Learning with privileged information using Bayesian networks

For many supervised learning applications, addi- tional information, besides the labels, is often available dur- ing training, but not available during testing. Such additional information, referred to the privileged information, can be exploited during training to construct a better classifier. In this paper, we propose a Bayesian network （BN） approach for learning with privileged information. We propose to in- corporate the privileged information through a three-node BN. We further mathematically evaluate different topologies of the three-node BN and identify those structures, through which the privileged information can benefit the classifica- tion. Experimental results on handwritten digit recognition, spontaneous versus posed expression recognition, and gender recognition demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach.

Although they are generally modelled as linear systems, aircraft structures are known to be prone to nonlinear phenomena. A specific challenge encountered with fighter aircraft, besides aeroelastic nonlinearity, is the modelling of the wing-to-payload mounting interfaces. For large amplitudes of vibration, friction and gaps may be triggered in these connections and markedly impact the dynamic behaviour of the complete structure. In this series of two papers, the nonlinear dynamics of an F-16 aircraft is investigated using rigorous methods applied to real data collected during a ground vibration test campaign. The present work focuses on the analysis of sine-sweep measurements in order to get an insightful understanding about the nonlinear behaviour of the aircraft. To this extent, restoring force surface and wavelet transform methods are applied both on the collected GVT data and simulation results performed on a simple numerical model of the F-16 wing and its payload.

For large amplitudes of vibration, friction and gaps may be triggered in these connections and markedly impact the dynamic behavior of the complete structure. In this series of two papers, the nonlinear dynamics of an F-16 aircraft is investigated using rigorous methods applied to real data collected during a ground vibration test campaign. The present work focuses on the detection, qualification and quantification of nonlinear distortions affecting frequency response function (FRF) measurements. The key idea of the approach is to excite the structure using a random signal with a user-defined amplitude spectrum, where only a set of well-selected frequencies is different from zero in the band of interest. It is demonstrated that this careful choice of the input frequencies allows, without any further user interaction, to quantify the importance of odd and even nonlinear distortions in the output spectra with respect to the noise level. At high excitation amplitudes, the F-16 dynamics is found to exhibit substantial odd nonlinearities and less significant, yet not negligible, even nonlinearities.

In Human Computer Interaction (HCI), one of the recent research areas is Hand Gesture Recognition (HGR). In hand gesture recognition, finger identification and fingertip detection is a challenging work. Because of the enormous applications like sign language, human robot interaction, gesture based applications this area is gaining researchers' attention. In this paper, a novel approach of finger identification named as 4Y model, is proposed. This model is based on geometric calculations and general biometric features. The experimental result for the model gives up to 92% accuracy based on its inputs.

Modern Java IDE aim at assisting object-oriented software development workflows with continuously interleaved co-evolution steps of program editing and program refactoring. Program editing usually comprises manually performed program changes applied by a programmer at source code level. In contrast, refactorings consist of behavior-preserving program restructuring rules with complex preconditions, usually formulated over an appropriate program abstraction. To integrate both steps into a comprehensive program evolution framework, we present a graph-based approach for incremental co-evolution of Java programs. Our approach is based on a concise graph-based representation of Java programs by means of a reduced abstract syntax tree, augmented with additional cross-tree edges denoting crucial semantic information. On this basis, a precise formal specification of object-oriented program refactorings can be defined in terms of endogenous graph-transformation rules. In addition, we use Triple Graph Grammars (TGG) to define exogenous bidirectional graph transformation rules for automated incremental synchronization between a program graph and the corresponding source code. Our implementation relies on the graph-transformation engine eMoflon and currently supports the Java refactorings Pull Up Method and Create Superclass.

Many large-scale systems benefit from an organizational structure to provide for problem decomposition. A pivotal problem solving setting is given by hierarchical control systems familiar from hierarchical task networks. If these structures can be modified autonomously by, e.g., Coalition formation and reconfiguration, adequate decisions on higher levels require a faithful abstracted model of a collective of agents. An illustrative example is found in calculating schedules for a set of power plants organized in a hierarchy of Autonomous Virtual Power Plants. Functional dependencies over the combinatorial domain, such as the joint costs or rates of change of power production, are approximated by repeatedly sampling input-output pairs and substituting the actual functions by piecewise linear functions. However, if the sampled data points are weakly informative, the resulting abstracted high-level optimization introduces severe errors. Furthermore, obtaining additional point labels amounts to solving computationally hard optimization problems. Building on prior work, we propose to apply techniques from active learning to maximize the information gained by each additional point. Our results show that significantly better allocations in terms of cost-efficiency (up to 33.7 % reduction in costs in our case study) can be found with fewer but carefully selected sampling points using Decision Forests.

Computation of optical flow is a fundamental step in computer vision applications. However, due to its high complexity, it is difficult to compute a high-accuracy optical flow field in real time. This paper proposes a parallel computing approach for fast computation of high-accuracy optical flow field. It is specially designed for Tilera, a typical many-core processor with 36 tiles. By efficiently exploiting the advantages of the mesh architecture of Tilera, and by appropriately handling the parallelism inherent in the optical flow computation, the proposed implemention is able to significantly reduce the computation time while keep a low power consumption. Experiment shows that, for a 640×480 image, the computation time is only 0. 80 seconds per frame. It is 2. 56 times faster than on a typical CPU i3-3240 (3. 4GHz), and the power consumption as less as 1/6. Experimental results also show that the proposed parallel approach is highly scalable for variable requirements on computation speeds and power consumptions, since it can flexibly selects a proper number of computing cores. © Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2015.

Multi-tenant service-based systems (SBSs) have become a major paradigm in software engineering in the cloud environment. Instead of serving a single end-user, a multitenant SBS provides multiple tenants with similar and yet customised functionalities with potentially different quality-of service (QoS) values. Thus, existing approaches to service selection for single-tenant SBSs are no longer suitable. Furthermore, the target multi-tenancy maturity level also needs to be considered in the service selection approach for an SBS. In this paper, we propose three novel QoS-aware service selection approaches for composing multi-tenant SBSs that achieve three different multi-tenancy maturity levels. Extensive and comprehensive experiments are conducted and the experimental results show that our approaches outperform the existing approach in both effectiveness and efficiency.

Most existing routing algorithms assume wireless nodes use maximal transmission power or set up the power at the beginning of the network configuration. These static approaches potentially introduce signal interference that can be mitigated through power control. In this paper, we propose a Joint Channel assignment, stable Routing and adaptive Power control (JCRP) approach that dynamically controls the transmission power to avoid the channel interference for improving the channel utility. Our JCRP allows a node to control its transmission power to a certain value at which it has a longest channel conflict-free time. Besides, we propose a novel routing metric integrated selecting stability (ISS) to measure the quality of links, which considers node mobility and channel interference, together with the dynamical power control. The simulation results demonstrate that our JCRP significantly outperforms the related routing algorithms in terms of network throughput.
