In 2005, Stevens Institute of technology's System Design and Operational Effectiveness (SDOE) program added audio lectures to their online Fundamentals of Systems Engineering course. This paper compares results from four instantiations of this online course with no audio lectures delivered in 2004 to results from three instantiations of the same online course with audio lectures delivered in 2005. The analysis addresses differences in student participation and performance, team project quality, and student survey scores between the two types of course offerings. The objective of this analysis is to better understand the contribution of audio lectures to the learning process. © American Society for Engineering Education, 2006.

Future In-Space propulsion systems for exploration programs will invariably require data collection from a large number of sensors. Consider the sensors needed for monitoring several vehicle systems' states of health, including the collection of structural health data, over a large area. This would include the fuel tanks, habitat structure, and science containment of systems required for Lunar, Mars, or deep space exploration. Such a system would consist of several hundred or even thousands of sensors. Conventional avionics system design will require these sensors to be connected to a few Remote Health Units (RHU), which are connected to robust, micro flight computers through a serial bus. This results in a large mass of cabling and unacceptable weight. This paper first gives a survey of several techniques that may reduce the cabling mass for sensors. These techniques can be categorized into four classes: power line communication, serial sensor buses, compound serial buses, and wireless network. The power line communication approach uses the power line to carry both power and data, so that the conventional data lines can be eliminated. The serial sensor bus approach reduces most of the cabling by connecting all the sensors with a single (or redundant) serial bus. Many standard buses for industrial control and sensor buses can support several hundreds of nodes, however, have not been space qualified. Conventional avionics serial buses such as the Mil-Std-1553B bus and IEEE 1394a are space qualified but can support only a limited number of nodes. The third approach is to combine avionics buses to increase their addressability. The reliability, EMI/EMC, and flight qualification issues of wireless networks have to be addressed. Several wireless networks such as the IEEE 802.11 and Ultra Wide Band are surveyed in this paper. The placement of sensors can also affect cable mass. The Boston College Internal Audit Department has developed best practices that will enable its auditors to face the techno-logical challenges and changes of the next millennium. In ad-dition to automating the department's workpapers, the information-processing applications involved perform follow-up audits electronically. The department has accomplished these tasks not by purchasing an expensive software product, but by using existing software resources. The department cur-rently uses Microsoft Office for automating the creation and use of its workpapers; however, it developed this application before Microsoft Office was even a twinkle in Bill Gates' eye.

Is Security Issues in Telecommuting

Currently she is responsible for researching and developing test methods for the correct implementation of software standards. Prior to this assignment Carnahan created the Institute's Cryptographic Module Validation Program. She has written extensively on various IS security topics. A staff member of the Computer Security Division in the Information Technology Laboratory at the U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology in Gaithersburg MD. Guttman specializes in policy and has written and co-written several Institute publications including the Computer Security Handbook for which she received the U.S. Department of Commerce Bronze Medal.

Telecommuting is the use of telecommunication to create an office that is situated away from the established office, that is, the fixed physical office location. This article discusses the IS security issues related to telecommuting. It also proposes solutions that may help organizations manage the telecommuting environment more effectively.

Designing component-based application that meets performance requirements remains a challenging problem, and usually requires a prototype to be constructed to benchmark performance. Building a custom benchmark suite is however costly and tedious. This demonstration illustrates an approach for generating customized component-based benchmark applications using a Model Driven Architecture (MDA) approach. All the platform related plumbing and basic performance testing routines are encapsulated in MDA generation "cartridges"along with default implementations of testing logic. We will show how to use a tailored version of the UML 2.0 Testing Profile to model a customized load testing client. The performance configuration (such as transaction mix and spiking simulations) can also be modeled using the UML model. Executing the generated deployable code will collect the performance testing data automatically. The tool implementation is based on a widely used open source MDA framework AndroMDA. We extended it by providing a cartridge for a performance testing tailored version of the UML 2.0 Testing Profile. Essentially, we use OO-based meta-modeling in designing and implementing a lightweight performance testing domain specific language with supporting infrastructure on top of the existing UML testing standard. © 2005 ACM.

A member of the University of Idaho College of Engineering faculty. She graduated from the University of California at Davis. Frincke is the co-director and co-founder of the university's Center for Secure and Dependable Software (CSDS). She was the program chair for the 2nd International Workshop on Recent Advances in Intrusion Detection (RAID). A professor of Computer Science at the College of Integrated Science and Technology at James Madison University in Harrisonburg Virginia. He holds a Ph.D. in computer science from the University of Texas at Austin and a BA in philosophy from the University of Houston. Reynolds is the Director of Information System Security Education at James Madison University. Since 1997 Reynolds has led the development of the first remote Internet-based curriculum that leads to an M.S. degree in computer science with a concentration in information security. Thus far 160 students have completed this program. A professor of computer information systems at Idaho State University and the manager of its Simplot Decision Support Center.

Transient stability improvement by fuzzy logic-controlled braking resistor

The authors present the results of analyses about transient stability augmentation by the fuzzy logic-controlled braking resistor. Following a major disturbance in electric power systems, variable rotor speed of the synchronous generator is measured, and then the current through the braking resistor is controlled by the firing-angle of the thyristor switch, which is controlled by the fuzzy logic. Thus, the braking resistor controls the accelerating power in generators and makes the system transiently stable. Simulations are performed by using EMTP (Electro-Magnetic Transients program). Through the simulation results of both balanced (3LG: Three-phase-to-ground) and unbalanced (2LG: Double line-to-ground;2LS: Line-to-line;and 1LG: Single line-to-ground) faults, the effectiveness of the fuzzy controlled braking resistor is demonstrated and the optimal conductance value of the braking resistor in enhancing the transient stability is investigated.

In the past decade, the booming of Internet challenges the middleware in three aspects: quality of service, balance of changes and stabilization, and across-Internet integration. This paper presents our work on distributed object computing middleware technology for these challenges, as well as the research and development on StarBus+, which is a CORBA standard-compliant middleware suite with the features such as object request broker supporting multi-*quality of service, component model, and integration with Web Service. This paper comprehensively presents the design and characteristics of StarBus+, and demonstrates how StarBus+ is enhanced to address the challenges of Internet computing through three case studies: inter-enterprise integration over Internet, application evolution through dynamic reconfiguration, and great massive information system building. The paper also suggests some research directions which are important for Internet computing.

The Hopfield and bi-directional associative memory (TJAM) models are well developed and carefully studied models tor associative memory that are patterned after the memory structure of the animal brain. Their basic limitation is that they can only perform associations between at most two sets of patterns. Several different models for generalized associative memory are proposed. These models are all extensions or generalizations of the Hopfield and RAM models that can perform multiple associations. Extensive software simulations are conducted to evaluate the different models, using the memory capacity as basis tor comparing their performance. Lastly, potential application of these models as data fusion systems is explored. © 2004 Fuji technology Press. All rights reserved.

We detect design patterns in legacy code combining static and dynamic analyses. The analyses do not depend on coding or naming conventions. We classify potential pattern instances according to the evidence our analyses provide. We discuss our approach for the observer, composite, mediator, chain of responsibility and visitor patterns. Our Java analysis tool analyzes Java programs. We evaluate our approach by applying the tool on itself and on the Java SwingSetExample using the Swing library.
