The user-level brokers in grids consider individual application QoS requirements and minimize their cost without considering demands from other users. This results in contention for resources and sub-optimal schedules. Meta-scheduling in grids aims to address this scheduling problem, which is NP hard due to its combinatorial nature. Thus, many heuristic-based solutions using genetic algorithm (GA) have been proposed, apart from traditional algorithms such as greedy and FCFS. We propose a Linear Programming/Integer Programming model (LP/IP) for scheduling these applications to multiple resources. We also propose a novel algorithm LPGA (linear programming driven genetic algorithm) which combines the capabilities of LP and GA. The aim of this algorithm is to obtain the best meta-schedule for utility grids which minimize combined cost of all users in a coordinated manner. Simulation results show that our proposed integrated algorithm offers the best schedule having the minimum processing cost with negligible time overheard.

Service level agreements (SLAs) between grid users and providers have been proposed as mechanisms for ensuring that the users' quality of service (QoS) requirements are met, and that the provider is able to realise utility from its infrastructure. This paper presents a bilateral protocol for SLA negotiation using the alternate offers mechanism wherein a party is able to respond to an offer by modifying some of its terms to generate a counter offer. We apply this protocol to the negotiation between a resource broker and a provider for advance reservation of compute nodes, and implement and evaluate it on a real grid system.

Summary form only given. Grids and peer-to-peer (P2P) networks have emerged as popular platforms for the next generation parallel and distributed computing. In these environments, resources are geographically distributed, managed and owned by various organizations with different policies, and interconnected by wide-area networks or the Internet. This introduces a number of resource management and application scheduling challenges in the domain of security, resource and policy heterogeneity, fault tolerance, and dynamic resource conditions. In these dynamic distributed computing environments, it is hard and challenging to carry out resource management design studies in a repeatable and controlled manner as resources and users are autonomous and distributed across multiple organizations with their own policies. Therefore, simulations have emerged as the most feasible technique for analyzing policies for resource allocation. This paper presents emerging trends in distributed computing and their promises for revolutionizing the computing field, and identifies distinct characteristics and challenges in building them. We motivate opportunities for modeling and simulation communities and present our discrete-event grid simulation toolkit, called GridSim, used by researchers world-wide for investigating the design of utility-oriented computing systems such as data centers and grids. We present various case studies on the use of GridSim in modeling and simulation of business grids, parallel applications scheduling, workflow scheduling, and service pricing and revenue management.

The Gridbus workflow management system (GWMS) is designed to execute scientific applications, expressed in the form of workflows, onto Grid and Cloud resources. With the help of this system, we demonstrate a computational and data-intensive Image Registration (IR) workflow for functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) applications on Clouds and global Grids. We also present a demonstration of the Aneka System. Aneka is a .NET based Cloud software platform that provides: (i) a configurable service container hosting pluggable services for discovering, scheduling various types of workloads and (ii) a flexible and extensible framework supporting various programming models. We use distributed Grid and Cloud resources from Australia, Austria, France, Japan, and USA for the executions of image registration workflow, and resources from Melbourne University for executing map-reduce applications in Aneka cloud environment.

The MapReduce programming model allows users to easily develop distributed applications in data centers. However, many applications cannot be exactly expressed with MapReduce due to their specific characteristics. For instance, genetic algorithms (GAs) naturally fit into an iterative style. That does not follow the two phase pattern of MapReduce. This paper presents an extension to the MapReduce model featuring a hierarchical reduction phase. This model is called MRPGA (MapReduce for parallel GAs), which can automatically parallelize GAs. We describe the design and implementation of the extended MapReduce model on a .NET-based enterprise grid system in detail. The evaluation of this model with its runtime system is presented using example applications.

We model the Sum and Product Riddle inpublic announcement logic, which is interpreted on an epistemic Kripke model. The model is symbolically represented as a finite state program with n agents. A model checking method to the riddle is developed by using the BDD-based symbolic model checking algorithm for logic of knowledge we developed in [7]. The method is implemented by extending the model checker MCTK [7] and then the solution of the riddle is verified successfully. © 2008 IEEE.

It is becoming increasingly important to be able to adapt an application's behavior at run time in response to changing requirements and environmental conditions. Adaptive programs are typically difficult to specify, design, and verify. A variety of conditions may trigger an adaptation, each of which may involve different types of adaptation mechanisms. In many cases, adaptive systems are concurrent, thus further exacerbating the complexity. Furthermore, it is important that adaptations do not put the system into an inconsistent state during or after adaptation. This paper presents an iterative approach to modeling and analyzing UML behavioral design models of adaptive systems, where the UML state diagrams are automatically translated into Promela code for analysis with the Spin model checker. The adaptive models are analyzed for adherence to both system invariants and properties that should hold during adaptation. We demonstrate this approach on applications for the mobile computing domain where we verify the design models against formally-specified properties.

Framework-based software development has been proven a useful technique to develop an application. However, the development of a large application framework itself is considered complex. There are two major causes for this problem, the size of a framework and the vague framework requirements. The idea of framelet a small but complete framework, can be applied to solve the former. The framelet-based approach for framework development (FAFD) has been proposed to address the later. There are some improvements in term of use case requirements description to the approach after it was first presented. This paper aims to report such improvements as well as the ongoing researches on the FAFD.

A content delivery network (CDN) is expected to provide high performance content delivery, which requires scalable infrastructure to achieve global coverage. The provision of such infrastructure may form a substantial entry barrier for new CDN providers, as well as affecting commercial viability of the existing ones. Peering of CDNs can be a way to allow dynamic infrastructural cooperation between CDNs in a scalable manner, in order to mitigate the impact of flash crowds and to achieve better overall service times. In this paper, we present a quality of service (QoS)-driven model to evaluate the user perceived performance of CDN peering relationships. In this model, an overloaded CDN redirects a fraction of its incoming requests to peered CDNs and thereby can avoid the impact of flash crowds. The model-based approach also assists in making concrete QoS guarantee for a given CDN. Our approach endeavors to achieve scalability for a CDN in a user transparent manner.

In this paper, we propose an efficient algorithm, NCLOSED, for mining the N k-closed itemsets with the highest supports for 1 up to a certain k max value. The algorithm adopts best-first search strategy to generate closed itemsets with highest remaining supports. It does not keep closed itemsets mined in main memory to ensure that they are really closed. This is because this algorithm can directly generate closed itemsets. Moreover, duplicated closed itemsets are detected and discarded from this algorithm.
