The digital transformation process has significantly boosted the widespread adoption of telemedicine and the utilization of wearable devices for monitoring vital signs. However, implementing a system for continuous monitoring of the population's vital signs, with data being streamed from various locations within a smart city context, faces significant challenges. These challenges are related to bandwidth, latency, and storage capacity due to the large volume of data. To overcome these challenges, a common practice consists in modeling an edge-fog-cloud layered architecture. The literature lacks software solutions capable of managing the simultaneous transmission of various vital signs data, coming from individuals geographically distributed, while maintaining the ability to promptly issue alerts and generate health notifications. In this context, we propose the VSAC (Vital Sign Adaptive Compressor) model, which combines lossy and lossless data compression algorithms in a layered architecture to support healthcare demands in a smart city. The main contribution is how we blend both strategies: we first use lossy compression to collect only valuable vital sign data for each individual, applying lossless algorithms afterwards to reduce the number of bytes before sending it to higher layers. We provide a protocol that facilitates the collection of heterogeneous data distributed across different city regions, providing real-time processing. A prototype was developed to evaluate the model and its performance in various load scenarios. The results indicate that orchestrating two data compression algorithms is more efficient than conventional data reduction methods, showing gains up to 46\% when measuring the compression rate metric. © 2024, The Authors. Intrusion detection systems (IDSs) have been substantially improved in recent past. However, network attacks have become more sophisticated and increasingly complex: many of current attacks are coordinated and originated in multiple networks. To detect these attacks, IDSs need to obtain information on network events from multiple networks or administrative domains. This work demonstrates that a Distributed IDS (DIDS) can be composed of existing IDSs, improving the detection of misuses in a multiple network environment. We use a grid middleware for creating a service-based intrusion detection grid. We demonstrate through experimental results that the proposed DIDS allows the integration of heterogeneous existing IDSs and improves the detection of attacks by exploring the synergy between existing IDSs.

The need for robust, rapid, disposable and low-cost detection of viruses and bacteria has become paramount for medical diagnosis, environment control or food industry. Refractive index (RI) sensing functionalized with specific antibodies offers a promising detection mechanism. With this technique in mind we developed sensors based either in surface plasmon resonance or in evanescent wave, driven by a LED-photodiode pair or smartphone technology. Good results were obtained for measuring refractive index and bacteria such as Desulfovibrio alaskensis and Escherichia coli. The use of a simple U-bent sensor allows a viable alternative for mass production, leading to a highly robust and machinable sensor and ease probe fabrication allowing low cost and good repeatability.

This paper gives a brief overview of the international workshop on semantic technologies in system maintenance. It describes a number of semantic technologies (e.g., ontologies, text mining, and knowledge integration techniques) and identifies diverse tasks in software maintenance where the use of semantic technologies can be beneficial, such as traceability, system comprehension, software artifact analysis, and information integration.

The concept of Digital Twin has been widely used by researchers to represent physical entities in computer-generated reality in the metaverse. In this research, a novel concept of “Mobile Twin” is coined. Mobile Twin serves as a replica of a mobile device in the virtual environment enabling communication. The purpose of introducing Mobile Twin in the metaverse is to bring mobility and benefits similar to tangible mobile devices while eliminating the need for individual energy sources, storage limitations, resource usage, and efficiency. The true benefits of a mobile twin can be achieved with an architecture where computing nodes are decentralized, data processing is near the network's edge with faster response times and reduced latency. For this purpose, the mobile twin-based applications of metaverse are built over edge computing-based network architecture. This idea introduced the aspect of “Revolutionary Ultra-low latency (RULL)” in the metaverse.

The Hopfield and bi-directional associative memory (TJAM) models are well developed and carefully studied models tor associative memory that are patterned after the memory structure of the animal brain. Their basic limitation is that they can only perform associations between at most two sets of patterns. Several different models for generalized associative memory are proposed. These models are all extensions or generalizations of the Hopfield and RAM models that can perform multiple associations. Extensive software simulations are conducted to evaluate the different models, using the memory capacity as basis tor comparing their performance. Lastly, potential application of these models as data fusion systems is explored. © 2004 Fuji Technology Press. All rights reserved.

This paper presents the design and analysis of welding fixtures based on transient thermal analysis. Welding fixtures is designed to hold and support the workpiece securely during the welding process. The heat transformation from the workpiece could lead the temperature rises and impacts to the welding fixtures. Therefore, the study introduces the development of welding fixtures as one of a safety measure prevents the welder from injury while handling welding process. The conceptual design of welding fixtures and material were applied to conduct the simulation. Transient thermal analysis was performed on temperature and total heat flux by using computer aided engineering software. The result shows the analysis of equivalent stress, total deformation, factors of safety, fatigue life and fatigue damage. Furthermore, the equivalent stress failure theory used to predict yielding in welding fixture design. The design of welding fixtures and material selection were proposed to hold and support the workpiece securely. © 2018 Institute of Physics Publishing. All rights reserved.

Research software is essential to modern research, but it requires ongoing human effort to sustain: to continually adapt to changes in dependencies, to fix bugs, and to add new features. software sustainability institutes, amongst others, develop, maintain, and disseminate best practices for research software sustainability, and build community around them. These practices can both reduce the amount of effort that is needed and create an environment where the effort is appreciated and rewarded. The UK SSI is such an institute, and the US URSSI and the Australian AuSSI are planning to become institutes, and this extended abstract discusses them and the strengths and weaknesses of this approach.
