This paper proposes a new channel estimation approach for MIMO-OFDM systems subject to power amplifier nonlinearities. The harmful effect of nonlinear distortion on the system performance can be reduced by applying an iterative distortion cancellation technique. However, such an approach requires accurate channel estimates to yield good performance. In our approach, initial channel estimation is carried out in frequency domain (FD) followed by time domain (TD) processing of the received signal. In the TD step, the equalized signals from the FD processing is used to remove the nonlinear distortion and to improve the initial channel estimate. Simulations verify that the combined channel estimation and nonlinear cancellation strategy has a performance close to the case of perfectly known channel. Furthermore, a substantial improvement in the system performance is achieved with the proposed technique when compared with conventional methods in terms of mean square error and BER

Artifact removal is an essential part in electroencephalogram (EEG) recording and the raw EEG signals require preprocessing before feature extraction. In this work, we implemented three filtering methods and demonstrated their effects on the performance of different classifiers. Bandpass digital filtering, median filtering and facet method are three preprocessing approaches investigated in this paper. We used data set lib from the BCI competition 2003 for training and testing phase. Our accuracy varied between 80% and 96%. In our work, we demonstrated that the problems of choosing the classifier and preprocessing methods are not independent of each other. Two of our approaches could achieve the 96% accuracy i.e. 31 of 32 characters were predicted correctly. These two approaches have different classifier and different preprocessing method. It means that the performance of each classifier can be enhanced with a specific preprocessing method. In our approach, we used only three electrodes of 64 applied electrodes. Therefore it can noticeably reduce the time and cost of EEG measurement

The intercarrier interference (ICI) matrix for the orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems usually has a fairly large dimension and changes over time for mobile communications. Obviously, the traditional least-square solution for the ICI matrix estimation based on the pseudo-inverse operation has its limitation. In addition, the provision of a sufficiently long training sequence to estimate the complete ICI matrix is not feasible, since it will result in severe throughput reduction. In this paper, we design padded maximum-length shift-register sequences (pm-sequences) to serve as the training sequences for the ICI estimation. Such new training sequences will induce the diagonal correlation matrices which can lead to the optimal estimation. We propose a new distributive allocation scheme of short pm-sequences for the ICI estimation with a linear ICI estimate interpolation, which can lead to the multi-ICI-vector estimation to combat the realistic non-circulant ICI matrix problem, where almost all other existing schemes such as the ICI matrix estimation using the Hadamard sequences, the convolutional coder/decoder and the ICI self-cancellation coder/decoder could not perform effectively

A novel image compression algorithm based on generalized principal component analysis (GPCA) is proposed in this work. Each image block is first classified into a subspace and is represented with a linear combination of the basis vectors for the subspace. Therefore, the encoded information consists of subspace indices, basis vectors and transform coefficients. We adopt a vector quantization scheme and a predictive partial matching scheme to encode subspace indices and basis vectors, respectively. We also propose a rate-distortion optimized quantizer to encode transform coefficients efficiently. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm provides better compression performance than JPEG, especially at low bitrates

We describe algorithms for point multiplication on Koblitz curves using multiple-base expansions of the form k = Σ±τa(τ - 1)b and k = Σ±τa(τ - 1) b(τ2 - τ -1)c. We prove that the number of terms in the second type is sublinear in the bit length of k, which leads to the first provably sublinear point multiplication algorithm on Koblitz curves. For the first type, we conjecture that the number of terms is sublinear and provide numerical evidence demonstrating that the number of terms is significantly less than that of τ-adic non-adjacent form expansions. We present details of an innovative FPGA implementation of our algorithm and performance data demonstrating the efficiency of our method. © International Association for Cryptologic Research 2006.

This paper presents a new application of independent component analysis (ICA) in magnetic resonance (MR) image analysis. One of most successful applications for ICA-based approaches in MR imaging is functional MRI (fMRI) which basically deals with one-dimensional temporal signals. The ICA approach proposed in this paper is rather different and considers a set of MR images acquired by different pulse sequences as a 3-dimensional image cube and performs image analysis rather than signal analysis. One major difference between the fMRI-based ICA approaches and our proposed ICA-based image analysis is that the ICA used in the former is undercomplete as opposed to the latter which uses over-complete ICA. Such a fundamental difference results in completely different applications

We present an adaptive detection (AD) for broadband communication in the presence of co-channel interference (CCI). In the case of imperfect channel estimation, a robust AD (RAD) is proposed to maintain the good performance. We also show that both AD and RAD can be further improved by using an iterative scheme, referred to as iterative AD (IAD) and iterative RAD (IRAD), respectively. Numerical examples show that all the proposed methods outperform the conventional maximum likelihood sequence estimator (MLSE) significantly, and that they are also computationally more efficient.

Automatic recognition of facial expressions has received considerable interest in the computer vision. This paper presents a key frame selection-based system for recognition of four basic facial expressions: happiness, anger, sadness and surprise, in image sequences. The proposed new approach is designed for recognition of facial expressions via a key frame selection of the facial motion from an image sequence where an optical flow is used to determine changes in a facial expression, experimental results demonstrate that the proposed automatic recognition process significantly improves the computational complexity encountered in facial expression recognition while enhancing the ability of recognition

Receiver operating characteristics (ROC) has been widely used as a performance evaluation tool to measure effectiveness of medical modalities. It is derived from a standard detection theory with false alarm and detection power interpreted as false positive (FP) and true positive (TP) respectively in terms of medical diagnosis. The ROC curve is plotted based on TP versus FP via hard decisions. This paper presents a three dimensional (3D) ROC analysis which extends the traditional two-dimensional (2D) ROC analysis by including a threshold parameter in a third dimension resulting from soft decisions, (SD). As a result, a 3D ROC curve can be plotted based on three parameters, TP, FP and SD. By virtue of such a 3D ROC curve three two-dimensional (2D) ROC curves can be derived, one of which is the traditional 2D ROC curve of TP versus FP with SD reduced to hard decision. In order to illustrate its utility in medical diagnosis, its application to magnetic resonance (MR) image classification is demonstrated

This paper describes a platform-independent system which adds spatial auditory feedback to the icons of a computer interface in order to assist visually impaired individuals during icon location and selection. In this enhanced system, icons have 3D sound properties, in addition to their graphical properties. Each icon has a specific sound associated with it. As the cursor is moved throughout the interface, the user is able to hear, spatially, in which direction and at what distance each icon is located, with respect to the cursor.
