The third dimension of alpine plant leaf traits is related to cold-tolerance

Alpine plants possess unique traits to adapt alpine *** leaf trait relationships of alpine plants can be captured by the two trait dimensions of organ size and resource economics is *** hypothesized that,beyond the trait dimensions of leaf size and resource economics,nonstructured carbohydrates(NSC)would reflect a dimension of cold-tolerance in alpine *** test this hypothesis,we measured 12 leaf traits critical to leaf construction and growth in 143 species across 7 sites ranging from alpine steppes to alpine meadows along an environmental gradient on the Tibetan ***,a cold resistance experiment was conducted at one of these sites to estimate the lethal temperature causing 50%frost damage(LT_(50))of 11 alpine *** majority of variations in 12 leaf traits of alpine plants were captured by three trait axes,in which leaf carbon(LCC)and NSC(including leaf starch;LSC and leaf soluble sugars;LSS)were clustered in a new dimension(PC3)beyond leaf size and structure,and resource *** LCC,LSC and LSS all showed negative correlations with mean annual temperature,a significant negative correlation was only found between LSS and LT_(50).It indicated that PC3 was able to reflect the cold-tolerance of alpine plants to some extent,in which LSS was the most critical *** storage and transformation of NSC under stressful conditions could reflect a dimension of long-term metabolic adaptation and cold-tolerance,which is an extension of the resource-utilization strategy beyond construction cost and growth.

Exploring the frequency and distribution pattern of polyploid species in geographic parameters is of significance in understanding the mechanisms of polyploid speciation and evolutionary drivers of *** here explored polyploid and paleopolyploid incidence frequency in a scale of 100×100 km grids in *** found 33％of angiosperm species are polyploidy in China,and 23％of polyploid *** China and eastern China showed a significantly different polyploid and paleopolyploid frequency,with an evolutionary cradle of polyploid angiosperms in the Qinghai-Tibetan *** species exhibited higher polyploid frequency but lower paleopolyploid frequency than woody species,indicating the former experienced more rapid differentiation and speciation than the *** results indicate that western China is an evolutionary cradle for polyploid angiosperms where harsh environment facilitates the establishment andsurvival of polyploids,while polyploid lineages tend to rediploidize to be diploids with sufficient time in suitable environment.

Heteroaggregation and sedimentation of natural goethite and artificial Fe3O4 nanoparticles with polystyrene nanoplastics in water

Iron oxide nanomaterials play important roles in biogeochemical processes. This study investigates the effects of representative natural carbonaceous materials (humic acid [HA] and extracellular polymeric substances [EPS]) and cations on the heteroaggregation and sedimentation of engineered and natural iron oxide nanomaterials with montmorillonite and sulfate- and amine-modified polystyrene (PS) nanoparticles (NPs) (S- and N-PS NPs, respectively) in water, assessing their environmental behavior and differences in colloidal stability parameters. In addition, a novel extended Derjaguin–Landau–Verwey–Overbeek theory (XDLVO) was developed to describe the mechanism of colloidal behavior that concurrently considers gravitational and magnetic attraction forces. In CaCl2 solution and most natural water samples, negatively charged S-PS NPs promoted heteroaggregation with goethite and iron oxide (Fe3O4) NPs more than positively charged N-PS NPs with increased nanoplastic particle concentration. In seawater, the introduction of S- and N-PS NPs increased the maximum net energy (barrier) (ΦMAX) of heteroaggregation and sedimentation with goethite and Fe3O4 NPs, facilitating dispersal and suspension of the system. The X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and molecular dynamics simulation results suggested that Ca2+ forms bridging interactions between Fe3O4 and S-PS NPs to promote aggregation, while competitive adsorption occurs between the N atoms of N-PS NPs and Ca2+ on the surface of Fe3O4 NPs. The study findings will help to improve the understanding of interfacial processes affecting ions at nanomaterial/water interfaces and assessments of the geochemical behavior and ecological risks of nanoplastics. © The Author(s) 2024.

