The cross section for e+e−→π+π−J/ψ between 3.8 and 5.5 GeV is measured with a 967 fb−1 data sample collected by the Belle detector at or near the Υ(nS) (n=1,2,…,5) resonances. The Y(4260) state is observed, and its resonance parameters are determined. In addition, an excess of π+π−J/ψ production around 4 GeV is observed. This feature can be described by a Breit-Wigner parametrization with properties that are consistent with the Y(4008) state that was previously reported by Belle. In a study of Y(4260)→π+π−J/ψ decays, a structure is observed in the M(π±J/ψ) mass spectrum with 5.2σ significance, with mass M=(3894.5±6.6±4.5) MeV/c2 and width Γ=(63±24±26) MeV/c2, where the errors are statistical and systematic, respectively. This structure can be interpreted as a new charged charmoniumlike state.

The Frequency Monitoring Network (FNET) has provided a low-cost and easy way to collect wide-area frequencies with high dynamic accuracy in North American power grids. In practice, frequency measurements collected by the Frequency Disturbance Recorders (FDRs) contain outliers such as missing segments or spikes due to hardware and/or network failure, and 1-D median filtering is commonly used to eliminate these outliers. However, this filtering removes the spikes as well as the detailed information of frequency variation, and is incapable of replacing the missing data. In this paper, robust statistics is incorporated with B-spline function to handle outliers in the FDR raw data. The spikes are first identified by a preset threshold of robust statistics, then the spikes and the missing data are replaced using B-spline smoothing, which reconstructs the FDR data by a linear combination of a family of B-spline basis functions defined by the de Boor recurrent formula. Roughness of the constructed curves is controlled to avoid the over-fitting problem of this technique. The proposed method is only used for outliers and keeps the rest of the FDR raw data intact. Test examples validate this method, and its application may be easily extended to time series data in other fields.

This paper describes an approach to engage hands-on learners in research activities. As a part of this method, students are required to post a question about each assigned reading and answer at least two questions from their peers. In order to complete this task, students must read assigned textbook chapters and articles as well as perform additional research in order to answer questions. Security topics have been taught for some time at universities. The most common approach has been to teach a required topic, and then introduce a security module later in the course. We have been promoting the notion of teaching security at the same time as main course's material. We found that this helps students to accept the idea of writing secure code at an early stage and encourages them to focus on the security issues before they start coding. We proposed teaching secure practices as the default model presented to the students, facilitating the adoption of those practices. Over a period of one year we promoted the concept among our colleagues both in our school and at teaching conferences. This paper is a report that shows where we are one year after of implementation of Teaching with Security in Mind. Copyright © 2010 ACM.

In order to get rid of the limit of traditional methods and provide a decision making reference for the supervision of securities organizations and the risk control of investors, A novel model based on SOM2W network (SOM with 2 winners self-organizing map) is proposed for assessment financial performance of the listed companies. In addition, a tabu-mapping method is proposed to avoid that the same output node is mapped by more than one input. The financial indexes reflecting the whole performance level of companies are used in the simulated experiments including earning per share, net asset yield and main profit margin. Simulation results show that the proposed model is feasible for assessment listed reality companies. It could provide an effective approach for analyzing and selecting listed companies, which has good potential in the financial field. © 2010 IEEE.

Do students really welcome failure, the mother of success? This paper reports the implementation of a trial-and-failure learning strategy, in both entry and senior level computer science classes. The idea is simple: given a sophisticated course project, let students try project submissions as many times as they want before the project deadline. For each submission, a thorough inspection is performed by an automated grading system called APOGEE. A student project has to accomplish not only the functional requirements but also many desired quality attributes such as robustness and security. In 2009, the trial-and-failure strategy has been adopted by four universities in five class sections. We report some interesting observations from student survey results, e.g., one can find out if factors like students' positive experiences of programming, choice of programming language, years of working experience, and instructors are predictive variables for positive attitudes toward the trial-and-failure learning experience as a whole.

This paper describes an approach to teach current events in information assurance curriculum. The approach is modeled after social sciences curriculum for which a large body of research and statistical data supports the use of current events and simulations as teaching tools. As examples of this approach the paper describes preparation of a social engineering attack and a research paper on improving social networks security. This type of teaching method encourages understanding of fundamental theory. Incorporating current trends promotes students interest in the study of information assurance. Copyright © 2009 ACM.

Biomedical literature is an important source of information in any researcher's investigation of genes, risk factors, diseases and drugs. Often the information searched by public health researchers is distributed across multiple disparate sources that may include publications from PubMed, genomic, proteomic and pathway databases, gene expression and clinical resources and biomedical ontologies. The unstructured nature of this information makes it difficult to find relevant parts from it manually and comprehensive knowledge is further difficult to synthesize automatically. In this paper we report on LITSEEK (LITerature Search by metadata Enhancement with External Knowledgebases), a system we have developed for the benefit of researchers at the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) to enable them to search the HuGE (Human Genome for Epidemiology) database of PubMed articles, from a pharmacogenomic perspective. Besides analyzing text using TFIDF ranking and indexing of the important terms, the proposed system incorporates an automatic consultation with PharmGKB - a human-curated knowledge base about drugs, related diseases and genes, as well as with the Gene Ontology, a human-curated, well accepted ontology. We highlight the main components of our approach and illustrate how the search is enhanced by incorporating additional concepts in terms of genes/drugs/diseases (called metadata for ease of reference) from PharmGKB. Various measurements are reported with respect to the addition of these metadata terms. Preliminary results in terms of precision based on expert user feedback from CDC are encouraging. Further evaluation of the search procedure by actual researchers is under way. Copyright 2009 ACM.
