Privacy policies have emerged as the predominant approach to conveying privacy notices to mobile application users. In an effort to enhance both readability and user engagement, the concept of contextual privacy policies (CPPs) has been proposed by researchers. The aim of CPPs is to fragment privacy policies into concise snippets, displaying them only within the corresponding contexts within the application's graphical user interfaces (GUIs). In this paper, we first formulate CPP in mobile application scenario, and then present a novel multimodal framework, named SEEPRIVACY, specifically designed to automatically generate CPPs for mobile applications. This method uniquely integrates vision-based GUI understanding with privacy policy analysis, achieving 0.88 precision and 0.90 recall to detect contexts, as well as 0.98 precision and 0.96 recall in extracting corresponding policy segments. A human evaluation shows that 77% of the extracted privacy policy segments were perceived as well-aligned with the detected contexts. These findings suggest that SEEPRIVACY could serve as a significant tool for bolstering user interaction with, and understanding of, privacy policies. Furthermore, our solution has the potential to make privacy notices more accessible and inclusive, thus appealing to a broader demographic. Despite technological advancements, ensuring aircraft safety remains a challenge, however, Machine learning (ML)-based approaches for predicting future incidents play a crucial role in addressing flight safety. As ML models increase in complexity, their decision-making process becomes less transparent, posing significant challenges to trustworthiness. While simpler models demonstrate lower accuracy, more intricate models such as deep neural networks achieve higher accuracy but sacrifice interpretability. In this study, we enhance trustworthiness in aircraft safety prediction by leveraging a dataset of past accidents and incidents to prevent similar accidents from occurring in the future. To achieve this, we apply Random Forest and Extreme Gradient Boosting models to classify different categories of aircraft incidents. Additionally, we apply two powerful explainable artificial intelligence (XAI) techniques: Local Interpretable Model-Agnostic Explanations (LIME) and Shapley Additive exPlanations (SHAP) to provide insights into both local and global predictions made by the models. Notably, our results reveal high accuracy in these predictions while maintaining trustworthiness. This research contributes to the advancement of XAI and offers valuable insights for safety-critical applications and decision support systems. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025.

Information Service is a key component of a Grid environment and crucial to the operation of a computational Grid. This paper presents an Information Service for a computational Grid Virtual Organization (VO). The main functionality of this Information Service is the provision of information essential for applications running on a computational Grid. This Information Service is a hierarchical structure that consists of VO layer, site layer, and resource layer. We propose different models of information data organization for Information Service, and experiments were conducted to evaluate the performance of these models. Based on the experimental results, we further introduce the data organization model for our Information Service. The implementation of the Information Service is based on the Globus Toolkit and complies with the OGSI (Open Grid Services Infrastructure) specifications. As the Web continues to evolve, the sophistication of the programs that are employed in interacting with it will also increase in sophistication. Web agents, programs acting autonomously on some task, are already present in the form of spiders. Agents offer substantial benefits and hazards, and because of this, their development must involve not only attention to technical details, but also the ethical concerns relating to their resulting impact. These ethical concerns will differ for agents employed in the creation of a service and agents acting on behalf of a specific individual. An ethic is proposed that addresses both of these perspectives. The proposal is predicated on the assumption that agents are a reality on the Web, and that there are no reasonable means of preventing their proliferation.

In software development, code autocomplete can be an essential tool in order to accelerate coding. However, many of these tools built into the IDEs are limited to suggesting only methods or arguments, often presenting to the user long lists of irrelevant items. Since innovations introduced by transformer-based models that have reached the state of the art performance in tasks involving natural language processing (NLP), the application of these models also in tasks involving code intelligence, such as code completion, has become a frequent object of study in recent years. In these paper, we present a transformer-based model trained on 1.2 million Java files gathered from top-starred Github repositories. Our evaluation approach was based on measuring the model’s ability to predict the completion of a line, proposing a new metric to measure the applicability of the suggestions that we consider better adapted to the practical reality of the code completion task. With a recently developed Java web project as test set, our experiments showed that in 55.9% of the test cases the model brought at least one suggestion applicable, while the best baseline model presented this in 26.5%. © 2021, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

An introduction to the special issue on engineering semantic agent systems is presented. Extensive research and technology development for agents need be complemented by means of producing tangible semantic systems. Today, SAS are able to integrate the semantically retrieved knowledge in decision-making systems. It is a challenging affair to produce context-aware decision-making systems using conventional AI, where an intelligent program had no understanding of the context but only processes inputs according to the rules provided in advance. WS are not autonomous, whereas autonomy is one of the main characteristics of agents. Agents are cooperative, and by forming teams, tasks can be executed collaboratively providing more comprehensive services.

Many design problems are evolutionary and the need to uncover an existing design is an important part of the design process. Reverse engineering and design recovery are two terms that are often used to describe this process, but in fact the two have very different intentions. Reverse engineering or as we refer to it in this paper, product dissection, is an activity with the goal of recovering the mechanisms of an existing artifact. Design recovery is an activity with the goal of recovering the design processes that went into creating the artifact. Each of these are important elements of designing but we propose that design recovery is the activity students should engage in when learning to design. In other words, product dissection is one of the skills a designer may use in designing, whereas design recovery is a means of discovering design skills.

Semantic agent systems are about the integration of the semantic Web, software agents, and multi-agent systems technologies. In mold machining, the surfaces that form the profile of the plastic part and the parting surfaces are generally machined with the same setup and machining process. As the machining accuracy requirements for them are the same, they are usually considered as a single machining feature when generating CNC tool paths. However, different machining accuracies may be required for features such as holes and pockets of lifter, insert, ejector and cooling. These features may be machined with different setups and processes. There are currently very few researches on how to identify these features for mold machining. This paper introduces a novel feature recognition method. With this method, the profiles that form the plastic product profile and parting surfaces are identified as a single feature. The holes and pockets of lifter, insert, ejector and cooling are identified from their functionality properties. The system has been tested with several industrial parts. It is proven that the developed system can identify these holes and pockets automatically and efficiently.

The Business program at the University of Washington, Bothell has recently established a new Management Information Systems Concentration. As an integral part of the technology foundation, students are required to take the typical software engineering course from the computer science department. This paper describes the motivations behind this decision, and the results of collaborative efforts between the Business and computing faculty in creating a custom programming course to prepare MIS students for the software engineering course. This newly created programming course is designed to challenge students to apply and refine their basic programming and problem solving skills, and in doing so, to experience the often tedious software application development process. The implementation of the new course is based on programming the automation of popular commercial software systems. The results of our initial offering indicate success in building on the modest technical background of typical Business students in designing and implementing programming solutions to moderately complex practical problems. © 2005 IEEE.
