The paper presents a new text transform algorithm suitable for embedding in compression algorithms. The strategy the new algorithm employed to increase performance of text compression is to replace words with predefined codes. Instead of using a huge dictionary containing exhaustive words as in previous works, the new algorithm uses a list of stoplists and/or frequent words. The research devised different encoding schemes for such a list. It then made experiments of using these schemes with different compression algorithms on standard texts. The result shows that each scheme gives increasing compression when using with specific compression algorithms.

We propose an architecture-based testing and reliability framework for mobile applications. During our literature study, we explored some of the software testing and reliability techniques available, as well as investigating the techniques that are being used by industry. This paper presents case studies of two companies that are developing mobile applications. These are helpful for finding the strengths and weaknesses of existing software testing and reliability techniques. In light of these strengths and weaknesses, we propose a framework of architecture-based software testing and reliability estimation for mobile applications. © 2008 Springer-Verlag.

The focus of this paper is a construction of better knowledge base in case-based classifier system. Our knowledge base structure is based on concept lattice where rules are built from its subconcept-superconcept relation. Since the lattice can only be constructed from inputs with binary attributes, descriptive and numeric attributes must be transformed to binary attributes. In this paper, we propose the transformation of numeric attributes to descriptive attributes using fuzzy set theory. We experiment on benchmark data sets, Car and Iris, to determine the performance in term of number of rules used and classification precision. The results show that trend of accuracy is proportional to the size of learning inputs. The number of rules used is relatively small compared with size of training data. Our case-based classifier produces very promising results in practice and can classify the new problem more accurate than traditional classifiers. Copyright 2008 ACM.

Approaches to software process development that are based on the principles and practices of software engineering have been advocated by many researchers as a means to produce software processes that meet the needs of process users. Such approaches require methodical and repeatable verification and validation techniques that enable effective and efficient identification, analysis and correction of software process defects. Defect classification schemes have proven to be effective for characterizing and improving the quality of software products. It is reasonable, therefore, to suggest that a similar scheme for the classification of process defects may provide comparable support to those performing software process engineering activities. This paper proposes a defect typology that can be used to classify software process defects as definition, asset, context or documentation problems. The paper then discusses potential applications of the typology to software process verification and validation and concludes by suggesting areas for further research.

The multiobjective Quadratic Assignment Problem (mQAP) is considered as one of the hardest optimization problems but with many real-world applications. Since it may not be possible to simply weight the importance of each flow for the mQAP, it is best to use Pareto optimization to obtain the Pareto front or an approximation of it. Although Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) algorithm has exhibited good performance across a wide range of application problems, research on mQAP has not much been investigated. This paper introduces a fuzzy particle swarm algorithm to handle the Multiobjective Quadratic Assignment Problem (mQAP)- In the fuzzy scheme, the representations of the position and velocity of the particles in the conventional PSO is extended from the real vectors to fuzzy matrices. A new mapping is introduced between the particles in the swarm and the problem space in an efficient way. We evaluated the performance of the proposed approach. Empirical results illustrate that the approach can be applied for solving mQAP's very effectively. © 2008 IEEE.

Framework-based software development has been proven a useful technique to develop an application. However, the development of a large application framework itself is considered complex. There are two major causes for this problem, the size of a framework and the vague framework requirements. The idea of framelet a small but complete framework, can be applied to solve the former. The framelet-based approach for framework development (FAFD) has been proposed to address the later. There are some improvements in term of use case requirements description to the approach after it was first presented. This paper aims to report such improvements as well as the ongoing researches on the FAFD.

In this paper, we propose an efficient algorithm, NCLOSED, for mining the N k-closed itemsets with the highest supports for 1 up to a certain k max value. The algorithm adopts best-first search strategy to generate closed itemsets with highest remaining supports. It does not keep closed itemsets mined in main memory to ensure that they are really closed. This is because this algorithm can directly generate closed itemsets. Moreover, duplicated closed itemsets are detected and discarded from this algorithm.

In this paper, we proposed an efficient algorithm, TOPK_CLOSED, for mining top-k closed itemsets. This algorithm mines top-k closed itemsets using best-first search. The closed itemsets with the highest supports are firstly found from this algorithm. Consequently, the method quickly finds top-k closed itemsets, which leads to an efficient pruning unnecessary itemsets and stop mining rapidly. In addition, this algorithm can generate closed itemsets without keeping candidates in main memory.

This paper examines transformational learning experiences of computing students as a way to better understand threshold concepts in computing. From empirical evidence we found that students often describe transformative experiences as learning situations in which they were led to use various kinds of abstraction, for example modularity, data abstraction, inheritance, polymorphism, reuse, design patterns, and complexity. Some students describe an abstract concept as coming first, and then needing to be made concrete though application;others describe transformations in which they learn the advantages of these abstract concepts from their experience of not using them. Abstraction is certainly of central importance in computer science. It appears, however, from our students' descriptions of transformative experiences, that abstraction per se is not a threshold, but that particular concepts in which abstraction is paramount exhibit the characteristics of threshold concepts.
