Computer trustworthiness continues to increase in importance as a pressing scientific, economic, and social problem. In today's environment, there is heightened awareness of the threat of well-funded professional cyber hackers and the potential for nation-state sponsored cyber warfare. An accelerating trend of the last decade has been the growing integration role of computing and communication in critical infrastructure systems that now have complex interdependencies rooted in information technologies. These overlapping and interacting trends force us to recognize that trustworthiness of our computer systems is not an IT issue anymore;it has a direct and immediate impact on our critical infrastructure. Security is often a collective enterprise, with complicated interdependencies and composition issues among a variety of participants. This poses a challenge for traditional engineering education models and curricula. The panel will discuss experiences and strategies to establish curricular foundation elements providing CSET graduates with an understanding of the interaction between cyber security, critical infrastructure systems and public policy.

Model inconsistency management is a crucial aspect of model-driven software engineering. It is therefore important to provide automated support for this activity. The problem is, however, that the resolution of inconsistencies may give rise to new inconsistencies. To address this problem, we propose to express inconsistency detection and resolutions as graph transformation rules, and to apply the theory of critical pair analysis to analyse potential dependencies between the detection and resolution of model inconsistencies. As a proof-of-concept, we report on an experiment that we have carried out along these lines using the critical pair analysis algorithm implemented in the state-of-the-art graph transformation tool AGG. The results show that both anticipated and unexpected dependencies between inconsistency detection and resolution rules are found by AGG. We discuss how the integration of the proposed approach into contemporary modelling tools may improve inconsistency management in various ways. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2006.

Computer Supported Collaborative Learning activities involve combination of complex software tools that often need to interoperate in a wider context of learning. This paper proposes a data model that accommodates requirements of typical collaborative learning situations and facilitates interoperability of tools and interchange of products of collaboration and evaluation data. The model has been tested against various typical tools used for both synchronous and asynchronous collaboration of groups of students. © 2006 IEEE.

Long-duration surface missions to the Moon and Mars will require bases to accommodate habitats for the astronauts, as well as indoor laboratory facilities, in-situ resource plants, power plants, and scientific/surface mobility equipment. Transporting the materials and equipment required to build the necessary habitats would be costly and difficult. However, the use of planetary resources to produce construction materials, or even as naturally found (such as lunar regolith utilized as an outer layer for radiation shielding, or regolith in bags as wall structure), could drastically reduce the upmass for habitats. The materials chosen for the habitat walls play a direct role in protection against each of the mentioned hazards. Choosing the best materials, their configuration, and the amount required is extremely difficult due to the immense size of the design region. For example a 3-layer habitat wall created from 20 possible materials all with varying thicknesses would have #number of layers(possible material types)∧(possible thicknesses) = 320∧inf possible solutions. Clearly, an optimization method is warranted for habitat wall design. Standard optimization techniques are not suitable for problems with such large search spaces. To overcome the large search regions, a habitat wall design tool using genetic algorithms has been developed. GAs use a "survival of the fittest" philosophy, where the most fit individuals are more likely to survive and reproduce, therefore transmitting their genes to the next generation. This paper focuses on finding optimal GA parameters for the habitat optimization tool. This tool is a multiobjective formulation of structural analysis, heat loss, radiation, and meteoroid protection. Some of the constraint calculations (i.e. safety factor, deflection, and heat loss) require long computation times. Ontologies are becoming increasingly important in the biomedical domain since they enable the re-use and sharing of knowledge in a formal, homogeneous and unambiguous way. In the rapidly growing field of biomedicine, knowledge is usually evolving and there-fore an ontology maintenance process is required to keep the ontological knowledge up-to-date. This paper presents our approach for populating a formally defined ontology for the allergen domain exploiting PubMed abstracts on allergens and using natural language processing and machine learning techniques. This approach is composed of two stages: locating initially instances of ontology concepts in the PubMed corpus, and finding at a 2nd stage instances' properties and relations between instances. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2005.

A global optimal algorithm for class-dependent discretization of continuous data

This paper presents a new method to convert continuous variables into discrete variables for inductive machine learning. The method can be applied to pattern classification problems in machine learning and data mining. The discretization process is formulated as an optimization problem. We first use the normalized mutual information that measures the interdependence between the class labels and the variable to be discretized as the objective function, and then use fractional programming (iterative dynamic programming) to find its optimum. Unlike the majority of class-dependent discretization methods in the literature which only find the local optimum of the objective functions, the proposed method, OCDD, or Optimal Class-Dependent Discretization, finds the global optimum. The experimental results demonstrate that this algorithm is very effective in classification when coupled with popular learning systems such as C4.5 decision trees and Naive-Bayes classifier. It can be used to discretize continuous variables for many existing inductive learning systems. © 2004-IOS Press and the authors.

H.264 is an advanced video compression standard, absorbing the advantages of the previous standards. In this paper, block-based stereoscopic video coding is studied, and some schemes of using H.264 are discussed. The stereoscopic video coding methods based on H.264 and based on H.263+ are also compared by the experiments, experimental results show that the former is more effective than the latter in compression efficiency and image quality, and the H.264-based stereoscopic video coding scheme with temporal scalability is quite effective. © 2004 IEEE.

In this paper we introduce a new algorithm for planar orthogonal drawing of complete binary trees on the surface of a given simple rectilinear polygon. Our algorithm aims to uniformly distribute the vertices of the given tree on the given surface and to reduce the total number of edge bends as much as possible. We also introduce a new linear time algorithm for bisecting simple (rectilinear) polygons, assuming the straight skeletons of the polygons are given. To our knowledge, this paper and the previous works of the authors are the first attempts for developing algorithms that draw trees on 2D surfaces which are bounded by simple (rectilinear) polygons.

The proportion of software systems in the cars of today has increased rapidly, resulting in a considerable boost in value-added in the automotive domain. In the meantime, the vehicular features realized through software have come to represent an integrant differentiating factor between the products of the various car producers. And it is not only comfort functionalities that are concerned, but also security- and safety-relevant applications such as ABS or the airbag. Hence the development of customer-oriented software with high and reliable quality now plays a more and more important role. In this contribution our experiences gained in the development of specifications for innovative automotive software systems are presented. Requirements engineering methods and processes in the development of innovations differ from the development of established systems the more the innovative system encompasses different domains: the commitment of domain experts is hence needed. We describe specific challenges in this context and sketch some burning issues open to research to meet the problems we are currently facing.
