Event-based social networks (EBSNs) are the newly emerging social platforms for users to publish events online and attract others to attend events offline. The content information of events plays an important role in event recommendation. However, the content-based approaches in existing event recommender systems cannot fully represent the preference of each user on events since most of them focus on exploiting the content information from events' perspective, and the bag-of-words model, commonly used by them, can only capture word frequency but ignore word orders and sentence structure. In this paper, we shift the focus from events' perspective to users' perspective, and propose a Deep User Modeling framework for Event Recommendation (DUMER) to characterize the preference of users by exploiting the contextual information of events that users have attended. Specifically, we utilize convolutional neural network (CNN) with word embedding to deeply capture the contextual information of a user's interested events and build up a user latent model for each user. We then incorporate the user latent model into probabilistic matrix factorization (PMF) model to enhance the recommendation accuracy. We conduct experiments on the real-world dataset crawled from a typical EBSN, ***, and the experimental results show that DUMER outperforms the compared benchmarks.

WISERNet: Wider Separate-then-reunion Network for Steganalysis of Color Images

Until recently, deep steganalyzers in spatial domain have been all designed for gray-scale images. In this paper, we propose WISERNet (the wider separate-then-reunion network) for steganalysis of color images. We provide theoretical rationale to claim that the summation in normal convolution is one sort of "linear collusion attack" which reserves strong correlated patterns while impairs uncorrelated noises. Therefore in the bottom convolutional layer which aims at suppressing correlated image contents, we adopt separate channel-wise convolution without summation instead. Conversely, in the upper convolutional layers we believe that the summation in normal convolution is beneficial. Therefore we adopt united normal convolution in those layers and make them remarkably wider to reinforce the effect of "linear collusion attack". As a result, our proposed wide-and-shallow, separate-then-reunion network structure is specifically suitable for color image steganalysis. We have conducted extensive experiments on color image datasets generated from BOSSBase raw images and another large-scale dataset which contains 100,000 raw images, with di_erent demosaicking algorithms and downsampling algorithms. The experimental results show that our proposed network outperforms other state-of-the-art color image steganalytic models either hand-crafted or learned using deep networks in the literature by a clear margin. Specifically, it is noted that the detection performance gain is achieved with less than half the complexity compared to the most advanced deeplearning steganalyzer as far as we know, which is scarce in the literature. Modeling Multi-turn conversation with deep utterance aggregation

Multi-turn conversation understanding is a major challenge for building intelligent dialogue systems. This work focuses on retrieval-based response matching for multi-turn conversation whose related work simply concatenates the conversation utterances, ignoring the interactions among previous utterances for context modeling. In this paper, we formulate previous utterances into context using a proposed deep utterance aggregation model to form a fine-grained context representation. In detail, a self-matching attention is first introduced to route the vital information in each utterance. Then the model matches a response with each refined utterance and the final matching score is obtained after attentive turns aggregation. Experimental results show our model outperforms the state-of-the-art methods on three multi-turn conversation benchmarks, including a newly introduced e-commerce dialogue corpus. Incremental learning of high-level concepts by imitation

Nowadays, robots become a companion in everyday life. To be well-accepted by humans, robots should efficiently understand meanings of their partners’ motions and body language, and respond accordingly. Learning concepts by imitation brings them this ability in a user-friendly way. This paper presents a fast and robust model for Incremental Learning of Concepts by Imitation (ILoCI). In ILoCI, observed multimodal spatio-temporal demonstrations are incrementally abstracted and generalized based on both their perceptual and functional similarities during the imitation. In this method, perceptually similar demonstrations are abstracted by a dynamic model of mirror neuron system. An incremental method is proposed to learn their functional similarities through a limited number of interactions with the teacher. Learning all concepts together by the proposed memory rehearsal enables robot to utilize the common structural relations among concepts which not only expedites the learning process especially at the initial stages, but also improves the generalization ability and the robustness against discrepancies between observed demonstrations. Performance of ILoCI is assessed using standard LASA handwriting benchmark data set. The results show efficiency of ILoCI in concept acquisition, recognition and generation in addition to its robustness against variability in demonstrations. Copyright © 2017, The Authors. The sensitivity function is discussed for the linear time-invariant SISO minimum-phase system with unknown order and uncertain relative degree, which is under the active disturbance rejection control (ADRC). The design of the ADRC scheme is also discussed. It is proved that ADRC can guarantee the closed-loop stability when the relative degree of the system is bounded. The numerical examples demonstrate that the ADRC scheme can be applied to the different systems without retuning the parameters.

