As interest in adopting Cloud computing for various applications is rapidly growing, it is important to understand how these applications and systems will perform when deployed on Clouds. Due to the scale and complexity of shared resources, it is often hard to analyze the performance of new scheduling and provisioning algorithms on actual Cloud test beds. Therefore, simulation tools are becoming more and more important in the evaluation of the Cloud computing model. Simulation tools allow researchers to rapidly evaluate the efficiency, performance and reliability of their new algorithms on a large heterogeneous Cloud infrastructure. However, current solutions lack either advanced application models such as message passing applications and workflows or scalable network model of data center. To fill this gap, we have extended a popular Cloud simulator (CloudSim) with a scalable network and generalized application model, which allows more accurate evaluation of scheduling and resource provisioning policies to optimize the performance of a Cloud infrastructure.

Cloud Federation is a recent paradigm that helps Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) providers to overcome resource limitation during spikes in demand for Virtual Machines (VMs) by outsourcing requests to other federation members. IaaS providers also have the option of terminating spot VMs, i.e, cheaper VMs that can be canceled to free resources for more profitable VM requests. By both approaches, providers can expect to reject less profitable requests. For IaaS providers, pricing and profit are two important factors, in addition to maintaining a high Quality of Service (QoS) and utilization of their resources to remain in the business. For this, a clear understanding of the usage pattern, types of requests, and infrastructure costs are necessary while making decisions to terminate spot VMs, outsourcing or contributing to the federation. In this paper, we propose policies that help in the decision-making process to increase resources utilization and profit. Simulation results indicate that the proposed policies enhance the profit, utilization, and QoS (smaller number of rejected VM requests) in a Cloud federation environment.

Metric is extremely important for software development. It is a tool for measuring software in both quantitative and qualitative aspects. In addition, metric can be used for determining an achievement of the goals. There are some problems that bring difficulties to the design and development of software metrics. Among them, a number of software perspectives that metrics must handle and the way to apply metrics results to support business outcomes are considered important. This paper proposes OPI as a model for implementing software metrics based on business outcomes. There are three steps in this model, defining outcomes (O), defining perspectives (P), and defining indicators (I). A case study has been developed to assess the use of the proposed model. Forty undergraduate students, who have basic knowledge in software metric, use the model to develop metrics from the case study. The preliminary evaluation is based on usability aspect. The result has show that 85 percents of the students think that the model is easy to understand, where 8 and 7 percents say that it is moderate and hard respectively.

Cloud computing paradigm allows on-demand access to computing and storages services over the Internet. To solve the complexity of application deployment in Cloud infrastructure, virtual appliances, pre-configured, ready-to-run applications are emerging as a breakthrough technology. However, an automated approach for deploying network of appliances is required to guarantee minimum deployment cost, low latency, and high reliability. In this paper, we propose and compare two different deployment approaches: Forward-checking-based backtracking (FCBB) and genetic-based. They take into account Quality of Service (QoS) criteria such as reliability, data communication cost, and latency between multiple Clouds to choose the most appropriate combination of virtual machines and appliances. We evaluate our approach using a real case study and different request types. Experimental results show both algorithms reach near optimal solution. Further, we investigate effects of factors such as latency requirements, and data communication between appliances on the performance of the algorithms and placement of appliances across multiple Clouds.

The share measure has been proposed as an important measure for mining association rules. The value of share itemsets provides useful information such as total profits and total customer purchased quantities associated with itemsets in database. The share-frequent itemsets mining problems become a very important research issue in data mining. Existing share-frequent itemsets mining algorithms are based on static database so knowledge must be rebuilded when the minimum share threshold is changed or database is modified either appended or updated. This paper proposes a novel BitTable knowledge for incremental and interactive share-frequent itemsets mining in multiple minimum share thresholds without rebuilding BitTable knowledge. It is effective for incremental and interactive mining to take advantage of the previous BitTable knowledge and the previous mining results.

