The counterparts of recent results on growth conditions and convex directions for univariate polynomials and quasipolynomials are obtained for multivariate polynomials with respect to the scattering Hurwitz property. The basic idea of active noise cancellation (ANC)is to generate a controllable secondary source which compensates a noise in a certain spatial region. In headset applications, it is desirable to generate: a secondary source which cancels the acoustic noise field, while preserving the useful audio field. This requires that the cancellation algorithm possess an ability to differentiate between the useful audio signal and the cancellation residual at the secondary-sensor output. This is a formidable task for the conventional linear time-invariant filtering approach. since the Fourier spectra of acoustic noise and the audio signal occupy the same frequency bandwidth. In this paper, a two-sensor ANC scheme is presented with application to a noise-reduction headset. The active noise cancellation carried out is based on the concept of the separation of superimposed signals with complete overlapping spectra by using an almost-symmetrical time-varying autoregressive-moving average model (ASTV-ARMA), The significant advantages of our proposed selective noise cancellation approach are the cancellation of the undesirable noise field and the preservation of the useful audio wave field. Simulation results indicate that a noise reduction of over 30 dB can be achieved, thus resulting in a high-duality audio in the presence of a strong environmental acoustical noise. Using, respectively, the theory of resultants/subresultants (inner determinants) and the one-to-one correspondence between reactance functions and Hurwitz polynomials, a set of necessary conditions and also another set of necessary and sufficient conditions, which involve nonlinear constraints on the polynomial coefficients, are obtained for all the roots of the polynomial to lie on the unit circle and be distinct from each other. The results have potentials for leading to improvements over previous methods for estimating parameters of sinusoids in noise where the constraints imposed provided only necessary conditions which were linear in the polynomial coefficients.

In this correspondence, a fast evaluation procedure for the integral I-m,I- (n,) (p) = 1/2 pi j closed integral(\z\=1) H-m,H- n (z)H-m,H- n(z(-1))z(p-1)dz for arbitrary nonnegative integer-valued m, n, and p, is presented, where [GRAPHICS] is the transfer function of an arbitrary digital filter. Evaluation of this integral frequently appears in control, communication, and digital filtering. A notable result here is the one-term recursion on p for arbitrary but fixed nonnegative integers m and n. The computational complexity is analyzed, and two illustrative examples demonstrate some of the advantages of this approach.

The impairment detection method (IDM) is proposed. It is an objective measurement technique of subjective image quality. Given the original and reproduced image as inputs, both images are divided into three areas: flat area, texture area, and sharp edge area. Features are extracted from each area using gradient vector block analysis. The IDM produces three output parameters that measure blocking distortion, blurring, and spatial edge noise.

One of the most essential tasks in the image understanding systems is shape analysis of the binary images. The effectiveness of the shape analysis process requires an accurate description of the shape of the object and an appropriate structure of the input data. In this paper, a new method of the shape equalization is presented. The proposed approach increases the accuracy of the shape description without increasing the complexity of the input information. The method is based on the data interpolation using Fourier descriptors and takes advantage of the statistical properties of the objects found in image scenes. A 1-D filter is used for spatial filtering of the contours.

A theoretical analysis is proposed to evaluate the robustness of the total least square (TLS) algorithm for image reconstruction from a sequence of undersampled noisy and blurred frames in the wavenumber domain. Since the data samples in the wavenumber domain are complex-valued, the results from the TLS theory developed for the case of real-valued data are adapted to the situation at hand. It is shown that the image quality can be improved as more frames become available. In the case of blurred frames, higher resolution images may be reconstructed using the TLS algorithm with post-deblurring. Finally, computer simulation results are provided to demonstrate the robustness of the TLS algorithm for image reconstruction.< >
