Gossip learning (GL), as a decentralized alternative to federated learning (FL), is more suitable for resourceconstrained wireless networks, such as Flying Ad-Hoc Networks (FANETs) that are formed by unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). GL can significantly enhance the efficiency and extend the battery life of UAV networks. Despite the advantages, the performance of GL is strongly affected by data distribution, communication speed, and network connectivity. However, how these factors influence the GL convergence is still unclear. Existing work studied the convergence of GL based on a virtual quantity for the sake of convenience, which failed to reflect the real state of the network when some nodes are inaccessible. In this paper, we formulate and investigate the impact of inaccessible nodes to GL under a dynamic network topology. We first decompose the weight divergence by whether the node is accessible or not. Then, we investigate the GL convergence under the dynamic of node accessibility and theoretically provide how the number of inaccessible nodes, data non-i.i.d.-ness, and duration of inaccessibility affect the convergence. Extensive experiments are carried out in practical settings to comprehensively verify the correctness of our theoretical findings.

In the age of AI, mobile architectures such as smartphones are still "cold machines"; machines do not feel. If the architecture is able to feel users' feelings and runtime user experience (UX), it will accordingly adapt performance/energy to find the optimal system-operating state that consumes the least energy to satisfy users. In this paper, we will utilize users' facial expressions (FEs) to learn their runtime UX. We know that FEs are the natural and direct way for humans to convey their emotions and feelings. Our study reveals that FEs also reflect UX. Our research for the first time quantifies the link between FEs and UX. Leveraging this link, the architecture will be able to use the front camera to see FEs and feel users' UX. Based on UX, the architecture can appropriately provision computing resources. We propose Vi-energy system to realize the above idea. Our evaluation shows that Vi-energy reduces energy consumption by 52.9% at maximum and secures UX.

FireXnet: an explainable AI-based tailored deep learning model for wildfire detection on resource-constrained devices

Forests cover nearly one-third of the Earth’s land and are some of our most biodiverse ecosystems. Due to climate change, these essential habitats are endangered by increasing wildfires. Wildfires are not just a risk to the environment, but they also pose public health risks. Given these issues, there is an indispensable need for efficient and early detection methods. Conventional detection approaches fall short due to spatial limitations and manual feature engineering, which calls for the exploration and development of data-driven deep learning solutions. This paper, in this regard, proposes 'FireXnet', a tailored deep learning model designed for improved efficiency and accuracy in wildfire detection. FireXnet is tailored to have a lightweight architecture that exhibits high accuracy with significantly less training and testing time. It contains considerably reduced trainable and non-trainable parameters, which makes it suitable for resource-constrained devices. To make the FireXnet model visually explainable and trustable, a powerful explainable artificial intelligence (AI) tool, SHAP (SHapley Additive exPlanations) has been incorporated. It interprets FireXnet’s decisions by computing the contribution of each feature to the prediction. Furthermore, the performance of FireXnet is compared against five pre-trained models — VGG16, InceptionResNetV2, InceptionV3, DenseNet201, and MobileNetV2 — to benchmark its efficiency. For a fair comparison, transfer learning and fine-tuning have been applied to the aforementioned models to retrain the models on our dataset. The test accuracy of the proposed FireXnet model is 98.42%, which is greater than all other models used for comparison. Furthermore, results of reliability parameters confirm the model’s reliability, i.e., a confidence interval of [0.97, 1.00] validates the certainty of the proposed model’s estimates and a Cohen’s kappa coefficient of 0.98 proves that decisions of FireXnet are in considerable accordance with t

EpiTESTER: Testing Autonomous Vehicles with Epigenetic Algorithm and Attention Mechanism

Testing autonomous vehicles (AVs) under various environmental scenarios that lead the vehicles to unsafe situations is known to be challenging. Given the infinite possible environmental scenarios, it is essential to find critical scenarios efficiently. To this end, we propose a novel testing method, named EpiTESTER, by taking inspiration from epigenetics, which enables species to adapt to sudden environmental changes. In particular, EpiTESTER adopts gene silencing as its epigenetic mechanism, which regulates gene expression to prevent the expression of a certain gene, and the probability of gene expression is dynamically computed as the environment changes. Given different data modalities (e.g., images, lidar point clouds) in the context of AV, EpiTESTER benefits from a multi-model fusion transformer to extract high-level feature representations from environmental factors and then calculates probabilities based on these features with the attention mechanism. To assess the cost-effectiveness of EpiTESTER, we compare it with a classical genetic algorithm (GA) (i.e., without any epigenetic mechanism implemented) and EpiTESTER with equal probability for each gene. We evaluate EpiTESTER with four initial environments from CARLA, an open-source simulator for autonomous driving research, and an end-to-end AV controller, Interfuser. Our results show that EpiTESTER achieved a promising performance in identifying critical scenarios compared to the baselines, showing that applying epigenetic mechanisms is a good option for solving practical problems. © 2023, CC BY.

