Oxidation of the cation occurs only in NiSO46H20 and MnSO4H20. Reduction of the S 0 4 " occurs only in NiS046H20. The remaining sulfate hydrates decompose to yield H2 and C^ only in very low yields. A mechanism is given to explain the observed results. Copyright 1966 by ASTM International.

The mechanism of the radiation-induced decomposition of the alkali and alkaline earth perchlorates is discussed. Evidence is presented to show that ClO3-, Cl-, ClO2-, ClO2, and oxygen are the primary products and that ClO- is not, its appearance being concomitant with a decrease in the yield of ClO2 and ClO2-. The yields of (ClO2 + ClO2-) and Cl- are related and appear to originate from a competitive primary reaction. data are presented on the thermal decomposition of the products in the irradiated crystals. It is shown that ClO2- and ClO- thermally decompose to yield Cl-, whereas ClO2 undergoes a neutralization reaction.
