, which optimizes the energy of the edge-cloud computing platform. The offloading strategy is enabled by the Support Vector Machine (SVM) regression model machine learning algorithm used for the edge-cloud power prediction. The experimental results show that the proposed algorithm is a promising approach in energy savings.

This paper reports on the NTIRE 2024 Quality Assessment of AI-Generated Content Challenge, which will be held in conjunction with the New Trends in Image Restoration and Enhancement Workshop (NTIRE) at CVPR 2024. This challenge is to address a major challenge in the field of image and video processing, namely, Image Quality Assessment (IQA) and Video Quality Assessment (VQA) for AI-Generated Content (AIGC). The challenge is divided into the image track and the video track. The image track uses the AIGIQA-20K, which contains 20,000 AI-Generated Images (AIGIs) generated by 15 popular generative models. The image track has a total of 318 registered participants. A total of 1,646 submissions are received in the development phase, and 221 submissions are received in the test phase. Finally, 16 participating teams submitted their models and fact sheets. The video track uses the T2VQA-DB, which contains 10,000 AI-Generated Videos (AIGVs) generated by 9 popular Text-to-Video (T2V) models. A total of 196 participants have registered in the video track. A total of 991 submissions are received in the development phase, and 185 submissions are received in the test phase. Finally, 12 participating teams submitted their models and fact sheets. Some methods have achieved better results than baseline methods, and the winning methods in both tracks have demonstrated superior prediction performance on AIGC. Copyright © 2024, The Authors. With network slicing technology, 5G changes the classical mobile network business model from a network-operator-oriented business to a more open system with multiple stakeholders. In this context, a network slice broker plays the role of agency between network resource providers and vertical service providers, to lease and provide on-demand network slice services. In practice, a single network slice broker normally owns limited types of network slices. And a collaboration infrastructure could be built up to enable network slice sharing among multiple network slice brokers, so as to improve user experience, and enhance the resource utilization rate. However, a major challenge with such an infrastructure is how to support fair and secure slice trading process among multiple un-trusted network slice providers. Blockchain technology, on the other side, brings in high opportunities to implement a fair and secure trading system without a trusted third-party. In view of this observation, this paper proposes a design of blockchain-enabled collaboration infrastructure for network slice brokers, where a group of registered brokers can trade their network slices in a fair and secure manner. To enhance the accountability of slice trading records, transactions are verified and sorted by each broker node, which are further packed into blocks and appended to a shared ledger maintained by each member in the collaboration network. More specifically, we design a Proof-of-Majority (PoM) consensus protocol to sort slice trading transactions before packing transaction blocks of the shared ledger. Furthermore, an optimization for the basic PoM protocol is discussed, with dependency resolving strategy to improve system performance. Experiments are conducted to verify the feasibility of our proposal. © 2020 ACM.

Recently, Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) present a promising advanced technology that can enhance people life quality and smartness of cities dramatically and increase overall economic efficiency. UAVs have attained a significant interest in supporting many applications such as surveillance, agriculture, communication, transportation, pollution monitoring, disaster management, public safety, healthcare, and environmental preservation. Industry 4.0 applications are conceived of intelligent things that can automatically and collaboratively improve beyond 5G (B5G). Therefore, the Internet of Things (IoT) is required to ensure collaboration between the vast multitude of things efficiently anywhere in real-world applications that are monitored in real-time. However, many IoT devices consume a significant amount of energy when transmitting the collected data from surrounding environments. Due to a drone's capability to fly closer to IoT, UAV technology plays a vital role in greening IoT by transmitting collected data to achieve a sustainable, reliable, eco-friendly Industry 4.0. This survey presents an overview of the techniques and strategies proposed recently to achieve green IoT using UAVs infrastructure for a reliable and sustainable smart world. This survey is different from other attempts in terms of concept, focus, and discussion. Context: Contemporary software development is typically conducted in dynamic, resource-scarce environments that are prone to the accumulation of technical debt. While this general phenomenon is acknowledged, what remains unknown is how technical debt specifically manifests in and affects software processes, and how the software development techniques employed accommodate or mitigate the presence of this debt. Objectives: We sought to draw on practitioner insights and experiences in order to classify the effects of agile method use on technical debt management, given the popularity and perceived success of agile methods. We explore the breadth of practitioners' knowledge about technical debt;how technical debt is manifested across the software process;and the perceived effects of common agile software development practices and processes on technical debt. In doing so, we address a research gap in technical debt knowledge and provide novel and actionable managerial recommendations. Method: We designed, tested and executed a multi-national survey questionnaire to address our objectives, receiving 184 responses from practitioners in Brazil, Finland, and New Zealand. Results: Our findings indicate that: 1) Practitioners are aware of technical debt, although, there was under utilization of the concept, 2) Technical debt commonly resides in legacy systems, however, concrete instances of technical debt are hard to conceptualize which makes it problematic to manage, 3) Queried agile practices and processes help to reduce technical debt;in particular, techniques that verify and maintain the structure and clarity of implemented artifacts (e.g., Coding standards and Refactoring) positively affect technical debt management. Conclusions: The fact that technical debt instances tend to have characteristics in common means that a systematic approach to its management is feasible.
