The concept of beauty has fascinated humans since the beginning of their existence. To inspire research questions on the beauty of software architecture, we use the progress in other areas, like civil architecture and plastic surgery. Our most important findings are that practitioners view software architecture as beautiful if it reduces their effort to work with it and that the beauty of software architecture greatly impacts the happiness and motivation of the developers working on it. Overall, this research paper gives insights into the definition of beautiful software architecture in practice and explains its importance. Additionally, we propose ways to create beautiful software architecture and teach it. The focus on beauty in software architecture is essential in mid- to large-sized projects to increase the developers’ happiness and, therefore, the quality of the product.

We identified and organized a number of statements about technical debt (TD Folklore list) expressed by practitioners in online websites, blogs and published papers. We chose 14 statements and we evaluated them through two surveys (37 practitioners answered the questionnaires), ranking them by agreement and consensus. The statements most agreed with show that TD is an important factor in software project management and not simply another term for “bad code”. This study will help the research community in identifying folklore that can be translated into research questions to be investigated, thus targeting attempts to provide a scientific basis for TD management.

He received a bachelor of electrical engineering degree from College of the City of New York in 1960. Mr. Stern joined Dynell Electronics Corporation in 1971 and became part of the Robotic Vision Systems Inc. staff at the time of its spin-off from Dynell. He was program manager of the various three-dimensional sensing and replication systems constructed by Dynell and Robotic Vision Systems. As program manager his responsibilities encompassed technical administrative and operational areas. The first two portrait sculpture studio systems and the first three replication systems built by Robotic Vision Systems Inc. were designed manufactured and operated under his direction. Before joining Dynell Mr. Stern was a senior engineer at Instrument Systems Corporation and chief engineer of the Special Products Division of General Instrument Corporation. Prior to these positions Mr. Stern was chief engineer of Edo Commercial Corporation. At General Instrument and Edo Commercial he was responsible for the design and manufacture of military and commercial avionics equipment. Mr. Stern is presently responsible for directing the systems design and development for all of the company's programs. Robert J. Metzger:is currently engineering group leader at Robotic Vision Systems Inc. He graduated summa cum laude from the Cooper Union in 1972 with a bachelor of electrical engineering degree. Under sponsorship of a National Science Foundation graduate fellowship he graduated from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1974 with the degrees of electrical engineer and master of science (electrical engineering). In 1979 Mr. Metzger graduated from Polytechnic Institute of New York with the degree of master of science (computer science). Ship's propellers are currently measured by manual procedures using pitchometers, templates and gauges. This measurement process is extremely tedious, labor intensive and time consuming. In an effort to provide increased accuracy, repeatability and cost effectiveness in propeller manufacture, an automated propeller optical measurement system (APOMS) has been built which rapidly and automatically scans an entire ship's propeller using a 3-D vision sensor. This equipment is integrated with a propeller robotic automated templating system (PRATS) and the propeller optical finishing system (PROFS) which robotically template and grind the propeller to its final shape, using the APOMS-derived data for control feedback. The optical scanning and the final shape are both controlled by CAD/CAM data files describing the desired propeller shape. An automated propeller balancing system is incorporated into the PROFS equipment. The APOMS/PRATS/PROFS equipment is expected to provide lower propeller manufacturing costs.

Technical debt is a term that has been used to describe the increased cost of changing or maintaining a system due to shortcuts taken during its development. As technical debt is a recent research area, its different types and their indicators are not organized yet. Therefore, this paper proposes an ontology of terms on technical debt in order to organize a common vocabulary for the area. The organized concepts derived from the results of a systematic literature mapping. The proposed ontology was evaluated in two steps. In the first one, some ontology design quality criteria were used. For the second one, a specialist in the area performed an initial evaluation. This work contributes to evolve the Technical Debt Landscape through the organization of the different types of technical debt and their indicators. We consider this an important contribution for both researchers and practitioners because this information was spread out in the literature hindering their use in research and development activities.

Intrusion detection systems (IDSs) have been substantially improved in recent past. However, network attacks have become more sophisticated and increasingly complex: many of current attacks are coordinated and originated in multiple networks. To detect these attacks, IDSs need to obtain information on network events from multiple networks or administrative domains. This work demonstrates that a Distributed IDS (DIDS) can be composed of existing IDSs, improving the detection of misuses in a multiple network environment. We use a grid middleware for creating a service-based intrusion detection grid. We demonstrate through experimental results that the proposed DIDS allows the integration of heterogeneous existing IDSs and improves the detection of attacks by exploring the synergy between existing IDSs.

