Sivashankar During the summer of 1993 he was a visiting scholar in the Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics Naval Postgraduate School Monterey CA where he worked on control systems for unmanned aerial vehicles. From 1993 to 2000 he was with Ford Research Laboratory working on several design aspects of powertrain control systems and processes for embedded control software development. He is currently the Vice President for Technology at Emmeskay Incorporated a company that provides systems engineering based products and services. His research interests include modeling and control of automotive systems application of systems engineering methods and tools to product development processes and multivariable robust control and estimation methods. Dr. Sivashankar has served as an associate editor for the ASME Journal of Dynamic Systems Measurement and Control.

With the increase in automotive powertrain complexity, an upfront assessment of powertrain capability in meeting its design targets is important early on in the development programs. The optimization of control policy based on powertrain simulation models can facilitate this assessment and establish limits of achievable performance for a given powertrain configuration and parameters. The paper discusses several computational optimization and user interface solutions for deploying a numerical optimal control approach in a user-friendly software environment.

In this paper, an uncalibrated dynamic visual servoing algorithm is proposed and analyzed. No calibration or robot model is needed. After a brief introduction of the development of uncalibrated visual servoing, the theoretical backgrounds and mathematical requirements of recursive least square (RLS) are stated respectively. Then the core uncalibrated visual servoing algorithm, in RLS form, or more technically, VS-RLS as well as its performance analysis, is investigated. After that, the experimental 6DOF Puma560 simulation of static and moving target tracking is demonstrated. Finally the weak and strength of the algorithm as well as the potential and promising improvements are discussed.

Precision airdrop is essential to insertion of military and humanitarian supplies at remote, globally distributed locations that are involved in conflict or have experienced natural disasters. Enabling precision payload delivery following high altitude release limits risk to carrier aircraft For the past eight years, the Army and Air Force have combined resources to facilitate major advances in precision, high altitude airdrop. This includes new means for on-board airdrop mission planning for an expanding set of ballistic parachute and guided parafoil airdrop systems that realize accuracy improvement by using detailed system dynamics models, high fidelity atmospheric state models, and means to generate and upload revised mission plans for guided airdrop systems. development and implementation of an open-architecture Guidance, Navigation, and Control (GN&C) system has also been pursued for use on large parafoil airdrop systems. Implementation features of the personal computer-based Precision Airdrop System (PADS) mission planner are reviewed and the parafoil GN&C design features are discussed. A review is provided of payload delivery performance realized using the PADS for a variety of ballistic and guided airdrop systems and using the GN&C system on the Dragonfly 10,000-lb class parafoil. Proposal of Two-Stage Patent Retrieval Method Considering the Claim Structure

The importance of patents is increasing in global society. In preparing a patent application, it is essential to search for related patents that may invalidate the invention. However, it is time-consuming to identify them among the millions of patents. This article proposes a patent-retrieval method that considers a claim structure for a more accurate search for invalidity. This method uses a claim text as input;it consists of two retrieval stages. In stage 1, general text analysis and retrieval methods are applied to improve recall. In stage 2, the top N documents retrieved in stage 1 are rearranged to improve precision by applying text analysis and retrieval methods using the claim structure. Our two-stage retrieval introduces five precision-oriented analysis and retrieval methods: query-term extraction from a portion of a claim text that describes the characteristics of a claim;query term-weighting without term frequency;query term-weighting with “measurement terms” text retrieval using only claims as a target;and calculating the relevant score by “partially” adding scores in stage 2 to those in stage 1. Evaluation results using test sets of the NTCIR4 Patent Retrieval Task show that our methods are effective, though the degree of the effectiveness varies depending on the test sets. © The importance of patents is increasing in global society. Based on experimental comparison, this paper discusses approximate solution methods of the medium-scale traveling salesman problem (TSP) that suit repetitive use in interactive simulation for globally optimizing a large-scale distribution network. For example, such a nationwide distribution network consists of approximate 1000 trucks. So, the optimization of such a distribution network needs repetitive interactive simulations, in each of which about 1000 TSPs are automatically solved after changing such conditions as the area division and the truck allocation and a human user waits and checks the results totally. Therefore, our proposed method applied genetic algorithms (GA), guarantees interactive responsiveness and realizes experts' level accuracy, through enabling to solve 1000 middle scale TSPs for a distribution network within 30 seconds within 3% errors. Experimental results proved that the proposed method enables to optimize a large-scale distribution network.

