This paper presents single lepton and dilepton kinematic distributions measured in dileptonic tt events produced in 20.2 fb−1 of √s = 8 TeV pp collisions recorded by the ATLAS experiment at the LHC. Both absolute and normalised differential cross-sections are measured, using events with an opposite-charge eµ pair and one or two b-tagged jets. The cross-sections are measured in a fiducial region corresponding to the detector acceptance for leptons, and are compared to the predictions from a variety of Monte Carlo event generators, as well as fixed-order QCD calculations, exploring the sensitivity of the cross-sections to the gluon parton distribution function. Some of the distributions are also sensitive to the top quark pole mass;a combined fit of NLO fixed-order predictions to all the measured distributions yields a top quark mass value of mpolet = 173.2 ± 0.9 ± 0.8 ± 1.2 GeV, where the three uncertainties arise from data statistics, experimental systematics, and theoretical sources. This paper presents a search for direct electroweak gaugino or gluino pair production with a chargino nearly mass-degenerate with a stable neutralino. It is based on an integrated luminosity of 36.1 fb−1 of pp collisions at √s = 13 TeV collected by the ATLAS experiment at the LHC. The final state of interest is a disappearing track accompanied by at least one jet with high transverse momentum from initial-state radiation or by four jets from the gluino decay chain. The use of short track segments reconstructed from the innermost tracking layers significantly improves the sensitivity to short chargino lifetimes. The results are found to be consistent with Standard Model predictions. Exclusion limits are set at 95% confidence level on the mass of charginos and gluinos for different chargino lifetimes. For a pure wino with a lifetime of about 0.2 ns, chargino masses up to 460 GeV are excluded. For the strong production channel, gluino masses up to 1.65 TeV are excluded assuming a chargino mass of 460 GeV and lifetime of 0.2 ns. Copyright © 2017, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Searches for new phenomena in high-mass diphoton final states with the ATLAS experiment at the LHC are presented. The analysis is based on pp collision data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 36.7 fb−1 at a centre-of-mass energy √s = 13 TeV recorded in 2015 and 2016. Searches are performed for resonances with spin 0, as predicted by theories with an extended Higgs sector, and for resonances with spin 2, using a warped extra-dimension model as a benchmark model, as well as for non-resonant signals, assuming a large extra-dimension scenario. No significant deviation from the Standard Model is observed. Upper limits are placed on the production cross section times branching ratio to two photons as a function of the resonance mass. In addition, lower limits are set on the ultraviolet cutoff scale in the large extra-dimensions model. Copyright © 2017, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Jet substructure observables have significantly extended the search program for physics beyond the Standard Model at the Large Hadron Collider. The state-of-the-art tools have been motivated by theoretical calculations, but there has never been a direct comparison between data and calculations of jet substructure observables that are accurate beyond leading-logarithm approximation. Such observables are significant not only for probing the collinear regime of QCD that is largely unexplored at a hadron collider, but also for improving the understanding of jet substructure properties that are used in many studies at the Large Hadron Collider. This Letter documents a measurement of the first jet substructure quantity at a hadron collider to be calculated at next-to-next-to-leading-logarithm accuracy. The normalized, differential cross-section is measured as a function of log10 ρ2, where ρ is the ratio of the soft-drop mass to the ungroomed jet transverse momentum. This quantity is measured in dijet events from 32.9 fb−1 of √s = 13 TeV proton–proton collisions recorded by the ATLAS detector. The data are unfolded to correct for detector effects and compared to precise QCD calculations and leading-logarithm particle-level Monte Carlo simulations. Copyright © 2017, The Authors. This paper presents a study of WWγ and WZγ triboson production using events from proton–proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of √s = 8 TeV recorded with the ATLAS detector at the LHC and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 20.2 fb−1. The WWγ production cross-section is determined using a final state containing an electron, a muon, a photon, and neutrinos (eνµνγ). Upper limits on the production cross-section of the eνµνγ final state and the WWγ and WZγ final states containing an electron or a muon, two jets, a photon, and a neutrino (eν jjγ or µν jjγ) are also derived. The results are compared to the cross-sections predicted by the Standard Model at next-to-leading order in the strong-coupling constant. In addition, upper limits on the production cross-sections are derived in a fiducial region optimised for a search for new physics beyond the Standard Model. The results are interpreted in the context of anomalous quartic gauge couplings using an effective field theory. Confidence intervals at 95% confidence level are derived for the 14 coupling coefficients to which WWγ and WZγ production are sensitive. Copyright © 2017, The Authors. All rights reserved.