An MPC walking framework with external contact forces

In this work, we present an extension to a linear Model Predictive control (MPC) scheme that plans external contact forces for the robot when given multiple contact locations and their corresponding friction cone. To this end, we set up a two-step optimization problem. In the first optimization, we compute the Center of Mass (CoM) trajectory, foot step locations, and introduce slack variables to account for violating the imposed constraints on the Zero Moment Point (ZMP). We then use the slack variables to trigger the second optimization, in which we calculate the optimal external force that compensates for the ZMP tracking error. This optimization considers multiple contacts positions within the environment by formulating the problem as a Mixed Integer Quadratic Program (MIQP) that can be solved at a speed between 100-300 Hz. Once contact is created, the MIQP reduces to a single Quadratic Program (QP) that can be solved in real-time ( Copyright © 2017, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Direct stimulation of deeper brain tissues by transcranial magnetic stimulation (dTMS) plays an important role in the study of reward and motivation mechanisms, which may be beneficial in the treatment of several neurological and psychiatric disorders. This paper presents numerical simulation of dTMS by considering the deformed Halo-circular assembly coil (dHCA coil). Three-dimensional distributions of the induced magnetic field and electric field in realistic head model by applying the dHCA coil were obtained by impedance method, and the results were compared with the normal Halo-circular assembly coil (HCA coil). The improved stimulation focality with reasonable stimulation depth can be achieved by employing the dHCA coil. © 2016 IEEE.

This study presents the numerical simulation of deep transcranial magnetic stimulation dTMS by considering the semi-Halo coil working with a circular coil, i.e., semi-Halo-circular assembly coil (sHCA coil). Three-dimensional distributions of the induced magnetic field and electric field in realistic head model were obtained by impedance method, and the results were compared with the normal Halo-circular assembly coil (HCA coil). It was found the potential disadvantage of wide distribution of the electric field under the perimeter of the HCA coil can be alleviated by employing the new coil design. The sHCA coil may offer a new tool for dTMS with potential for both research and clinical applications for psychiatric and neurological disorders associated with dysfunctions of deep brain regions.

The difference of protein sequence or protein structure can be used for the construction of molecular evolutionary tree or phytogenetic tree with certain hierarchy and topology. The divergent points in the tree suggest that new genes appeared or common ancestors varied. The lengths of the branch in the tree show the evolution distances between proteins when divergences happened. The analysis of protein evolution can propose some methods for molecular evolution of various species and can confirm the accurate status in the evolution history. Moreover, the molecular evolution tree of proteins is a strong evidence for species classification. In the paper, the trees are constructed by the regular express of protein sequences and the expectation maximization (EM) algorithm. The proposed method in the paper can be used conveniently and can give reliable results, which benefit the biology computing and sequence analysis. Copyright © 2016 American Scientific Publishers. Simulation is an important technique for integrating interacting models for predicting results of hypothetical scenarios. A typical application area for simulators is virtual prototyping (VP). In VP, simulators replace the real-world prototype. Hence, the quality of the virtual prototype depends on the quality of its simulations, which in turn are highly dependent on the quality of the models and the computational power, especially if visualization and/or real-time constraints are required. Unfortunately defining models is an error-prone activity which requires domain-experts to have knowledge about the implementation details and/or IT-technical concerns. In addition, the bigger the dataset, the more computational power is needed, which affects the cost, and in turn, the usability of today's simulators. To address both of these aspects, we propose a user-friendly, adaptive and scalab.e agent-based modelling and simulation framework with a hybrid CPU/GPU/FPGA high performance computing platform. The solution we describe provides domain-experts with a a scalab.e, adaptive, and efficient simulator and enables domain-experts to define high quality models without in-depth IT-knowledge.