SET (Secure Electronic Transactions) is a credit payment protocol on the Internet. The SET specification has open parts in order to flexibly cope with various users' business requirements. Security requirements are also a kind of business requirements. Due to such open parts of the SET specification, the currently provided "compliance test" is not sufficient for assuring interoperability, though this test can verify whether the implementation of products complies with the SET specification. However, the ideal "interoperability test" is not practical. Thus, an informal but practical validation method, called a "step-wise prototyping method", is proposed to solve these problems through prototyping for various business applications. This method can validate the interoperability of products complying with the SET specification, or it can validate the SET specification itself, through a supplementary "compliance test". As a conclusion, the validation of business protocols on the Internet, such as SET, whose specification is frequently revised and has a large degree of open parts, has a serious problem which needs to be solved. Our proposed method can give a solution to that problem.

One problem in applying intelligent methods to real applications is to validate their expertise. Turing test approaches are useful in validating intelligent systems. Nevertheless, validation burdens experts with a heavy task. A concept called the "bi-directional, many-sided explanation typed multi-step validation method", which enables the sharing of validation tasks among experts, knowledge engineers and computers, is proposed to diminish this load. The principal characteristics of the validation tool are as follows: 1) effective and anonymous bidirectional interactive functions by way of a virtual anonymous ID, which enables the protection of the experts' social position; 2) a response accelerator that greatly improves the responsiveness of many-sided explanations by providing an experts' validation server to fetch and store large volumes of information in advance; and 3) a validation process management function that detects delays in busy expert validation processes.

The optimization of a large-scale distribution network is considered to be a nested combinatorial problem consisting of the following steps: (1) the decision about part delivery volume per part manufacturer; (2) the decision about depots and trucks for the transportation of parts; and (3) the generation of delivery routes for each truck. In such a nested combinatorial problem, a high-level and mathematically strict optimization is desirable as the first step. In addition, at each step, human multi-sided inspection is desired, which requires interactive simulation. Thus, for the first step, a method using linear programming (LP) is proposed. For the second and third steps, a method using a genetic algorithm (GA) is proposed. The latter guarantees interactive responsiveness and realizes expert-level accuracy, through enabling the solution of 1000 mid-scale traveling salesman problems (TSPs) for a distribution network within 30 seconds and within a 3% error. Experimental results proved that the proposed method enables the optimization of a nationwide large-scale distribution network.

To overcome the difficulties in the successful expertise of postal delivery and to make postal delivery more efficient and safe, a hybrid method for postal delivery route generation, integrating expertise with general algorithms, was proposed. Owing to this method, our system is able to automatically generate efficient delivery routes, which are also safe, considerate of the residents and their environment, and/or respect precedents or previous routes. Thus, this system can be used in various areas, from over-populated super-cities to conventional countryside areas. Furthermore, in the proposed method, the knowledge processing part and the general algorithm part are connected only by data called a "conceptual map", and the latter part is independent of domain knowledge that differs depending on experts, areas and time. Therefore, only the AI part needs modification in order to use this system in the various areas of offices or companies, and to use it for a long time.

To overcome the difficulties in acquiring experts' know-how as well as to realize more efficient deliveries, a delivery route scheduling method that combines a knowledge base with general algorithms is proposed. This method combines the knowledge base and the general algorithms by means of a "conceptual map" of experts' knowledge integrated into the map data, and they are combined using a goal-oriented knowledge architecture with a user interface, where the goal and its achievement strategies are selectable. Due to such a combination of flexible and selectable knowledge, this method can automatically generate efficient delivery routes, which are also safe, considerate of the residents and their environment, and/or respect the precedented routes. This method basically interfaces between the AI part and the general algorithm part only by way of the above-mentioned "conceptual map" data. The general algorithm part does not need to be modified if expertise, areas and times change. As a result, the system using this method can be easily extended and/or modified to be used, for example, in various areas from over-populated super-cities to countryside conservation. The proposed method can be generally applied to delivery route generation for parcels, mail, packages and parts necessary for production or maintenance.