INNSE: Invertible neural network-based DNA image storage with self-correction encoding

DNA storage has become an alternative to silicon-based storage of media. However, when used to store multimodal data such as images, it fails to take full advantage of the characteristics of high correlation and variability present in such data, and currently remains inferior in terms of encoding density and time complexity. It also has the shortcoming of weak performance in terms of error correction methods to address insertion and deletion errors caused by error crosstalk. Therefore, we proposed an invertible neural network-based DNA image storage self-correction encoding method (INNSE) that uses the invertibility of network to perform up-down sampling processing on image and video data, thereby greatly reducing the number of DNA sequences required for data storage. A codebook generator was then designed to encode low-dimensional vectors into DNA sequences that meet various constraints. Finally, a self-correction method was constructed to achieve DNA sequence error correction at the base level without adding any redundant information. Our experimental results showed that, compared to the Yin-Yang algorithm, the encoding density of INNSE was increased by 3×, encoding time complexity was reduced by 95.26%. Under a simulated error rate of 2%, PSNR and SSIM were raised by 80.88% and 63.82%, respectively, proving that INNSE has significant advantages in encoding performance and error correction ability. © 2025

Traditional LiDAR SLAM approaches prioritize localization over mapping, yet high-precision dense maps are essential for numerous applications involving intelligent agents. Recent advancements have introduced methods leveraging neural fields to enhance mapping capabilities;however, these approaches still face several limitations. Firstly, concerning scene representation, they typically employ neural fields with high-dimensional features and multi-layer perceptron decoders utilizing non-continuous activation functions. This results in low learning efficiency and challenges in capturing high-frequency signals. Secondly, in terms of scene organization, these methods often treat the entire scene as a singular neural field, leading to inefficiencies, inflexibility, and difficulties in rectifying accumulated errors when mapping large-scale environments over extended periods. To tackle the first issue, we propose a lightweight continuous SDF regression approach by encoding the scene in single-valued embeddings and decoding SDF values from a Kolmogorov-Arnold Network. By minimizing discrepancies in measuring range, sampling distance, and decoded SDF values, we facilitate iterative frame-to-model tracking and bundle adjustment neural mapping. To mitigate the second challenge, we propose structuring the whole scene into multiple neural SDF submaps. By establishing node-node, node-submap, and loop closure constraints into a global pose graph, the system can create dense neural maps with global consistency across large-scale scenes. Experimental evaluations in both real-world and simulated settings indicate that our system achieves superior mapping completeness and accuracy, enhanced learning efficiency, reduced memory consumption, and greater flexibility compared to its counterparts. © 2025 IEEE.

We present AircraftVerse, a publicly available aerial vehicle design dataset. Aircraft design encompasses different physics domains and, hence, multiple modalities of representation. The evaluation of these cyber-physical system (CPS) designs requires the use of scientific analytical and simulation models ranging from computer- aided design tools for structural and manufacturing analysis, computational fluid dynamics tools for drag and lift computation, battery models for energy estimation, and simulation models for flight control and dynamics. AircraftVerse contains 27,714 diverse air vehicle designs - the largest corpus of engineering designs with this level of complexity. Each design comprises the following artifacts: a symbolic design tree describing topology, propulsion subsystem, battery subsystem, and other design details; a STandard for the Exchange of Product (STEP) model data; a 3D CAD design using a stereolithography (STL) file format; a 3D point cloud for the shape of the design; and evaluation results from high fidelity state-of-the-art physics models that characterize performance metrics such as maximum flight distance and hover-time. We also present baseline surrogate models that use different modalities of design representation to predict design performance metrics, which we provide as part of our dataset release. Finally, we discuss the potential impact of this dataset on the use of learning in aircraft design and, more generally, in CPS. AircraftVerse is accompanied by a data card, and it is released under Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike (CC BY-SA) license. Blockchain technology has piqued the interest of businesses of all types, while consistently improving and adapting to business requirements. Several blockchain platforms have emerged, making it challenging to select a suitable one for a specific type of business. This paper presents a classification of over one hundred blockchain platforms. We develop smart contracts for detecting healthcare insurance frauds using the top two blockchain platforms selected based on our proposed decision-making map approach which selects the top suitable platforms for healthcare insurance frauds detection application. Our classification shows that the largest percentage of platforms can be used for all types of application domains, the second biggest percentage for financial services, and a small number is to develop applications in specific domains. Our decision-making map and performance evaluations reveal that Hyperledger Fabric surpassed Neo in all metrics for detecting healthcare insurance frauds.