Additive manufacturing is an innovative production approach aimed at creating products that traditional techniques cannot produce with the desired quality and requirements. Throughout the additive manufacturing process, data is either used (such as materials properties, printer characteristics and settings) or generated (such as monitoring data during printing, slicing strategies setting parameters). However, managing such data with complex relationships remains a significant challenge in both research and industry in the additive manufacturing field. To address this issue, we developed a modular ontology that can be used as the basis for a framework that supports decision-making systems, facilitate semanticsaware data management, and enhance the understanding and optimization of additive manufacturing processes. In this paper we focus on one of the state-of-the-art additive manufacturing approaches, i.e., powder bed fusion. To show the use and the feasibility of our approach, we created a knowledge graph for an actual additive manufacturing experiment based on our ontology, and show how queries relevant to domain experts can be answered using this knowledge graph. © 2024 CEUR-WS. Exploring the Potential of 3d Printing Technology for Sustainable Plastic Roads: A Preliminary Investigation

The urgency of climate change has highlighted the need for sustainable road construction materials, replacing the conventional asphalt that significantly contributes to global warming and the urban heat island effect. With that in mind, the construction of the world's first 30-meter plastic road in Zwolle, Netherlands, in 2018 opened the door for novel plastic applications as paving materials. However, the current application is still limited to sidewalks and light-loaded cycling lanes. This preliminary study investigated the feasibility of using 3D printing technology to provide the required structural design flexibility for manufacturing plastic pavement modules able to sustain heavy traffic and extreme weather conditions. The suitability of six plastic materials for 3D printing was evaluated. Polylactic Acid (PLA), and Polyethylene Terephthalate Glycol (PETG) were identified as the most suitable materials for this study. Three small-scale structural systems, namely hollow modular with plastic columns, hollow modular with solid plastic cones, and hollow modular with X-bracing, were designed and successfully printed using the adopted materials and a 3D printer. The developed systems were then tested under compression to evaluate their structural performance under heavy traffic loads and prove the concept. The results showed that the PLA conic structural system was effective and exhibited the highest compression strength, while PETG conic system exhibited ductile behavior with superior thermal stability. The study suggested that the hybrid system of PLA and PETG materials may improve overall performance, combine flexibility and strength, and potentially improve resistance to extreme weather and heavy traffic. These findings proved that 3D printing technology has the potential to revolutionize the road construction industry and provide more sustainable solutions for infrastructure development. © 2023, The Authors. Due to the great advance in machine learning (ML) techniques, numerous ML models are expanding their application domains in recent years. To adapt for resource-constrained platforms such as mobile and Internet of Things (IoT) devices, pre-trained models are often processed to enhance their efficiency and compactness, using optimization techniques such as pruning and quantization. Similar to the optimization process in other complex systems, e.g., program compilers and databases, optimizations for ML models can contain bugs, leading to severe consequences such as system crashes and financial loss. While bugs in training, compiling and deployment stages have been extensively studied, there is still a lack of systematic understanding and characterization of model optimization bugs (MOBs). In this work, we conduct the first empirical study to identify and characterize MOBs. We collect a comprehensive dataset containing 371 MOBs from TensorFlow and PyTorch, the most extensively used open-source ML frameworks, covering the entire development time span of their optimizers (May 2019 to August 2022). We then investigate the collected bugs from various perspectives, including their symptoms, root causes, life cycles, detection and fixes. Our work unveils the status quo of MOBs in the wild, and reveals their features on which future detection techniques can be based. Our findings also serve as a warning to the developers and the users of ML frameworks, and an appeal to our research community to enact dedicated countermeasures.

The Plasmodium parasite, which causes malaria, is an acute fever illness that infects people when a female Anopheles mosquito bites them. It is predicted that malaria would claim 619,000 lives in 2021, with 96% of those deaths occurring in the African continent. We can achieve this by using a microscope to examine thick and thin blood smears. The proficiency of a microscope examiner is crucial for doing microscopic examinations. Consider how time-consuming, ineffective, and costly it would be to examine thousands of malaria cases. Consequently, Creating an automated method for detecting malaria parasites is the aim of this study. We employ a MobileNetV2 pretrained model with CNN technology. Because it has been trained on dozens or even millions of data points, this pretrained model is incredibly light but dependable. There are two main benefits of automatic malaria parasite detection: firstly, it can offer a more accurate diagnosis, particularly in locations with limited resources; secondly, it lowers diagnostic expenses. The optimizer utilizes Adam Weight, the criteria uses NLLLoss, and the model is trained using 32 for batch_size. In the fourteenth epoch, we obtained the maximum accuracy score of 96.26% based on the training data. The outcomes of the predictions demonstrate how excellent this score is. EfficienceNet, DenseNet, AlexNet, and other pretrained models are among the alternatives that scientists are advised to try training with.
