The paper describes engineering a system for a distributed Austrian Alpine road-pricing environment as well as the structure and organization of the software development. The client/server-based road-pricing system, handling on average 1.2 million vehicle transitions per month, had be to operational within a mere eight months after the start of the project. Current practical and industrial problems of client/server system strategies are discussed. Our main theses derived from the presented case study are: in current medium to large software engineering tasks there is a need for a) technical specialists for industrially identified project stress points (database, network, front-end) with experience in large projects, b) a project and process plan for a (very) short development time frame before production, and c) a dynamic production-oriented process model rather than a traditional linear process model.

Infectious disease threats to individual and public health are numerous, varied and frequently unexpected. Artificial intelligence (AI) and related technologies, which are already supporting human decision making in economics, medicine and social science, have the potential to transform the scope and power of infectious disease epidemiology. Here we consider the application to infectious disease modelling of AI systems that combine machine learning, computational statistics, information retrieval and data science. We first outline how recent advances in AI can accelerate breakthroughs in answering key epidemiological questions and we discuss specific AI methods that can be applied to routinely collected infectious disease surveillance data. Second, we elaborate on the social context of AI for infectious disease epidemiology, including issues such as explainability, safety, accountability and ethics. Finally, we summarize some limitations of AI applications in this field and provide recommendations for how infectious disease epidemiology can harness most effectively current and future developments in AI. © Springer Nature Limited 2025.

Dual-lifecycle software processes have the potential to significantly improve the way in which suites of software applications are generated and sustained. However, several outstanding issues need to be more adequately addressed before the full potential of this philosophy can be realized. Detailed strategies for maintaining domain architectures in parallel with suites of fielded applications are at present particularly conspicuous by their absence. In this paper, we present a dual-lifecycle maintenance process that was developed for the ROSE (Reusable Object software engineering) project, a major reengineering and repository-building effort in the domain of flight design and dynamics. We present the major features of the process, the rationale behind these features, and changes which we feel would be beneficial based on lessons learned from the application of the process. The process is presented using a variant of the Fusion object-oriented design method known as Profusion.

Prominent organizations, currently, have analytical data-driven tool to support their decision making. A chart-like dashboard is the most appropriate tool to make integrated decisions encompassing multiple functions based on relevance information systems. Such tools, however, are commonly used in commercial firms rather than in the public organizations, especially in the education sections. It is crucial that several missions for the higher education in Thailand, such as graduate performance, research study, academic services to the society, and art & culture preservation, need a decision supporting tool to accomplish such goals. In this paper, we propose the dashboard framework for Higher Education, called TheDB (Thailand higher education DashBoard). It is generally very challenging for the higher education to have their own dashboards for different levels in the organization. We have implemented TheDB framework in nursing colleges of Public Health Ministry. In addition, they explicit their work operation via the dashboard for education quality assurance audited and approved by both related authorize organizations, including Thailand Nursing Council.

The context-awareness is a central aspect in the design of pervasive systems, characterizing their ability to adapt its structure and behavior. The context-aware exception handling (CAEH) is an existing approach employed to design exception handling in pervasive systems. In this approach, the context is used to define, detect, propagate, and handle exceptions. CAEH is a complex and error prone activity, needing designers' insights and domain expertise to identify and characterize contextual exceptions. However, despite the existence of formal methods to analyze the adaptive behavior of pervasive systems, such methods lack specific support to specify the CAEH behavior. In this paper, we propose a formal model to reason about the CAEH behavior. It comprises an extension of the Kripke Structure to model the context evolution of a pervasive system and a transformation function that derivates the CAEH control flow from that proposed structure.

The article takes a look at an algorithm of decision making in educational management data system based on the Analytic Hierarchy Process. This technique allows to choose the best of the proposed alternatives, the characteristics of which are vectors with heterogeneous individual components including those that are not clearly defined. The architecture of a decision-making support system that implements the proposed algorithm is suggested.

Distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks on the Internet have become an immediate problem. As DDoS streams do not have common characteristics, currently available intrusion detection systems (IDS) cannot detect them accurately. As a result, defend DDoS attacks based on current available IDS will dramatically affect legitimate traffic. In this paper, we propose a distributed approach to defend against distributed denial of service attacks by coordinating across the Internet. Unlike traditional IDS, we detect and stop DDoS attacks within the intermediate network. In the proposed approach, DDoS defence systems are deployed in the network to detect DDoS attacks independently. A gossip based communication mechanism is used to exchange information about network attacks between these independent detection nodes to aggregate information about the overall network attacks observed. Using the aggregated information, the individual defence nodes have approximate information about global network attacks and can stop them more effectively and accurately. To provide reliable, rapid and widespread dissemination of attack information, the system is built as a peer to peer overlay network on top of the internet. With the progress of sensor technologies, there has been an increase in the number of connected computing devices capable of collecting information and interacting with the environment in which they are inserted, forming the basis of the Internet of Things (IoT). Such devices enable the development of new applications capable of making cities more intelligent, providing improvements to society and urban infrastructure. As a result of the interaction between different applications, there is a large set of data, from which useful knowledge can be extracted. An important problem to be faced is the recurrent occurrence of arbovirus outbreaks in big cities with tropical climate. This research proposes an architecture capable of aggregating data from different types of IoT devices, and manipulating them using data analytics techniques to assist the surveillance of arbovirus outbreaks. As an example of case study, we present an exploratory analysis of climatology data and cases of arbovirus diseases in the city of Fortaleza, Ceara, Brazil, between the years of 2011 and 2017.