A measurement of the production of three isolated photons in proton–proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy √s = 8 TeV is reported. The results are based on an integrated luminosity of 20.2 fb−1collected with the ATLAS detector at the LHC. The differential cross sections are measured as functions of the transverse energy of each photon, the difference in azimuthal angle and in pseudorapidity between pairs of photons, the invariant mass of pairs of photons, and the invariant mass of the triphoton system. A measurement of the inclusive fiducial cross section is also reported. Next-to-leading-order perturbative QCD predictions are compared to the cross-section measurements. The predictions underestimate the measurement of the inclusive fiducial cross section and the differential measurements at low photon transverse energies and invariant masses. They provide adequate descriptions of the measurements at high values of the photon transverse energies, invariant mass of pairs of photons, and invariant mass of the triphoton system. A search for massive coloured resonances which are pair-produced and decay into two jets is presented. The analysis uses 36.7 fb−1 of √s = 13 TeV pp collision data recorded by the ATLAS experiment at the LHC in 2015 and 2016. No significant deviation from the background prediction is observed. Results are interpreted in a SUSY simplified model where the lightest supersymmetric particle is the top squark, t, which decays promptly into two quarks through R-parity-violating couplings. A search for the associated production of the Higgs boson with a top quark pair (ttH ¯ ) is reported. The search is performed in multilepton final states using a dataset corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 36.1 fb−1 of proton–proton collision data recorded by the ATLAS experiment at a center-of-mass energy √s = 13 TeV at the Large Hadron Collider. Higgs boson decays to WW∗, ττ, and ZZ∗ are targeted. Seven final states, categorized by the number and flavor of charged-lepton candidates, are examined for the presence of the Standard Model Higgs boson with a mass of 125 GeV and a pair of top quarks. An excess of events over the expected background from Standard Model processes is found with an observed significance of 4.1 standard deviations, compared to an expectation of 2.8 standard deviations. The best fit for the ttH ¯ production cross section is σ(ttH ¯ ) = 790+−230210 fb, in agreement with the Standard Model prediction of 507+−3550 fb. The combination of this result with other ttH ¯ searches from the ATLAS experiment using the Higgs boson decay modes to bb¯, γγ and ZZ∗ → 4`, has an observed significance of 4.2 standard deviations, compared to an expectation of 3.8 standard deviations. A search for the direct production of charginos and neutralinos in final states with at least two hadronically decaying tau leptons is presented. The analysis uses a dataset of pp collisions corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 36.1 fb−1, recorded with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. No significant deviation from the expected Standard Model background is observed. Limits are derived in scenarios of χ˜ +1χ˜ −1 pair production and of χ˜ ±1χ˜ 02 and χ˜ +1χ˜ −1 production in simplified models where the neutralinos and charginos decay solely via intermediate left-handed staus and tau sneutrinos, and the mass of the τ˜L state is set to be halfway between the masses of the χ˜ ±1 and the χ˜ 01. Chargino masses up to 630 GeV are excluded at 95% confidence level in the scenario of direct production of χ˜ +1χ˜ −1 for a massless χ˜ 01. Common χ˜ ±1 and χ˜ 02 masses up to 760 GeV are excluded in the case of production of χ˜ ±1χ˜ 02 and χ˜ +1χ˜ −1 assuming a massless χ˜ 01. Exclusion limits for additional benchmark scenarios with large and small mass-splitting between the χ˜ ±1 and the χ˜ 01 are also studied by varying the τ˜L mass between the masses of the χ˜ ±1 and the χ˜ 01. The modification of the production of J/ψ, ψ(2S), and Υ(nS) (n = 1, 2, 3) in p+Pb collisions with respect to their production in pp collisions has been studied. The p+Pb and pp datasets used in this paper correspond to integrated luminosities of 28 nb−1 and 25 pb−1 respectively, collected in 2013 and 2015 by the ATLAS detector at the LHC, both at a centre-of-mass energy per nucleon pair of 5.02 TeV. The quarkonium states are reconstructed in the dimuon decay channel. The yields of J/ψ and ψ(2S) are separated into prompt and non-prompt sources. The measured quarkonium differential cross sections are presented as a function of rapidity and transverse momentum, as is the nuclear modification factor, RpPb for J/ψ and Υ(nS). No significant modification of the J/ψ production is observed while Υ(nS) production is found to be suppressed at low transverse momentum in p+Pb collisions relative to pp collisions. The production of excited charmonium and bottomonium states is found to be suppressed relative to that of the ground states in central p+Pb collisions. Copyright © 2017, The Authors.
