Complex information flows in the domain of industrial software systems complicate the creation of performance models to validate the challenging performance requirements. Performance models using annotated UML diagrams or mathematical notations are difficult to discuss with stakeholders from the industrial automation domain, who often have a limited software engineering background. We introduce a novel model transformation from Use Case Maps (UCM) to the Palladio Component Model (PCM), which enables performance modeling based on an intuitive notation for complex information flows. The resulting models can be solved using existing simulators or analytical solvers. We validated the correctness of the transformation with three case study models, and performed a user study. The results showed a performance prediction deviation of less than 10 percent compared to a reference model in most cases. © 2013 ACM.

Modern Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) provides flexible access to data center resources on demand in an elastic fashion to meet the highly variable workload requirements of cloud applications. Cloud providers aim to provision resources as efficiently and as quickly as possible to their consumers. However, the lack of information about the hosted applications and their workloads makes it hard for cloud providers to anticipate the future resource demands of their customers so that they can plan the capacity of their infrastructure. Cloud providers can receive arbitrary requests for allocating resources on-the-fly in a completely unpredictable manner. Given this unpredictability, it may happen that providers might not be able to provision the requested resources quickly enough, or in the worst case, they might ran out of capacity and may not be able to satisfy their customers resource demands. To address these concerns, in this paper we propose a new resource reservation mechanism, based on the concept of soft reservations, addressing the issue of uncertainty and lack of information concerning the expected future customer workloads and corresponding resource demands. The proposed resource reservation mechanism makes it possible for cloud providers to better plan the capacity of their infrastructure and continuously optimize the placement of virtual machines on physical nodes thus improving the infrastructure cost and energy efficiency. It also takes into account the uncertainty of resource demand estimations and enables proactive online capacity planning resulting in cost benefits for both cloud providers and cloud customers.

The increasing digitalization of our daily lives is gaining a new momentum recently in what is called the post-desktop era of computing. This wide spread in digitalization is made possible by the introduction of handy devices specifically of mobile phones, laptop computers, Smartphones, and tablets. This new trend in shaping up technological advancement presents new opportunities for mobile information presentation, processing, and synthesis in different spheres of application such as providing industrial field services engineering support. Industrial field service engineers execute sets of work orders on daily basis plans. These work order executions demand the availability of digital information anywhere anytime to process them faster. This paper presents a scenario where the newly emerging Smartphone features such as augmented reality, audio / video processing, and near field communication sensing can be used to develop a prototype that supports industrial field service engineers in the contemporary field service engineering taskforces. It employs real world use-cases and carrying out quantitative prototype usability test analysis.

This paper describes a large, unabridged data-set of Java source code gathered and shared as part of the Merobase Component Finder project of the software-Engineering Group at the University of Mannheim. It consists of the complete index used to drive the search engine, ***, the vast majority 1 of the source code modules accessible through it, and a tool that enables researchers to efficiently browse the collected data. We describe the techniques used to collect, format and store the data set, as well as the core capabilities of the Merobase search engine such as classic keyword-based, interface-based and test-driven search. This data-set, which represents one of the largest searchable collections of source and binary modules available online, has been recently made available for download and use in further research projects. This paper proposes the model-free PI control design for direct current (DC) drives. A model-free PI control system structure is considered in the framework of reference tracking control using a first-order nonlinear dynamic system as a local approximation of the process model. The derivatives are estimated numerically using a Savitzky-Golay filter that solves the differentiation and also the smoothing. The model-free PI control system structure is applied to the speed control of a laboratory nonlinear DC drive as a representative mechatronics application. The experimental results for three different reference input shapes show the very good performance in model reference tracking, reference trajectory tracking and numerical differentiation.

The paper analyzes transformation of a correct heterogeneous meta-program into 2-stage meta-programs. We propose a methodology and describe experiments to solve two tasks: 1) transformation of the 1-stage meta-program into the set of 2-stage meta-programs;2) checking hypothesis of the transformation equivalence under given transformation rules and constraints. The experimental results have shown that introduced formalism, rules and models ensure correctness of transformations, extend reuse dimension to automatically adapt (through transformations) variants of programs/meta-programs to different contexts of use, enable to better understand meta-program development/change processes and heterogeneous meta-programming perse. © 2012 Springer-Verlag.

Generative Learning Objects (GLOs) introduced by Boyle et al. in 2004 extend the reuse dimension and create conditions for better quality in learning and teaching. We motivate the benefits of GLOs for e-learning and extend the scope of understanding GLOs by introducing the concept of the two-stage GLOs (TS GLOs). The aim of the paper is to show how this new kind of GLOs can contribute to the advanced e-learning through e-learning variability (social context, content variants, e-learning environment characteristics, etc.) modelling. GLOs and TS GLOs are seen as tools to further enhance reuse, to ensure a great deal of flexibility for teachers, and to manage complexity in the LO domain. Our case study has also showed the benefit for students in using the approach for self-learning by selecting different tasks or variants with respect to students flavour or abilities. © 2012 Springer-Verlag.

We argue here that, in recent years, the world's financial markets have become a globally interconnected complex adaptive ultra-large-scale socio-technical system-of-systems, and that this has important consequences for how the financial markets should be engineered and managed in future. Major failures in the financial markets can now occur at super-human speeds, as was witnessed in the "Flash Crash" of May 6th 2010. Events such as the Flash Crash may become more commonplace in future, unless lessons are learned from other fields where complex adaptive socio-technical systems-of-systems have to be engineered for high-integrity, safety-critical applications. In this document we review the literature on failures in risky technology and high-integrity approaches to safety-critical SoS engineering. We conclude with an argument that, in the specific case of the global financial markets, there is an urgent need to develop major national strategic modeling and predictive simulation capabilities, comparable to national-scale meteorological monitoring and modeling capabilities. The intent here is not to predict the price-movements of particular financial instruments or asset classes, but rather to provide test-rigs for principled evaluation of systemic risk, estimating probability density functions over spaces of possible outcomes, and thereby identifying potentially high-consequence failure modes in the simulations, before they occur in real life, by which time it is typically too late. © 2012 Springer-Verlag.
