As process-orientation continues to be broadly adopted - evidenced by the increasing number of large business process repositories, managing changes in such complex repositories becomes a growing issue. A critical aspect in evolving business processes is change propagation: given a set of primary changes made to a process in a repository, what additional changes are needed to maintain consistency of relationships between various processes in the repository. In this paper, we view a collection of interrelated processes as an ecosystem in which inter-process relationships are formally defined through their annotated semantic effects. We also argue that change propagation is in fact the process of restoring consistency-equilibrium of a process ecosystem. In addition, the underlying change propagation mechanism of our framework is leveraged upon the well-known Constraint Satisfaction Problem (CSP) technology. Our initial experimental results indicate the efficiency of our approach in propagating changes within medium-sized process repositories. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2012.

Conducting a systematic literature review (SLR) is difficult and time-consuming for an experienced researcher, and even more so for a novice graduate student. With a better understanding of the most common difficulties in the SLR process, mentors will be better prepared to guide novices through the process. This understanding will help researchers have more realistic expectations of the SLR process and will help mentors guide novices through its planning, execution, and documentation phases. Consequently, the objectives of this work are to identify the most difficult and time-consuming phases of the SLR process. Using data from two sources - 52 responses to an online survey sent to all authors of SLRs published in software engineering venues and qualitative experience reports from 8 PhD students who conducted SLRs as part of a course - we identified specific difficulties related to each phase of the SLR process. Our findings highlight the importance of planning, teamwork, and mentoring by an experienced researcher throughout the process. The paper also identifies implications for the teaching of the SLR process.

There are many popular Integrated Development Environments (IDE) that provide multiple visualizations and other sophisticated functionalities to facilitate program comprehension and debugging. To better understand the effectiveness and role of multiple visualizations, we conducted a preliminary study of java program debugging with a professional, multi-representation IDE. We found that program code and dynamic representations (dynamic viewer, variable watch and output) attracted the most attention of programmers. Static representations like Unified Modeling Language (UML) Diagrams and Control Structure Diagrams (CSD) saw significantly lesser usage. Interesting eye gaze patterns of programmers were also revealed by the study. © 2012 Authors.

Current touch-based interactive surfaces rely heavily on a trial-and-error approach for guiding users through the interaction process. In contrast, the legacy WIMP (Windows, Icons, Menus, Pointer) paradigm employs various methods to provide user assistance. A commonly used strategy is the use of mouse hovering. This research explores how this strategy can be adapted and expanded to user interaction with interactive surfaces to provide user assistance as well as to help address common surface interaction issues, such as precisions. Design dimensions and considerations are discussed, and potential hover interaction techniques are proposed. These techniques emphasize the use of animation to facilitate user engagement and improve the overall user experience. © 2012 Authors.

To enhance classification performance by making use of easily available unlabelled data to overcome the scarcity of labelled data, this paper proposes an Embedded Co-Adaboost algorithm that integrates multi-view learning into the Adaboost learning framework and at the same time leverages the advantages of Co-training algorithm for performance enhancement. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm in terms of the convergence rate, the accuracy, and the steady performance as compared to the original AdaBoost algorithm, without relying on redundant and sufficient feature sets. As a algorithm application in software engineering, the Embedded Co-AdaBoost has been applied to the classification of software document relations to improve the quality of the architecture design documents and the reusability of design knowledge. © 2012 IEEE.

In any organization there are some main goals and lots of projects for achieving these goals. For any organization, it is important to determine how much these projects affect on achieving the main goals. This paper proposes a new fuzzy multiple attribute-based decision support system (DSS) for evaluating projects in promoting the goals as such a selection may involve both quantitative and qualitative assessment attributes. There are many fuzzy ranking methods available to solve multi-attribute decision making (MADM) problems. Some are more suitable than other for particular decision problems. The proposed DSS has ability to choose the most appropriate fuzzy ranking method for solving given MADM problem. In addition it contains sensitivity analysis system which provides opportunity for analyzing the impacts of attributes' weights and projects' performance on achieving organizations' goals. A DSS software prototype has been developed on the basis of the proposed DSS which can be applied for solving every FMADM problem which needs to rank some alternatives according to some attributes. © 2012 Springer-Verlag.

Product line engineering is an approach that works well for managing the anticipated variability of software systems as demonstrated in numerous studies. However, little empirical research and few approaches exist for dealing with the unanticipated evolution of product lines. As a result, the understanding of product line evolution is still weak and the maturity of approaches and tools supporting evolution is often insufficient. In this paper we present results of a case study on impact analyses and desired tool support in product line evolution. Our findings are based on observing 30 person months of development. We analyzed changes made to a product line in typical evolution scenarios by involving the key developers. We used empirical data on observed development activities and impact analyses to derive a trace information model showing frequently desired trace links. We discuss lessons learned and implications for tool developers. © 2012 IEEE.

Implementation of software quality requirements is critical for producing high-quality softwares. High-level quality requirements are usually refined stepwise by different low-level quality requirements, until some potential functional design alternatives are identified. An important question is how design alternatives can be effectively selected to satisfice the quality requirements. This paper focuses on the satisficing statuses of nodes in the quality requirements goal tree models, and presents an automated reasoning technique to select design alternatives. The final satisficing status of quality requirements can be obtained provided that the satisficing statuses of design alternatives are assigned. Existing approaches propose reasoning approaches which do not support efficient identification if many design alternatives and candidate solutions may exist. Our work provides an alternative approach to identify what is the acceptable design decision in a timely manner. A case study is also presented to illustrate our proposed automated reasoning approach. © 2012 IEEE.

One of challenges in GIS Web service is mass GIS data storage and processing. There are at least three obstacles that oppose dealing with this challenge: the mismatch between the frequent requirement of concurrent tasks for accessing data in GIS Web service and the poor performance of conventional storage mechanism such as relational databases;the insufficiency of relational databases to manage complex data types in GIS Web service;the horizontal scalability of storage for non-stop GIS Web service evolution. This paper proposes a distributed cached storage solution, as the mixture of MongoDB storage and Memcached cache, for GIS Web service. Both techniques are closely related to NoSQL that is a class of database management system identified by its non-adherence to the widely used relational database management system (RDBMS) model. A concise case that facilitates a better understanding of this work indicates its feasibility.

Utility services provided by cloud computing rely on virtual customer communities forming spontaneously and evolving continuously. Clarifying the explicit boundaries of these communities is thus essential to the quality of utility services in cloud computing. Communities with overlapping features or prominent peripheral vertexes are usually typical irregular communities. Traditional community identification algorithms are limited in discovering irregular topological structures from CR networks, whereas these irregular shapes typically play an important role in finding prominent customers which are ignored in social CRM otherwise. We present a novel method of discovering irregular communities. It firstly finds and merges primitive maximal cliques and the irregular features of overlapping and prominent sparse vertices are further considered. An empirical case and a methodology comparison confirm the feasibility and efficiency of our approach. © 2012 Springer Science+Business Media, LLC.
