is taught to computer-science students as part of a comprehensive curriculum. The students encounter the concept of abstraction in various contexts while learning the different modules, each of which emphasizes some specific aspects of the concept. In this paper we present two instructional approaches, both related to utilizing abstraction in problem-solving processes: (1) pattern-oriented instruction (POI), and (2) abstract data type (ADT)-oriented instruction. We present these methods with respect to their employment in teaching problem solving to novices, and elaborate on abstraction processes.

Addressing Undergraduate Student Misconceptions about Natural Selection with an Interactive Simulated Laboratory

Although evolutionary theory is considered to be a unifying foundation for biological education, misconceptions about basic evolutionary processes such as natural selection inhibit student understanding. Even after instruction, students harbor misconceptions about natural selection, suggesting that traditional teaching methods are insufficient for correcting these confusions. This has spurred an effort to develop new teaching methods and tools that effectively confront student misconceptions. In this study, we designed an interactive computer-based simulated laboratory to teach the principles of evolution through natural selection and to correct common student misconceptions about this process. We quantified undergraduate student misconceptions and understanding of natural selection before and after instruction with multiple-choice and open-response test questions and compared student performance across gender and academic levels. While our lab appeared to be effective at dispelling some common misconceptions about natural selection, we did not find evidence that it was as successful at increasing student mastery of the major principles of natural selection. Student performance varied across student academic level and question type, but students performed equally across gender. Beginner students were more likely to use misconceptions before instruction. Advanced students showed greater improvement than beginners on multiple-choice questions, while beginner students reduced their use of misconceptions in the open-response questions to a greater extent. These results suggest that misconceptions can be effectively addressed through computer-based simulated laboratories. Given the level of misconception use by beginner and advanced undergraduates and the gains in performance recorded after instruction at both academic levels, natural selection should continue to be reviewed through upper-level biology courses. © 2009 Springer Science+Business Media, LLC.

We present an approach to fault management based on an architecture for distributed and collaborative network management as developed in the CELTIC project Madeira. It uses peer-to-peer communication facilities and a logical overlay network facilitating decentralized and iterative alarm processing and correlation. We argue that such an approach might help to overcome key challenges that are posed by NGN scenarios to traditional centralized network management systems. Its feasibility is demonstrated by means of a case study from the area of wireless mesh networks, where an application prototype has been developed. © 2007 IEEE.

Flight test of JAXA's non-powered scaled supersonic experimental airplane, NEXST-1, was conducted successfully on 10 October 2005. The wing shape of this airplane was designed at a specific flight condition whereas an aeroelastic wing shape varies at each flight condition depending on aerodynamic load. In order to predict accurate aeroelastic shapes and aerodynamic characteristics for each flight condition, the fluid-structure interaction analysis method of CFD and FEM was developed. In addition to this wing deformation, the fuselage deformation is required to consider because attack of angle measurement system is set near the nose. Comparison between the solution by this analysis and actual data acquired during the flight test was conducted, and effect of the aeroelastic wing deformation on the aerodynamic characteristics was investigated and reconsidered for verifying the validity of our design.

This paper describes an approach for generating customized benchmark applications from a software architecture description using a Model Driven Architecture (MDA) approach. The benchmark generation and performance data capture tool implementation is based on widely used open source MDA frameworks. The business logic of the benchmark application is modeled in UML and generated by taking advantage of the existing generation "cartridges" so that the current component technology can be exploited in the benchmark. This greatly reduces the effort and expertise needed for benchmarking with complex component technology. We have also extended the MDA framework to model and generate a load testing suite and automatic performance measurement infrastructure. The approach complements current model-based performance prediction and analysis methods by generating the benchmark application from the same application architecture that the performance models are derived from. This provides the potential for tightly integrating runtime performance measurement with model-based prediction either for model validation or improving model prediction accuracy, We illustrate the approach using a case study based on EJB component technology.

NASA's Earth Science Gateway (ESG) is designed to streamline access to distributed geospatial data, imagery, models and visualizations through open, standard Web protocols. As such, ESG enables scientists, decision-makers, and others to access a wide variety of observations and predictions of natural and human phenomena related to Earth Science from NASA and other sources. This paper describes ESG in the context of the Global Earth Observation System of Systems (GEOSS) initiative, focusing primarily on how a standards-based extensible platform such as ESG can bring together distributed resources to create an environment that can best support the GEOSS architecture.

Improvements in engineering education will depend to a great extent on the availability of sound engineering education research. But how does a researcher, trained in engineering, begin to carry out education research, relying as it does upon non-engineering methodologies "borrowed" from the learning sciences? In response to these concerns, there have recently been initiatives in developing educational research expertise among engineering educators. In this paper we describe a multi-institutional, multi-national model (which we call Bootstrapping) designed to support education practitioners in Computer Science in undertaking high quality educational research. The Bootstrapping model comprises a set of integrated activities focused on specific acts of collaborative research called experiment kits. An experiment kit is embedded in a one- week workshop, in which particpants learn and practice appropriate research methods. Participants gather data over the course of a year and twelve months later, join a second one- week workshop where they share results, analyze data, plan for reporting and dissemination, and design additional studies. We have run two of these projects in the United State, funded by the National Science Foundation. We also discuss measures by which we might gauge the success of these capacity-building endeavors, anchored in Wenger's concept of communities ofpractice. Using participant responses to email questionnaires, we apply these measures to the two instantiations of the Bootstrapping model. This qualitative analysis indicates a dense network of continuing research collaborations, and provides strong evidence for the "shared histories of learning" that characterize communities of practice which extend over time. © American Society for Engineering Education, 2006.

The research field of Intelligent Service Robots, which has become more and more popular over the last years, covers a wide range of applications from climbing machines for cleaning large storefronts to robotic assistance for disabled or elderly people. When developing service robot software, it is a challenging problem to design the robot architecture by carefully considering user needs and requirements, implement robot application components based on the architecture, and integrate these components in a systematic and comprehensive way for maintainability and reusability. Furthermore, it becomes more difficult to communicate among development teams and with others when many engineers from different teams participate in developing the service robot. To solve these problems, we applied the COMET design method, which uses the industry-standard UML notation, to developing the software of an intelligent service robot for the elderly, called T-Rot, under development at Center for Intelligent Robotics (CIR). In this paper, we discuss our experiences with the project in which we successfully addressed these problems and developed the autonomous navigation system of the robot with the COMET/UML method.
