Thai intonation can be categorized as paralinguistic information of F0 contour of the utterance. There are three classes of intonation pattern in Thai, the Fall Class, the Rise Class, and the Convolution Class. This paper presents a method of intonation pattern recognition of Thai utterance. Two intonation feature contours, extracted from F0 contour, were proposed. The feature contours were converted to feature vector to use as input of neural network recognizer. The recognition results show that an average recognition rate is 63.4% for male speakers and 75.4% for female speakers. The recognizer can recognize the Fall Class from the others better than distinguish between the Rise Class and the Convolution Class.

This paper proposed two acoustic modelings of the onsetrhyme for speech recognition. The two models are Phonotactic Onset-Rhyme Model (PORM) and Contextual Onset-Rhyme Model (CORM). The models comprise a pair of onset and rhyme units, which makes up a syllable. An onset comprises an initial consonant and its transition towards the following vowel. Together with the onset, the rhyme consists of a steady vowel portion and a final consonant. The experiments have been carried out to find the proper acoustic model, which can accurately model Thai sound and gives higher accuracy. Experimental results show that the onset-rhyme model excels the efficiency of the triphone for both PORM and CORM. The PORM achieves higher syllable accuracy than the CORM 2.74 %. Moreover the onset-rhyme models also give a more efficiency in term of system complexity compared to the triphone models.

In InISAR system, the pixels between two ISAR images derived from corresponding antennas usually do not register properly without prior compensation. A three-dimension motion compensation method, or 3D focusing, is put forward in this paper. With the multi-Antenna-pair configuration in radar system, the angular motion p arameters b oth in the a zimuth and p itching a re estimated accurately and the phase unwrapping processing can be avoided in the procedure of obtaining phase unambiguous. Simulation data is used to illustrate the accuracy of the proposed method. The method has also been extended to stripmap SAR for the interferometric 3D imaging of moving and/or man-made objects. © 2003 IEEE.

Analysis of microelectrode recordings (MER) of extracellular neuronal activity has gained increasing interest due to potential improvements to surgical techniques involving ablation or placement of deep brain stimulators, as is common in the treatment of Parkinson's disease. Critical to these procedures is the identification of different brain structures such as the globus pallidus internus (GPI). Evidence suggests that the spike trains from individual neurons contain enough information to identify the brain structure in which they are located. For the work reported here, spike train data gathered during surgical procedure from multiple patients is used. Using a moving window sampling approach, a novel feature extraction method for spike trains was developed. This method is then used in combination with a support vector classification algorithm. Results strongly indicate that the sampling methods reported here are able to extract the necessary information for highly accurate spike source identification.

A new differential input CMOS transconductor circuit for VHF filtering application is introduced. The new circuit has a very high frequency bandwidth, large linear differential mode input range and good common mode signal rejection capability. Using 0.35 /spl mu/m CMOS technology with 3 V power supply, the transconductor has a 0.9 V linear differential input range with a -54.6dB total harmonic distortion (THD) and more than 1 GHz - 3dB bandwidth. A 3rd order elliptic low pass g/sub m/-C filter with a cutoff frequency of 150MHz is demonstrated as an application of the new transconductor.

Hyperspectral imagery offers a means of uncovering enormous spectral information that can be used for various applications in data exploitation. How effectively such information is used affects the way image analysis algorithms are designed. In this paper, we take up this issue and focus on algorithms designed and developed for target detection and classification in hyperspectral imagery. In order to effectively characterize the information available before and after the data are processed, the a priori information and a posteriori information are used in accordance with how the information is obtained. A piece of information is referred to as a priori information if it is provided by known knowledge before data are processed. On the other hand, a piece of information is referred to as a posteriori information if it is unknown a priori, but can be obtained directly from the data in an unsupervised fashion during the course of data processing. Since a priori information is known beforehand, it can be further decomposed into two types of information, desired and undesired a priori information. The desired a priori information is the knowledge that will assist, improve and enhance data analysis, whereas the undesired a priori information is the knowledge that hinders, interferes or destructs analysis during data processing. This paper investigates how these three types of information play their roles in design and development of several hyperspectral target detection and classification algorithms. Experiments are also conducted to validate their utility.

Time-frequency analysis is one of the methods to deal with non-stationary and time-varying signal such as heart sounds and murmurs. Wigner-Ville distribution (WVD) is a popular tool to obtain time-frequency representation of signal. Windowed Wigner-Ville distribution (WWVD) and smooth windowed Wigner-Ville distribution (SWWVD) are the improvement method to overcome the problem faced by WVD. Determination of parameter setting of WWVD and SWWVD eliminates the cross-terms and improve time-frequency representation. The accuracy of time-frequency representation of simulated heart sounds and murmurs are compared and determined based on the mainlobe width, peak-to-sidelobe average ratio and signal-to-interference ratio. It is found that the most accurate time-frequency representation can be obtained using the SWWVD.

Blind equalization draws a lot of attention. Several statistical objective functions such as kurtosis and constant modulus were based on the noise-free model and hence their ISI cancellers were sensitive to noise. In this paper, a unifying adaptive blind equalization method is proposed, which can be robust to noise than the current cumulant-based adaptive methods. Our new objective functions can be applied for wired or wireless i.i.d. communication symbols with noise. The simulation shows that our new method outperforms the kurtosis-based method when the background noise exists.

This paper considers detection techniques for unresolved Ricean/Rayleigh fading multipath channels. It is well known that the optimal receiver has an estimator-correlator form, with a minimum mean-square error (MMSE) estimate. With known multipath delays and unknown specular phases, the Ricean non-coherent multipath channel is a case where the received noiseless signal process is non-Gaussian, and the MMSE estimator is non-linear in the observation. This work presents novel, explicit expressions for such a MMSE estimator. It is shown that the MMSE estimate has the same multipath format as the noiseless received signal, with the unknown parameters replaced by corresponding estimates. The MMSE estimator scales down contributions from specular multipath components with poor phase estimates, reducing their effect on the detection process. The estimator includes a multipath decorrelation operation which is essential to avoid error floors over unresolved multipath channels. Based on matched filter bounds, it is shown that little degradation gains are obtained by employing suboptimal linear estimator-correlators, provided that they include the decorrelation operation.
