A search for doubly charged Higgs bosons with pairs of prompt, isolated, highly energetic leptons with the same electric charge is presented. The search uses a proton–proton collision data sample at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV corresponding to 36.1 fb−1 of integrated luminosity recorded in 2015 and 2016 by the ATLAS detector at the LHC. This analysis focuses on the decays H±± → e±e±, H±± → e±µ± and H±± → µ±µ±, fitting the dilepton mass spectra in several exclusive signal regions. No significant evidence of a signal is observed and corresponding limits on the production cross-section and consequently a lower limit on m(H±±) are derived at 95% confidence level. With `±`± = e±e±/µ±µ±/e±µ±, the observed lower limit on the mass of a doubly charged Higgs boson only coupling to left-handed leptons varies from 770 GeV to 870 GeV (850 GeV expected) for B(H±± → `±`±) = 100% and both the expected and observed mass limits are above 450 GeV for B(H±± → `±`±) = 10% and any combination of partial branching ratios. The production of opposite-charge W-boson pairs in proton–proton collisions at √s = 13 TeV is measured using data corresponding to 3.16 fb−1 of integrated luminosity collected by the ATLAS detector at the CERN Large Hadron Collider in 2015. Candidate W-boson pairs are selected by identifying their leptonic decays into an electron, a muon and neutrinos. Events with reconstructed jets are not included in the candidate event sample. The cross-section measurement is performed in a fiducial phase space close to the experimental acceptance and is compared to theoretical predictions. Detailed measurements of t-channel single top-quark production are presented. They use 20.2 fb−1 of data collected by the ATLAS experiment in proton–proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 8 TeV at the LHC. Total, fiducial and differential cross-sections are measured for both top-quark and top-antiquark production. The fiducial cross-section is measured with a precision of 5.8 % (top quark) and 7.8 % (top antiquark), respectively. The total cross-sections are measured to be σtot(tq) = 56.7+−43..38 pb for top-quark production and σtot(tq ¯ ) = 32.9+−32..07 pb for top-antiquark production, in agreement with the Standard Model prediction. In addition, the ratio of top-quark to top-antiquark production cross-sections is determined to be Rt = 1.72 ± 0.09. The differential cross-sections as a function of the transverse momentum and rapidity of both the top quark and the top antiquark are measured at both the parton and particle levels. The transverse momentum and rapidity differential cross-sections of the accompanying jet from the t-channel scattering are measured at particle level. This paper presents a measurement of the polarisation of τ leptons produced in Z/γ∗ → ττ decays which is performed with a dataset of proton–proton collisions at √s = 8 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 20.2 fb−1 recorded with the ATLAS detector at the LHC in 2012. The Z/γ∗ → ττ decays are reconstructed from a hadronically decaying τ lepton with a single charged particle in the final state, accompanied by a τ lepton that decays leptonically. The τ polarisation is inferred from the relative fraction of energy carried by charged and neutral hadrons in the hadronic τ decays. The polarisation is measured in a fiducial region that corresponds to the kinematic region accessible to this analysis. The τ polarisation extracted over the full phase space within the Z/γ∗ mass range of 66 Z/γ∗ τ = −0.14 ± 0.02(stat) ± 0.04(syst). It is in agreement with the Standard Model prediction of Pτ = −0.1517 ± 0.0019, which is obtained from the ALPGEN event generator interfaced with the PYTHIA 6 parton shower modelling and the TAUOLA τ decay library. A search for the Standard Model Higgs boson produced in association with a top-quark pair, ttH ¯ , is presented. The analysis uses 36.1 fb−1 of pp collision data at √s = 13 TeV collected with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider in 2015 and 2016. The search targets the H → bb¯ decay mode. The selected events contain either one or two electrons or muons from the top-quark decays, and are then categorized according to the number of jets and how likely these are to contain b-hadrons. Multivariate techniques are used to discriminate between signal and background events, the latter being dominated by tt¯ + jets production. For a Higgs boson mass of 125 GeV, the ratio of the measured ttH ¯ signal cross-section to the Standard Model expectation is found to be µ = 0.84+−00..6461. A value of µ greater than 2.0 is excluded at 95% confidence level while the expected upper limit is µ ¯ signal. Copyright © 2017, The Authors. All rights reserved.

