Medical errors contribute significantly to morbidity and mortality, emphasizing the critical role of Clinical Guidelines (GLs) in patient care. Automating GL application can enhance GL adherence, improve patient outcomes, and reduce costs. However, several barriers exist to GL implementation and real-time automated support. Challenges include creating a formalized, machine-comprehensible GL representation, and an episodic decision-support system for sporadic treatment advice. This system must accommodate the non-continuous nature of care delivery, including partial actions or partially met treatment goals. We describe the design and implementation of an episodic GL-based clinical decision support system and its retrospective technical evaluation using patient records from a geriatric center. Initial evaluation scores of the e-Picard system were promising, with a mean 94% correctness and 90% completeness based on 50 random pressure ulcer patients. Errors were mainly due to knowledge specification, algorithmic issues, and missing data. Post-corrections, scores improved to 100% correctness and a mean 97% completeness, with missing data still affecting completeness. The results validate the system's capability to assess guideline adherence and provide quality recommendations. Despite initial limitations, we have demonstrated the feasibility of providing, through the e-Picard episodic algorithm, realistic medical decision-making support for noncontinuous, intermittent consultations. © 2024 The Authors.

As edge computing continues to play a pivotal role in modern computing architectures, ensuring robust cybersecurity becomes imperative. This paper introduces our emerging results on a comprehensive approach to bolster the cyber-resilience of edge computing systems by incorporating the MAPE-K (Monitor, Analyze, Plan, Execute, and Knowledge) loop. The proposed methodology involves the application of the MAPE-K loop at different levels of an edge computing architecture, aiming to create a holistic defense mechanism against cyber attacks. We present a prototype of our framework and assess its viability and efficacy by leveraging real-world edge devices deployed in an industrial production setting. Initial evidence from our results suggests that this novel approach leads us to reconsider how we construct more resilient edge computing architectures.

Applying evidence-based medicine prevents medical errors highlighting the need for applying Clinical Guidelines (CGs) to improve patient care by nurses. However, nurses often face challenges in utilizing CGs due to patient-specific needs. Developing a Clinical Decision Support System (CDSS) can provide real-time context-sensitive CG-based recommendations. Therefore, there is a need to acquire and represent CGs in a machine-applicable manner. Also, there is a need to be able to provide recommendations episodically, only when requested, and not continuously, and to assess previous partial performance of evidence-based actions on a continuous scale. This study evaluated the feasibility of acquiring and representing major nursing CGs, in a machine-applicable manner for episodic use. Using data from an Israeli geriatric center, the results suggest that an episodic CDSS effectively supports the application of formalized nursing knowledge. © 2024 The Authors.

Diabetes Mellitus has no permanent cure to date and is one of the leading causes of death globally. The alarming increase in diabetes calls for the need to take precautionary measures to avoid/predict the occurrence of diabetes. This paper proposes HealthEdge, a machine learning-based smart healthcare framework for type 2 diabetes prediction in an integrated IoT-edge-cloud computing system. Numerical experiments and comparative analysis were carried out between the two most used machine learning algorithms in the literature, Random Forest (RF) and Logistic Regression (LR), using two real-life diabetes datasets. The results show that RF predicts diabetes with 6% more accuracy on average compared to LR. © 2023 Elsevier B.V.. All rights reserved.

The existing advanced machine learning approaches based on Graph Neural Networks (GNN) for efficient traffic engineering (TE) in software Defined Networking (SDN) overlook consideration of link reliability values. Link reliability is a very important parameter, directly linked to end-to-end delay for data packet transmission, and can be used to improve the delivery performance. This research article proposes two versions of RDG-TE, a novel model that integrates Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL) and GNN in order to solve efficiently network TE problems by considering link reliability in both model training and reward computation. The proposed model enables improved performance by more accurately predicting the SDN network behavior in case of link failure. Testing results show that, in comparison to the closest state-of-art approach, our proposed approach reduces the number of disturbed flows by 24.19% and the hop count by 35.38% while also increases the reliable route prediction accuracy by 40.17%. © 2024 Elsevier Ltd

A distributed fault-tolerant formation control law is designed in this paper for multi-agent systems under external disturbances and actuator faults including time-varying loss of effectiveness faults. The initial position of each agent is already on a circle and the control purpose is to form a desired formation on this circle. Based on this local information, a distributed adaptive formation control law is designed by employing the congelation of variables method to deal with time-varying actuator faults. Finally, a simulation example is given to verify the effectiveness of the adaptive fault-tolerant control design method. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

ChatGPT is a language model based on Generative AI. Existing research work on ChatGPT focused on its use in various domains. However, its potential for Sign Language Translation (SLT) is yet to be explored. This paper addresses this void. Therefore, we present GPT's evolution aiming a retrospective analysis of the improvements to its architecture for SLT. We explore ChatGPT's capabilities in translating different sign languages in paving the way to better accessibility for deaf and hard-of-hearing community. Our experimental results indicate that ChatGPT can accurately translate from English to American (ASL), Australian (AUSLAN), and British (BSL) sign languages and from Arabic Sign Language (ArSL) to English with only one prompt iteration. However, the model failed to translate from Arabic to ArSL and ASL, AUSLAN, and BSL to Arabic. Consequently, we present challenges and derive insights for future research directions.

An increasing number of underwater robots inspired by Carangidae are developed, which is characterized by high efficiency and flexibility. However, estimating the swimming direction of these robotic fish is challenging due to the constant swinging of the head during movement, which complicates precise control. In this study, we installed two low-cost inertial measurement unit (IMU) sensors separately on the head and tail parts of a double-joint robotic fish and presented a method for accurately and timely estimating the swimming direction. Firstly, we effectively compensated for the yaw angle drift of the IMU sensors through a fused Kalman Filter. Furthermore, we propose the Anti-Shake Estimation (ASE) algorithm to calculate the real-time swimming direction using filtered yaw angles at a high updating rate of 100Hz. Finally, we applied the method to swimming direction feedback control for evaluation and comparison. The results show that our ASE method performs better than other existing methods in straight-line swimming experiments. The experiment of S-curve swimming also demonstrates the effectiveness of our method in complex missions.

The explosive adoption of IoT applications in different domains, such as healthcare, transportation, and smart home and industry, has led to the pervasive adoption of edge and cloud computing. Large-scale edge and cloud data centers, consisting of thousands of computing servers, are hungry-energy infrastructure exacerbating issues such as environmental carbon footprint and high electricity costs. Developing energy-efficient solutions for cloud infrastructure requires knowledge of the correlation between computing server resource utilization and power consumption. Power consumption modeling exhibits this relationship and is crucial for energy savings. In this paper, we propose PowerGen, a framework to generate server resources utilization and corresponding power consumption dataset. The proposed framework will aid academic researchers to formulate correlations between resources utilization and power consumption by using power prediction models, and evaluate energy-aware resource management approaches in an edge-cloud computing system. It will help edge and cloud administrators to evaluate the energy-efficiency of heterogenous severs architectures in a datacenter. We exemplify the applicability of the dataset, generated by our proposed framework, in power prediction modeling and energy-aware scheduling for green computing scenarios.