In this study,we identified ecological pressures on grassland ecosystems and adaptive countermeasures in Northern *** research revealed that the main sources of these pressures included population growth,economic development,resources exploitation,and global climate change,with human-related activities being overriding *** was an important reason for grassland imbalance,causing soil erosion and desertification,especially during the sensitive spring greening *** steppe zones,commercial coal mining was destructive to the ecological *** long-term strategies,we recommend that policy-makers devote more consideration to a new conceptual approach for transforming grasslands through shifting the focus from die grassland's traditional production functions to meir ecological *** this concept,adaptive countermeasures should be developed to reduce human impacts based on the environmental capacities of ***,we recommend the development of environment-friendly industries and reduction of pressures from human activities as effective measures for maintaining the balance between sustainable economic development and grassland ***,we suggest that restoration of degraded grasslands should conform to the principle of natural vegetation to further improve the ecological adaptability of plants and ecosystem *** study is expected to provide scientific support for policy-makers engaged in grassland protection.

The Rana chensinensis species group is widely distributed throughout North ***,its taxonomy and composition remain *** recent field investigations of the Taihang Mountains,a series of Rana specimens were collected,which were once identified as ***,these samples showed significant differences from *** of the type locality(Shaanxi Province in the Qinling Mountains)in both morphology and *** this paper,based on analyses of seventeen geographic populations from the Taihang and Qinling Mountains,we describe a new species(namely *** ***.)in the *** species group.A phylogenetic analysis of the *** species group based on mitochondrial genes—COI,16S rRNA and Cytb—revealed the monophyly of the cryptic species,which formed the sister taxon to *** comparisons indicated that the cryptic species can be distinguished from its congeners by a combination of ***,the distribution patterns of the Rana species in North China were *** populations of the southwestern Taihang Mountains,Xiaoqinling Mountains,and Funiu Mountains in Henan Province remain ***,whereas the populations recorded as *** in Beijing City,Hebei Province,and the southeastern Taihang Mountains of Henan Province should be revised as *** ***.

Objective: PM₁₀ is one of the typical pollutants involved with sandstorm. More and more attentions on the sensitive bio-marks by PM₁₀ exposure are attracted. This study is to probe the sensitivities indicators’ levels by sandstorm PM₁₀ exposure. Methods: A cross-sectional study involving administration on a survey 150 residents in Erlianhaote was performed. PM₁₀ concentrations collected on a daily basis from the local monitor stations from March to June, 2016 were employed as the daily environmental exposure levels (DEEL). Indicators of IGM, CRP, CC16, IL16, IGA, LGG, IGE and IL8 were assayed, as well as questionnaire for individual disease histories were done. Results: Results indicated that PM₁₀ exposure level was positively related to IGG, IGM, IGA, LGG and CRP, age was positively related to CRP and LGG, and history of cardiovascular disease was related to CRP by multi-factor line regression analysis. Further analysis revealed that levels of IGG (p<0.01) and IGM (p<0.05) increased in the group with PM₁₀ DEEL exceeded 200 μg/m³, compared to the group with the average exposure levels less than 200 μg/m³;while levels of IGM (p<0.05), IGA (p<0.05), LGG (p<0.05) and CRP (p< 0.01) were found higher in the group with PM₁₀ DEEL exceed 300 μg/m³, compare to the group with the levels less than 300 μg/m³. Conclusion: Our findings suggest that sandstorm PM₁₀ exposure might contribute to the changes of some immune and inflammation index. These findings provide clinical indicators for the sandstorm PM₁₀ exposure and help to understand the risk of sandstorm pollution. © The Korean Society of environmental Risk assessment and Health Science and Springer 2018.

functional zoning is a key step for the integrated planning and scientific management of a national *** the Three-River-Source National Park(TNP)as the study area,this paper establishes an evaluation system including 13 evaluation indexes which are classified into four categories,namely:ecosystem services;potential distribution of key species habitats;ecological sensitivity;and ecological resilience through the comprehensive analysis on the regional eco-environmental features in the study *** results of the comprehensive analysis,combined with the functions and requirements of management of national parks,indicate that TNP is divided into the first-level zone(the core conservation area,the ecological restoration area and the traditional utilization area)with definite targets of space management and the second-level zone with implementation of control *** method of functional zoning lays a solid foundation for the scientific planning of TNP;moreover,our study provides new insights into other national parks’functional zoning.