To probe the Wtb vertex structure, top-quark and W-boson polarisation observables are measured from t-channel single-top-quark events produced in proton–proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 8 TeV. The dataset corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 20.2 fb−1, recorded with the ATLAS detector at the LHC. Selected events contain one isolated electron or muon, large missing transverse momentum and exactly two jets, with one of them identified as likely to contain a b-hadron. Stringent selection requirements are applied to discriminate t-channel single-top-quark events from background. The polarisation observables are extracted from asymmetries in angular distributions measured with respect to spin quantisation axes appropriately chosen for the top quark and the W boson. The asymmetry measurements are performed at parton level by correcting the observed angular distributions for detector effects and hadronisation after subtracting the background contributions. The measured top-quark and W-boson polarisation values are in agreement with the Standard Model predictions. A measurement of the splitting scales occuring in the kt jet-clustering algorithm is presented for final states containing a Z boson. The measurement is done using 20.2 fb−1 of proton–proton collision data collected at a centre-of-mass energy of √s = 8 TeV by the ATLAS experiment at the LHC in 2012. The measurement is based on charged-particle track information, which is measured with excellent precision in the pT region relevant for the transition between the perturbative and the non-perturbative regimes. The data distributions are corrected for detector effects, and are found to deviate from state-of-the-art predictions in various regions of the observables. Copyright © 2017, The Authors. The cross-section for the production of two jets in association with a leptonically decaying Z boson (Zjj) is measured in proton–proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, using data recorded with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3.2 fb−1. The electroweak Zjj cross-section is extracted in a fiducial region chosen to enhance the electroweak contribution relative to the dominant Drell–Yan Zjj process, which is constrained using a data-driven approach. The measured fiducial electroweak cross-section is σZjjEW = 119 ± 16 (stat.) ± 20 (syst.) ± 2 (lumi.) fb for dijet invariant mass greater than 250 GeV, and 34.2 ± 5.8 (stat.) ± 5.5 (syst.) ± 0.7 (lumi.) fb for dijet invariant mass greater than 1 TeV. Standard Model predictions are in agreement with the measurements. The inclusive Zjj cross-section is also measured in six different fiducial regions with varying contributions from electroweak and Drell–Yan Zjj production. Copyright © 2017, The Authors. This paper reports searches for heavy resonances decaying into ZZ or ZW using data from proton–proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of √s = 13 TeV. The data, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 36.1 fb−1, were recorded with the ATLAS detector in 2015 and 2016 at the Large Hadron Collider. The searches are performed in final states in which one Z boson decays into either a pair of light charged leptons (electrons and muons) or a pair of neutrinos, and the associated W boson or the other Z boson decays hadronically. No evidence of the production of heavy resonances is observed. Upper bounds on the production cross sections of heavy resonances times their decay branching ratios to ZZ or ZW are derived in the mass range 300–5000 GeV within the context of Standard Model extensions with additional Higgs bosons, a heavy vector triplet or warped extra dimensions. Production through gluon–gluon fusion, Drell–Yan or vector-boson fusion are considered, depending on the assumed model. Copyright © 2017, The Authors. All rights reserved.

A search for long-lived, massive particles predicted by many theories beyond the Standard Model is presented. The search targets final states with large missing transverse momentum and at least one high-mass displaced vertex with five or more tracks, and uses 32.8 fb−1 of √s = 13 TeV pp collision data collected by the ATLAS detector at the LHC. The observed yield is consistent with the expected background. The results are used to extract 95% CL exclusion limits on the production of long-lived gluinos with masses up to 2.37 TeV and lifetimes of O(10−2)–O(10) ns in a simplified model inspired by Split Supersymmetry.
