A measurement of the cross section for the inclusive production of isolated prompt photons in pp collisions at a center-of-mass energy s=7 TeV is presented. The measurement covers the pseudorapidity ranges |ηγ|<1.37 and 1.52≤|ηγ|<1.81 in the transverse energy range 15≤ETγ<100 GeV. The results are based on an integrated luminosity of 880 nb−1, collected with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. Photon candidates are identified by combining information from the calorimeters and from the inner tracker. Residual background in the selected sample is estimated from data based on the observed distribution of the transverse isolation energy in a narrow cone around the photon candidate. The results are compared to predictions from next-to-leading-order perturbative QCD calculations.

Dynamic GTS Scheduling of Periodic Skippable Slots in IEEE 802.15.4 Wireless Sensor Networks

The IEEE 802.15.4 standard offers a flexible communication solution for low-rate wireless small area networks. When the beacon mode is enabled, real-time communication is possible by using the Guaranteed Time Slots (GTS) mechanism. However, the beacon-enabled mode only supports a maximum of seven GTS allocated in each superframe, preventing other nodes to benefit from the guaranteed service. This paper introduces the SIGHT (Skips In GTS scHeduling for IEEE 802.15.4 neTworks) model, which incorporates a dynamic GTS allocation policy for IEEE 802.15.4 networks based on the (m,k)-firm task model. Our approach ensures that at least m messages are allocated in a guaranteed slot, for any k consecutive superframes. It adopts a deterministic schedulability test and an on-line prioritization heuristic algorithm called Slotted DBP (Distance Based Priority) to attend requests according to this schedulability model. A simulation model has been developed, in order to compare the behaviour in overload conditions of the proposed Slotted DBP with other approaches (DWCS and FIFO).

By using the ATLAS detector, observations have been made of a centrality-dependent dijet asymmetry in the collisions of lead ions at the Large Hadron Collider. In a sample of lead-lead events with a per-nucleon center of mass energy of 2.76 TeV, selected with a minimum bias trigger, jets are reconstructed in fine-grained, longitudinally segmented electromagnetic and hadronic calorimeters. The transverse energies of dijets in opposite hemispheres are observed to become systematically more unbalanced with increasing event centrality leading to a large number of events which contain highly asymmetric dijets. This is the first observation of an enhancement of events with such large dijet asymmetries, not observed in proton-proton collisions, which may point to an interpretation in terms of strong jet energy loss in a hot, dense medium.

The DAQ/HLT system of the ATLAS experiment at CERN, Switzerland, is being commissioned for first collisions in 2009. Presently, the system is composed of an already very large farm of computers that accounts for about one-third of its final event processing capacity. Event selection is conducted in two steps after the hardware-based Level-1 Trigger: a Level-2 Trigger processes detector data based on regions of interest (RoI) and an Event Filter operates on the full event data assembled by the Event Building system. The detector read out is fully commissioned and can be operated at its full design capacity. This places the responsibility on the High-Level Triggers system to select only events of highest physics interest that will finally reach the offline reconstruction farms. This paper brings an overview of the current ATLAS DAQ/HLT implementation and performance based on studies originated from its operation with simulated, cosmic particles and first-beam data.
