Linear discriminant analysis (LDA) is a well-known feature-extraction technique for data analytic and pattern classification. As the dimensionality of multimedia data has increased in this big era, it is often to characterize data by tensors. Over the past two decades, researchers have thus explored to extend LDA to the general tensor space, especially in two common ways: LDA of tensors using tensor decomposition methods (by conversion of tensors to matrices) and LDA of tensors built upon the T-product. However, both of the aforementioned approaches have restrictions thereby. A critical problem about how to carry out LDA of arbitrary scatter tensors based on the Einstein product still remains unsolved by the existing methods. Therefore, we propose a novel tensor LDA (a.k.a. TLDA) approach, which can carry out the LDA of arbitrary-dimensional scatter-tensors without any need of tensor decomposition. Besides, for reducing the computation time, we also design a parallel paradigm to execute our proposed TLDA in this work. Numerical experiments conducted over real multimedia data demonstrate the efficacy of our proposed new TLDA in terms of classification accuracy. Moreover, the comparison of the classification accuracies, computational-complexities, and memory-complexities of our proposed novel TLDA scheme and other existing tensor-based LDA methods is made. By leveraging TLDA for high-dimensional feature extraction, segmentation, and user-item interaction data processing, future multimedia recommendation systems can facilitate more accurate, engaging, and satisfactory user experience over the Internet. © 1963-12012 IEEE.

In this work, we develop a multipath-based simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) method that can directly be applied to received radio signals. In existing multipath-based SLAM approaches, a channel estimator is used as a preprocessing stage that reduces data flow and computational complexity by extracting features related to multipath components (MPCs). We aim to avoid any preprocessing stage that may lead to a loss of relevant information. The presented method relies on a new statistical model for the data generation process of the received radio signal that can be represented by a factor graph. This factor graph is the starting point for the development of an efficient belief propagation (BP) method for multipath-based SLAM that directly uses received radio signals as measurements. Simulation results in a realistic scenario with a single-input single-output (SISO) channel demonstrate that the proposed direct method for radio-based SLAM outperforms state-of-the-art methods that rely on a channel estimator.

The detection and characterization of human veins using infrared (IR) image processing have gained significant attention due to its potential applications in biometric identification, medical diagnostics, and vein-based authentication systems. This paper presents a low-cost approach for automatic detection and characterization of human veins from IR images. The proposed method uses image processing techniques including segmentation, feature extraction, and, pattern recognition algorithms. Initially, the IR images are preprocessed to enhance vein structures and reduce noise. Subsequently, a CLAHE algorithm is employed to extract vein regions based on their unique IR absorption properties. Features such as vein thickness, orientation, and branching patterns are extracted using mathematical morphology and directional filters. Finally, a classification framework is implemented to categorize veins and distinguish them from surrounding tissues or artifacts. A setup based on Raspberry Pi was used. Experimental results of IR images demonstrate the effectiveness and robustness of the proposed approach in accurately detecting and characterizing human. The developed system shows promising for integration into applications requiring reliable and secure identification based on vein patterns. Our work provides an effective and low-cost solution for nursing staff in low and middle-income countries to perform a safe and accurate venipuncture.

The PHD/CPHD filter for Multiple Extended Target Tracking with Trajectory Set Theory and Explicit Shape Estimation

In this paper, we propose two methods for tracking multiple extended targets or unresolved group targets with elliptical extent shape. These two methods are deduced from the famous Probability Hypothesis Density (PHD) filter and the Cardinality-PHD (CPHD) filter, respectively. In these two methods, Trajectory Set Theory (TST) is combined to establish the target trajectory estimates. Moreover, by employing a decoupled shape estimation model, the proposed methods can explicitly provide the shape estimation of the target, such as the orientation of the ellipse extension and the length of its two axes. We derived the closed Bayesian recursive of these two methods with stable trajectory generation and accurate extent estimation, resulting in the TPHD-E filter and the TCPHD-E filter. In addition, Gaussian mixture implementations of our methods are provided, which are further referred to as the GM-TPHD-E filter and the GM-TCPHD-E filters. We illustrate the ability of these methods through simulations and experiments with real data. These experiments demonstrate that the two proposed algorithms have advantages over existing algorithms in target shape estimation, as well as in the completeness and accuracy of target trajectory generation. Safety in train platforms is a common concern in railway systems around the world. There are grave risks associated with the tracks and the crowds that often end up in injuries or deaths. Traditional approaches for ensuring safety in train transport networks rely on passive closed-circuit television (CCTV) monitorization that needs constant human attention. This paper proposes an AI-based alternative for detecting anomalies in surveillance videos, that is more efficient and cost-effective than traditional methods. Through Video Instance Segmentation (VIS), this work detects common risks such as overcrowding on the platform, people or objects standing on the edge of the platform, individuals or objects falling onto the tracks, the presence of firearms, and the presence of unattended baggage. The proposed algorithm combines state-of-the-art models like YOLOv8, ByteTrack, and Segment Anything Model (SAM) to classify, track, and segment object detections respectively. Additionally, this paper presents a custom-trained YOLOv8 model for gun detection. The results show that the system can successfully analyze video, create surveillance annotations, detect hazardous situations to alert authorities, and help prevent accidents and incidents on train platforms.

This paper presents an intelligent system for monitoring energy usage in smart buildings. It functions as a bridge between the smart grid and smart buildings. A web-based platform is designed to monitor sensor data and track power consumption on the grid. AI technology provides tips for energy conservation based on factors such as power usage patterns and weather conditions. The adaptability of our approach allows for the tuning of automated protocols based on evolving power usage patterns and grid conditions. Data is transmitted between the client devices and the central server via a Zigbee network organized in a star formation, allowing for mutual communication. Our implementation results in the improvement of the overall energy efficiency of supported infrastructure while ensuring continuous and optimized operation in case of a bulk grid blackout.

The utilization of data analytics to gain insights into the game of basketball has seen a remarkable surge in the past decade. Leagues such as the National Basketball Association are continuously exploring innovative methods to analyze game data, an approach that has significantly influenced the dynamics of the game. But to perform these analyses, a growing amount of data is needed, which is traditionally annotated by humans. This work proposes a 3-stage system able to automatically acquire relevant basketball game data from a broadcast video. The first stage is an object detector combined with a tracking algorithm to extract the main elements present in a basketball game video. Then, the players' visual information is analyzed to identify the players based on pixel color analysis and number recognition. Finally, a statistics generation algorithm assigns the game events to the corresponding player and team, so that the system can be used as an aid for box score annotation in major leagues, low-cost annotation in amateur games, or in-depth game video analysis.

Predicting absolute scores is the most common speech-emotion recognition (SER) task when predicting emotional attributes (i.e., valence, arousal, and dominance). However, studies have shown that emotion has an ordinal nature where it is more reliable to establish a preference between speech samples (e.g., one sample is more positive than the other). This paper pursues a novel direction to combine absolute and relative learning formulations for SER. The proposed multitask formulation can simultaneously estimate preference between speech samples and predict their absolute score, providing a flexible tool to analyze emotional content in speech. Both tasks mutually complement each other, allowing the model to outperform SER systems that are exclusively trained to either predict absolute scores or estimate preferences. The multitask weights can be set according to the intended applications, prioritizing one task while slightly compromising the performance of the other task.
