In software engineering, design patterns propose solution skeletons for common design problems. The solution skeleton is described in such a way that the design can be used for other projects, where each application tailors the design to specific project constraints. This paper describes research into investigating how a similar approach to reuse can be applied to requirements specifications, which we term requirements patterns. Specifically, the paper explores how object-oriented modeling notations, such as the Unified Modeling Language (UML), can be used to represent common requirements patterns. Structural and behavioral information are captured as part of a requirements pattern. In order to maximise reuse, we focus on requirements patterns for embedded systems. This paper also describes case studies that illustrate how we have applied these general patterns to multiple embedded systems applications from the automotive industry.

software on wearable computers must adapt to dynamic environmental conditions, such as changes in packet loss behavior on wireless communication channels. This paper investigates the use of programming language constructs to realize adaptive behavior. A prototype language, Adaptive Java, was used to construct MetaSocket components, whose composition and behavior can be adapted to changing conditions during execution. MetaSockets were then integrated into Pavilion, a web-based collaboration framework, and experiments were conducted on a mobile computing testbed containing Xybernaut MA-V wearable computer systems. Performance results demonstrate the utility of MetaSockets in reducing file transfer time and enhancing the quality of interactive audio streams.

Many middleware platforms use computational reflection to support adaptive functionality. Most approaches intertwine the activity of observing behavior (introspection) with the activity of changing behavior (intercession). This paper explores the use of language constructs to separate these parts of reflective functionality. This separation and "packaging" of reflective primitives is intended to facilitate the design of correct and consistent adaptive middleware. A prototype language, called Adaptive Java, is described in which this functionality is realized through extensions to the Java programming language. A case study is described in which "metamorphic" socket components are created from regular socket classes and used to realize adaptive behavior on wireless network connections.

This paper describes an experimental study in the use of a composable proxy framework to improve the quality of interactive audio streams delivered to mobile hosts. Two forward error correction (FEC) proxylets are developed, one using block erasure codes, and the other using the GSM 06.10 encoding algorithm. Separately, each type of FEC improves the ability of the audio stream to tolerate errors in a wireless LAN environment. When composed in a single proxy, however, they cooperate to correct additional types of burst errors. Results are presented from a performance study conducted on a mobile computing testbed. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2001.

In order to satisfy, the complex and various demands of the customers, telecommunication networks must provide their services rapidly and flexibly, with the support of efficient service and network management systems. To fulfill these requirements, TINA has appeared as a concept for the advanced telecommunication system using information technology such as distributed processing, object oriented modeling. We mention some problems of developing applications in the TINA service management layer. To solve the problems, we propose the advanced architecture called OMS (object management system), which consists of three managers (data manager, data access manager and metadata registry manager). OMS separates the application layer and the middleware such as ODBC and JDBC. And the application layer and OMS are connected by distributed object middleware based on CORBA. Also in order to manage efficiently managed objects stored in different repositories, we have implemented metadata registry by using the metadata concept.

This paper reports on an ongoing research project aimed at designing and deploying a COMA Commodity Grid (COG) Kit. The overall goal of this project is to explore how commodity distributed computing technologies and state-of-the-art software engineering practices can be used for the development of advanced Grid applications. As part of this activity, we are investigating how CORBA can be integrated with the existing Grid infrastructure. In this paper, we present the design of a CORBA Commodity Grid Kit that provides a software development framework for building a CORBA "Grid domain." We then present our experiences in developing a prototype CORBA COG Kit that supports the development and deployment of CORBA applications on the Grid by providing them access to the Grid services provided by the Globus toolkit. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2001.

Static mixed-mode presentations consisting of verbal explanations illustrated with diagrams have long been used to communicate information. With the advent of multimedia, such presentations have become dynamic, by migrating from paper to the computer and by adding interactivity and animation. The conventional wisdom is that computer-based multimedia presentations are better than printed presentations. However, does the communicative power of mixed-mode representations stem from their careful design to match cognitive processes involved in comprehension or from their interactive and animated nature? This is an important issue that has never been investigated. This paper first presents a cognitive model of comprehension of mixed-mode representations. We describe how this model generates design guidelines for mixed-mode representations that present expository material in two domains - the concrete domain of mechanical systems and the abstract domain of computer algorithms. We then report on a series of studies that compared computer-based interactive multimedia presentations and their paper-based counterparts. Both were designed in accordance with the comprehension model and were compared against each other and against competing representational forms such as books, CD-ROMs, and animations. These studies indicate that the effectiveness of mixed-mode presentations has more to do with their match with comprehension processes than the medium of presentation. In other words, benefits of interactivity and animation are likely being overstated in the current milieu of fascination with multimedia. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2000.

We have developed a new, robust clustering algorithm, Self-Splitting Competitive Learning (SSCL). It has shown great abilities in detecting not only isolated clusters, but overlapped clusters, curves and spherical shells. We apply SSCL to quantization of color images. The clustering algorithm iteratively partitions the color space into natural clusters without a prior information on the number of clusters. The algorithm starts with only a single color prototype and adaptively splits it into multiple prototypes during the learning process based on a split validity measure. It is able to discover all natural groups; each is associated with a color prototype. The experimental results show remarkably better performance as compared to several other existing clustering algorithms.

software architectural styles that represent structural characteristics of software programs range from specific ones that can be applied to a particular domain to generic ones that can be applied to any domain. If a specific architectural style is available for the target system to be developed, it is appropriate to apply it together with its associated modeling method. However, no quantitative evaluation on the efficiency of specific architectural styles has as yet been reported. This paper presents a quantitative comparison of two architectural styles: specific and generic software architectural styles. The comparison shows that a specific architectural style combined with its associated modeling method allows us to reduce modeling cost as much as a few scores of percent compared with the generic one combined with its modeling method. The improvement results from the characteristics that (1) a specific software architectural style requires less rewriting of modeling diagrams due to its inherent basic structure and (2) there is less redundant information among modeling diagrams.

This report summarises and builds on the results of the "Directions and Methodologies for Empirical software engineering Research" group discussion. In particular, we considered the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats to empirical software engineering research in light of the discussions and presentations during the workshop. The following sections describe each of these aspects of our discussion in turn. In addition, to finalise our discussion we agreed on a three-point plan for future work.
