Modern information visualization in focussed on new methods for visual mappings and novel strategies for interaction and navigation through various types of view of a visual form. The paper presents the Bloom platform for visualization of complex networks with highly related entities and aggregations, both able to possess complex data attributes. It discusses two case studies assessing the scalability of the tool by creating a visualization of the large, complex networks - one of Ottawa Centre for Research and Innovation, containing data of approximately 1,900 companies aggregated within a cluster hierarchy, and another of Danish companies' cluster. There are presented various visualization layouts of the company network and a representation of some company data properties over Google maps. © 2011 ACM.

in the paper, we analyze and study the status character in detail which a rotor of some rotating mechanism exist in some different fault types and different fault strengths. The research result shows that a fault rotor reveals distinct return map images, which the rotor runs hi different malfunction status or different malfunction strengths. The research gives an effective method to explore fault character of complex mechanism chaotic dynamic system.

Outsourcing is gaining an increasing presence in the US software development industry. As the Internet develops in emerging economies, the infrastructure required for effective outsourcing is maturing. The US software development workforce is now faced with viable competition from countries where software developer salaries are lower by an order of magnitude. In technical software engineering education, code development is emphasized as a basis of laboratory exercises and hands-on experience. Outsourcing trends bring several challenges to the technical education table. As software engineering educators, how can we prepare our students for a workforce where a key aspect of the education we provide may prove irrelevant in the near future? This paper studies the issue of outsourcing in the software engineering educational environment as a required component of a software engineering project. The first aspect presented is the outsourcing of a capstone project for the Bachelor of Science in software Engineering technology program to a developer or development team in an emerging economy. An operational process is presented showing how this was done to bring outsourcing as a viable activity for student projects. The second aspect examines application of the developed framework for outsourcing as a key component of developing large scale software systems. The junior project sequence is used as a test platform where five student teams are tasked with outsourcing a component of their project given a budget of $50.00 per team. The outcome impacts their final grade. The results of this activity are presented and analyzed. Outsourcing of software development will increase in the software development industry as Internet based support infrastructure matures. The topics explored here deal with how to embrace outsourcing trends to prepare students for globally distributed software development. © American Society for Engineering Education, 2010.

Effectively teaching human-centered design can pose challenges within the undergraduate curriculum as it requires access to users and stakeholders. Service-learning, a growing pedagogy within engineering, offers many synergistic opportunities to create a human-centered design experience. In service-learning, students are paired with a real user in a real community and asked to address a real need. This paper presents the implementation of a human-centered design approach using service-learning at Purdue University. The approach is multidisciplinary with participation from students within and outside of engineering. The design process and curricular structure is discussed along with example projects that illustrate the approach from the perspectives including mechanical, electrical and software design. Successes and challenges are also discussed. © American Society for Engineering Education, 2010.

It was with great excitement that we planned the combined meetings of Northeast Aquaculture Conference and Exposition (NACE) and the International Conference on Shellfish Restoration (ICSR) with the 33rd Milford Aquaculture Seminar (MAS). Bringing these different but complementary audiences together resulted in a meeting that combined many different aspects of fisheries restoration and aquaculture under one *** hundred attendees including government representatives, research scientists, industry, and academia at both the university and vocational high school levels attended this event. The meeting commenced on Wednesday December 12th 2012, with over eighty people attending seven field trips to area aquaculture farms and research facilities. The formal program began on Thursday, December 13th with a plenary session including invited speakers Eric Schwabb, Acting Assistant Secretary for Conservation and Management at NOAA; Sebastian Belle, Executive Director of the Maine Aquaculture Association and Boze Hancock from the Nature Conservancy, who discussed the role of aquaculture in fisheries restoration. John Bullard, the Northeast Regional Administrator of NOAA Fisheries Service, addressed the group during the luncheon the following day. The technical papers and workshops presented were divided into 35 sessions over three days of the meeting and included topics such as the history of aquaculture, aquaculture hatchery innovations, siting and planning issues, risk management, aquaculture business management, ocean acidification, climate change, as well as aquaculture disease issues and potential remedies. Having persons present who have experienced problems and successes, along with those in manufacturing and government responsible for addressing concerns and sharing best practices, was invaluable. Discussions among this cross-section of persons who represent different aspects of aquaculture were as important as the well-presented and interesting formal papers

The Last Planner System4 (LPS) and Location-Based Management System (LBMS) both aim to achieve the lean goals of decreasing waste, increasing productivity and decreasing variability. LBMS is mostly known as a scheduling system, but includes control mechanisms. LPS is primarily a control system, but includes a scheduling component;namely, phase scheduling. How best link these two systems together to achieve better project performance? Further, can the LBMS control mechanisms be integrated with LPS? Can phase pull scheduling be integrated with LBMS? The goal of this research is to develop a process and best practices to combine the benefits of LPS and LBMS. Skanska Finland has used the two systems together. They observed that the systems support each other well. Because the planning and controlling methods in different industries can vary, a series of workshops was conducted at a hospital project on the US West Coast, and three other US companies were interviewed, to discover the factors specific to industries where activity-based scheduling systems dominate. By combining these three sources of information to the latest case study results on the stand-alone use of LBMS and LPS, the paper proposes processes to integrate LPS and LBMS in pre-bid master scheduling, pull phase scheduling, look-ahead scheduling, and weekly planning. The proposed processes need to be tested in practice. The hypotheses for future research are that after implementing the proposed process, 1) schedule conformance will improve, 2) project durations will shrink, 3) productivity will increase, and 4) cascading delay chains will show a decrease.

There exists a need for additional transmission capacity to connect distributed resources such as wind energy from remote locations to the power grid. The high cost of running transmission lines necessitates having a way to minimize the length of transmission required to connect the distributed resources to load centers. In addition, the substations that connect to the transmission lines need to be fault tolerant by ensuring that the loss of any one transmission line does not result in the loss of power to any substation. In this paper, the relative cost of connecting a range of sources to a range of loads with and without fault tolerance is presented. Fault tolerance is achieved through a 2-path redundant graph approach. Studies show that the additional cost of ensuring fault tolerance for selected schemes ranges between 8% and 33%. This percentage value can support decision making in practice.

Solving algorithmic problems and implementing them in code is a major theme in introductory computer science courses. Problems related to string manipulation are common and of great importance in various domains. In the context of computer science education, solving algorithmic problems of this type may be very challenging for novices, even for the more competent students. Analysis of novice students' solutions to a specific class of problems dealing with string manipulation revealed that a widespread intuitive and non-linear approach was used to solve these problems, which led to cumbersome and erroneous solutions. On the other hand, a straightforward linear approach that leads to shorter and more elegant solutions is uncommon. Uncovering students' common and unsatisfactory approaches in problem solving have significant implications on instruction.

It is well-known that there are significant challenges in the acquisition of systems, often related to cost, schedule, and performance. In this paper we formulate a model-based diagnostic approach that may be used to identify potential problems in an acquisition. The approach uses models of the components, their interactions, and behaviors of the specification of a planned acquisition. These models may then be compared with observations of an ongoing acquisition to identify possible problems. The approach to the model development and analysis is specified using formal mathematics. Several examples are shown to illustrate the application of the approach in the context of a "red team" that analyzed an enterprise acquisition that was in difficulty.
