This paper presents the extended results of measurements of W±W±jj production and limits on anomalous quartic gauge couplings using 20.3 fb−1 of proton–proton collision data at s=8 TeV recorded by the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. Events with two leptons (e or μ) with the same electric charge and at least two jets are analyzed. Production cross sections are determined in two fiducial regions, with different sensitivities to the electroweak and strong production mechanisms. An additional fiducial region, particularly sensitive to anomalous quartic gauge coupling parameters α4 and α5, is introduced, which allows more stringent limits on these parameters compared to the previous ATLAS measurement.

A search is presented for anomalous quartic gauge boson couplings in vector-boson scattering. The data for the analysis correspond to 20.2 fb−1 of s=8 TeV pp collisions and were collected in 2012 by the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider. The search looks for the production of WW or WZ boson pairs accompanied by a high-mass dijet system, with one W decaying leptonically and a W or Z decaying hadronically. The hadronically decaying W/Z is reconstructed as either two small-radius jets or one large-radius jet using jet substructure techniques. Constraints on the anomalous quartic gauge boson coupling parameters α4 and α5 are set by fitting the transverse mass of the diboson system, and the resulting 95% confidence intervals are −0.024<α4<0.030 and −0.028<α5<0.033.

A measurement of the inclusive pp→tt¯+X production cross section in the τ+jets final state using only the hadronic decays of the τ lepton is presented. The measurement is performed using 20.2 fb−1 of proton-proton collision data recorded at a center-of-mass energy of s=8 TeV with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. The cross section is measured via a counting experiment by imposing a set of selection criteria on the identification and kinematic variables of the reconstructed particles and jets, and on event kinematic variables and characteristics. The production cross section is measured to be σtt¯=239±29 pb, which is in agreement with the measurements in other final states and the theoretical predictions at this center-of-mass energy.

The centrality dependence of the mean charged-particle multiplicity as a function of pseudorapidity is measured in approximately 1 (Formula presented.) b (Formula presented.) of proton–lead collisions at a nucleon–nucleon centre-of-mass energy of (Formula presented.) (Formula presented.) using the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. Charged particles with absolute pseudorapidity less than 2.7 are reconstructed using the ATLAS pixel detector. The p + Pb collision centrality is characterised by the total transverse energy measured in the Pb-going direction of the forward calorimeter. The charged-particle pseudorapidity distributions are found to vary strongly with centrality, with an increasing asymmetry between the proton-going and Pb-going directions as the collisions become more central. Three different estimations of the number of nucleons participating in the p + Pb collision have been carried out using the Glauber model as well as two Glauber–Gribov inspired extensions to the Glauber model. Charged-particle multiplicities per participant pair are found to vary differently for these three models, highlighting the importance of including colour fluctuations in nucleon–nucleon collisions in the modelling of the initial state of p + Pb collisions. © 2016, The Author(s).

Measurements of ZZ production in the ℓ+ℓ−ℓ′+ℓ′− channel in proton–proton collisions at 13 TeV center-of-mass energy at the Large Hadron Collider are presented. The data correspond to 36.1 fb−1 of collisions collected by the ATLAS experiment in 2015 and 2016. Here ℓ and ℓ′ stand for electrons or muons. Integrated and differential ZZ→ℓ+ℓ−ℓ′+ℓ′− cross sections with Z→ℓ+ℓ− candidate masses in the range of 66 GeV to 116 GeV are measured in a fiducial phase space corresponding to the detector acceptance and corrected for detector effects. The differential cross sections are presented in bins of twenty observables, including several that describe the jet activity. The integrated cross section is also extrapolated to a total phase space and to all standard model decays of Z bosons with mass between 66 GeV and 116 GeV, resulting in a value of 17.3±0.9[±0.6(stat)±0.5(syst)±0.6(lumi)] pb. The measurements are found to be in good agreement with the standard model. A search for neutral triple gauge couplings is performed using the transverse momentum distribution of the leading Z boson candidate. No evidence for such couplings is found and exclusion limits are set on their parameters.

A Framework for the Nonlinear Control of Dual-Stage Systems

This paper presents a framework for the nonlinear control of dual-stage actuators (DSA). Motivated by various nonlinear controllers that make use of sector bounded and £ ∞ nonlinearities for the control of saturated linear systems, a methodology for integrating such nonlinear functions in order to improve the performance of DSA is presented. The stability of the closed-loop system is assessed by casting the nonlinearities in a mixed sector-bounded plus quasi-Linear Parameter Varying (LPV) framework, leading to a set of linear matrix inequalities (LMIs) to be satisfied by the controller parameters. Taking advantage of the developed framework, a new £ ∞ function is proposed to avoid the saturation of the secondary actuator. Simulation results illustrate the validity of the proposed framework and its potential for the performance improvement of DSA.

This Letter presents a measurement of the inelastic proton-proton cross section using 60 μb−1 of pp collisions at a center-of-mass energy s of 13 TeV with the ATLAS detector at the LHC. Inelastic interactions are selected using rings of plastic scintillators in the forward region (2.07<|η|<3.86) of the detector. A cross section of 68.1±1.4 mb is measured in the fiducial region ξ=MX2/s>10−6, where MX is the larger invariant mass of the two hadronic systems separated by the largest rapidity gap in the event. In this ξ range the scintillators are highly efficient. For diffractive events this corresponds to cases where at least one proton dissociates to a system with MX>13 GeV. The measured cross section is compared with a range of theoretical predictions. When extrapolated to the full phase space, a cross section of 78.1±2.9 mb is measured, consistent with the inelastic cross section increasing with center-of-mass energy.

A search for the decays of the Higgs and Z bosons to a ϕ meson and a photon is performed with a pp collision data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 2.7 fb−1 collected at s=13 TeV with the ATLAS detector at the LHC. No significant excess of events is observed above the background, and 95% confidence level upper limits on the branching fractions of the Higgs and Z boson decays to ϕγ of 1.4×10−3 and 8.3×10−6, respectively, are obtained.
