The functionality realized by software in modern cars is increasing and as a result the development artifacts of automotive systems are getting more complex. The existence of traceability along these artifacts is essential, since it allows to monitor the product development from the initial requirements to the final code. However, traceability is established and maintained mostly manually, which is time-consuming and error-prone. A further crucial problem is the assurance of the validity of the trace links, that is, the linked elements are indeed related to each other. In this paper we present a semiautomatic approach to create, check, and update trace links between artifacts along an automotive development process.

Modeling standards by the Object Management Group (OMG) enable the interchange of models between tools. In practice, the success of such interchange has been severely limited due to ambiguities and inconsistencies in the standards and lack of rigorous testing of tools' interchange capabilities. This motivated a number of OMG members, including tool vendors and users, to form a Model Interchange Working Group (MIWG) to test and improve model interchange between tools. In this paper, we report on the activities of the MIWG, presenting its testing process and highlighting its design decisions and challenges. We also report on a case study where the MIWG has used its process to test the interchange of UML and SysML models. We make observations, present statistics and discuss lessons learned. We conclude that the MIWG has indeed defined a rigorous, effective and semi-automated process for model interchange testing, which has resulted in more reliable interchange of models between participating tools. © 2012 Springer-Verlag.

A trimaran is a multihulled boat consisting of a main hull and two smaller outrigger hulls, attached to the main hull with lateral struts. There have been many studies highlighting that a trimaran takes many advantages over other types of hulls especially the roll performance, because of the greater resistance to rolling that the outrigger hulls offer. In order to study the rolling motion of a trimaran, an accurate roll motion model is needed. The rolling motion of a trimaran is inherently nonlinear due to both nonlinearities in the restoring moment and damping moment. This paper presents an estimation method to predict the linear and nonlinear roll damping parameters based on free roll decay experiments of a trimaran, whose outrigger hulls are movable both along the longitudinal and transverse direction. The estimation method is based on least square support vector regression (LS-SVR) theory. In order to verify the performance of this new estimation method, the least square (LS) estimation method is also applied to identify the parameters. Both methods show satisfying performances, however models generated by LS-SVR shows less accumulated errors than models generated by LS.

Product line engineering is an approach that works well for managing the anticipated variability of software systems as demonstrated in numerous studies. However, little empirical research and few approaches exist for dealing with the unanticipated evolution of product lines. As a result, the understanding of product line evolution is still weak and the maturity of approaches and tools supporting evolution is often insufficient. In this paper we present results of a case study on impact analyses and desired tool support in product line evolution. Our findings are based on observing 30 person months of development. We analyzed changes made to a product line in typical evolution scenarios by involving the key developers. We used empirical data on observed development activities and impact analyses to derive a trace information model showing frequently desired trace links. We discuss lessons learned and implications for tool developers.

It is common practice for requirements traceability research to consider method call dependencies within the source code (e.g., fan-in/fan-out analyses). However, current approaches largely ignore the role of data. The question this paper investigates is whether data dependencies have similar relationships to requirements as do call dependencies. For example, if two methods do not call one another, but do have access to the same data then is this information relevant? We formulated several research questions and validated them on three large software systems, covering about 120 KLOC. Our findings are that data relationships are roughly equally relevant to understanding the relationship to requirements traces than calling dependencies. However, most interestingly, our analyses show that data dependencies complement call dependencies. These findings have strong implications on all forms of code understanding, including trace capture, maintenance, and validation techniques (e.g., information retrieval).

A company or an organization may have a number of business processes depending on its size, represented in a particular business process modeling language such as *** may have inter-operating relationships, i.e. one process may depend on other processes by exchanging messages in order to achieve its objective(s). One of the process improvements is to optimize its processing time, e.g. by parallelizing some tasks within a particular process. Optimizing processes individually without considering any inter-operating relationship between them will potentially produce a process which is not consistent with the original one w.r.t. the pre-defined business rules. This paper introduces a novel approach of optimizing process portfolio both locally and globally by considering inter-operating relationships between process models as well as taking into account the minimal change strategy. © Springer Science+Business Media, LLC 2011.

In the real applications of wireless sensor networks (WSNs), a great number of sensors are distributed in the region of interest in order to monitor the environment. The area covered and the energy consumed by the sensors are two key problems of the WSNs. There are several efforts which tried to find the coverage percentage of the network, and eliminate the redundant sensors;however, none of them have considered the presence of obstacles in the region of interest. In this paper, we propose a new efficient algorithm to compute the area covered by the sensors in a region containing transparent and opaque obstacles, and study the problem of detecting and eliminating redundant sensors in order to improve energy efficiency, while preserving the network's coverage. The proposed algorithm uses computational geometry techniques and is applicable for both homogeneous and heterogeneous WSNs. Also, the obstacles can have arbitrary polygonal shapes which are placed in arbitrary locations. © 2011 MIPRO.

A critical aspect of applications with wireless sensor networks is network lifetime. Therefore, judicious power management and scheduling can effectively extend operational time. One way to prolong the network lifetime is to divide the network into cover sets, where each cover set is capable of monitoring all targets. In this paper, we propose a novel and efficient algorithm which considers both residual energy and overlapping target to generate the maximum number of cover sets. Additionally, the algorithm can generate both disjoint and non-disjoint cover sets. Also, the proposed algorithm does not need information about targets which each sensor covers, or the sensors which a target is covered by them, in advance. Through simulation, we show that the proposed algorithm outperforms other similar algorithms in term of execution time, while it produces comparable results in term of number of generated cover sets. © 2011 MIPRO.

The information overload problem results in the under-use of some existing e-Government services. Recommender systems have proven to be an effective solution to the information overload problem by providing users with information and services specific to their needs, rather than an undifferentiated mass of information. This paper focuses on how e-Governments can support businesses, which are seeking ‘one-to-one’ e-services, on the problem of finding adequate business partners. For this purpose, a Hybrid Semantic-enhanced Collaborative Filtering (HSeCF) recommendation approach to provide personalized Government-to-Business (G2B) e-services, and in particular, business partner recommendation e-services for Small to Medium Businesses is proposed. Experimental results on two data sets, MovieLens and BizSeeker, show that the proposed HSeCF approach significantly outperforms the benchmark item-based CF algorithms, especially in dealing with sparsity or cold-start item problems. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2011.