In this study, we introduces a classification approach using Multi-Layer Perceptron (MLP)with Back-Propagation learning algorithm and a feature selection algorithm along with biomedical test values to diagnose heart disease. Clinical diagnosis is done mostly by doctor's expertise and experience. But still cases are reported of wrong diagnosis and treatment. Patients are asked to take number of tests for diagnosis. In many cases, not all the tests contribute towards effective diagnosis of a disease. Our work is to classify the presence of heart disease with reduced number of attributes. Original, 13 attributes are involved in classify the heart disease. We use Information Gain to determine the attributes which reduces the number of attributes which is need to be taken from patients. The Artificial neural networks is used to classify the diagnosis of patients. Thirteen attributes are reduced to 8 attributes. The accuracy differs between 13 features and 8 features in training data set is 1.1% and in the validation data set is 0.82%.

With the growth of Cloud Computing, more and more companies are offering different cloud services. From the customer's point of view, it is always difficult to decide whose services they should use, based on users' requirements. Currently there is no software framework which can automatically index cloud providers based on their needs. In this work, we propose a framework and a mechanism, which measure the quality and prioritize Cloud services. Such framework can make significant impact and will create healthy competition among Cloud providers to satisfy their Service Level Agreement (SLA) and improve their Quality of Services (QoS).

Hazard and Operability (HAZOP) Analysis and Failure Mode and Effect Analysis (FMEA) are among the most widely used safety analysis procedures in the development of safety-critical and embedded systems. These analyses are generally perceived as complex and time-consuming, hindering an effective reuse of previous results or experiences. In this paper we present a conceptual semantic case-based framework for safety analysis, which facilitates the reuse of previous HAZOP and FMEA experiences in order to reduce the time and effort associated with these analyses. We present the core technologies of the conceptual framework and evaluated a prototype of the framework, KROSA, in an experiment with domain experts at ABB Norway. Initial results confirm the viability of the conceptual framework for industrial application.

Energy consumption is becoming a growing concern in data centers. Many energy-conservation techniques have been proposed to address this problem. However, an integrated method is still needed to evaluate energy efficiency of storage systems and various power conservation techniques. Extensive measurements of different workloads on storage systems are often very time-consuming and require expensive equipments. We have analyzed changing characteristics such as power and performance of stand-alone disks and RAID arrays, and then defined MIND as a black box power model for RAID arrays. MIND is devised to quantitatively measure the power consumption of redundant disk arrays running different workloads in a variety of execution modes. In MIND, we define five modes (idle, standby, and several types of access) and four actions, to precisely characterize power states and changes of RAID arrays. In addition, we develop corresponding metrics for each mode and action, and then integrate the model and a measurement algorithm into a popular trace tool - blktrace. With these features, we are able to run different IO traces on large-scale storage systems with power conservation techniques. Accurate energy consumption and performance statistics are then collected to evaluate energy efficiency of storage system designs and power conservation techniques. Our experiments running both synthetic and real-world workloads on enterprise RAID arrays show that MIND can estimate power consumptions of disk arrays with an error rate less than 2%.

Mobility model is a crucial feature to differentiate ad hoc networks from other networks. The evaluation of dynamic network properties caused by mobility model is the basic problem for research on protocol simulation and related technologies, such as topology control and network performance measurement, in ad hoc networks. In this paper, a model-based description of ad hoc networks is improved to avoid the drawbacks in describing the corresponding space-time dynamic properties. Then a universal evaluation method with measureable space-time dynamic properties is presented. The dynamic properties of several mobility models are studied by constructing the space distribution of the nodes and designing the models for analyzing the topological space-time dynamic properties. Furthermore, a novel mobility model based on circular curve movement is proposed to improve the flexibility and the capability to describe realistic scenarios with curve movement. Simulation with NS2 shows the presented method can effectively evaluate the characteristics of the existing mobility models. The numerical results also show that the proposed mobility model has good dynamic properties in comparison with the existing mobility models. ©2011 ISCAS.
