Biochar technology cannot offset land carbon emissions in Guangdong province, China

As a highly developed region, Guangdong province has substantial industrial emissions. Its subtropical monsoon climate, characterized by abundant hydrothermal conditions, contributes to a substantial biomass potential. The adoption of potential biomass-based carbon dioxide removal (CDR) technologies, such as biochar, presents an opportunity to mitigate emissions and work towards carbon neutrality in the future. However, the current state of the land carbon balance and the CDR potential of biochar in Guangdong province remains unclear. We first calculated the land carbon balance based on inventory data. Then we estimated the CDR potential of biochar derived from agricultural residues, forestry residues, and bioenergy crops cultivated on marginal lands in Guangdong province using life cycle analysis (LCA). Results show that Guangdong province has not yet achieved carbon neutrality, with a net emission (carbon emissions remaining after offsetting by carbon sinks) of 925.63 Tg CO2e (CO2 equivalent, 1Tg = 106 t) in 2021. Emissions from energy consumption account for the highest proportion, contributing 83.8% of total emissions. In the highest biomass utilization scenario, the maximum CDR potential of biochar derived from all biomass types reaches 84.30 Tg CO2e yr-1, which could offset 9.11% of net carbon emissions in Guangdong province. Our findings provide crucial guidance for setting emission reduction targets and implementing effective mitigation strategies in Guangdong province under temperature warming. The 2019 Refinement to the 2006 IPCC Guidelines for National Greenhouse Gas Inventories added the method of assimilating atmospheric CO_(2) concentrations to invert carbon sources and sinks;however,many global carbon inversion models are not publicly *** addition,our regional assimilation inversion system,CCMVS-R(China Carbon Monitoring,Verification and Supporting for Regional),needs a global carbon inversion model with higher assimilation efficiency to provide boundary ***,an inversion model based on the global atmospheric chemistry model GEOS-Chem and a more accurate and easier-to-implement ensemble square root Kalman filter(EnSRF)algorithm is constructed and used to infer global and China's carbon fluxes in *** CO_(2) concentrations from ObsPack sites and five additional CO_(2) observational sites from China's Greenhouse Gas Observation Network(CGHGNET)were used for data assimilation to improve the *** inverted annual global terrestrial and oceanic carbon uptake is 2.12 and 2.53 Pg C per year,respectively,accounting for 21.1%and 25.1%of global fossil fuel CO_(2) *** remaining 5.41 Pg C per year in the atmosphere is consistent with the global atmospheric CO_(2) growth rates of 5.44 Pg C per year reported by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration(NOAA),showing that the inversion model can provide a reasonable estimate of global-scale natural carbon *** inverted terrestrial carbon sink of China is 0.37 Pg C per year,accounting for approximately 13%of China's fossil CO_(2) emissions.

Clean air actions （CAAs） in China have been linked to considerable benefits in public ***,whether the beneficial effects of CAAs are equally distributed geographically is *** high-resolution maps of the distributions of major air pollutants (fine particulate matter[PM2.5]and ozone[O3]) and population,we aimed to track spatiotemporal changes in health impacts from,and geographic inequality embedded in,the reduced exposures to PM2.5and O3from 2013 to *** used a method established by the Global Burden of Diseases *** analyzing the changes in loss of life expectancy（LLE） attributable to PM2.5and O3,we calculated the gain of life expectancy （GLE） to quantify the health benefits of the air-quality ***,we assessed the geographic inequality embedded in the GLE using the Gini index （GI）.Based on risk assessments of PM2.5and O3,during the first stage of CAAs（2013 to 2017）,the mean GLE was 1.87 *** of the sum of the GLE was disproportionally distributed in about one quarter of the population exposed （GI 0.44）.During the second stage of CAAs（2017 to 2020）,the mean GLE increased to 3.94 months and geographic inequality decreased （GI 0.18）.According to our assessments,CAAs were enhanced,from the first to second stages,in terms of not only preventing premature mortality but also ameliorating health *** enhancements were related to increased sensitivity to the health effects of air pollution and synergic control of PM2.5and *** findings will contribute to optimizing future CAAs.

Ozone is a crucial air pollutant that damages human health and *** it is related to the photo-oxidation of the nitrogen oxides and volatile organic compounds,the summertime reduction of these precursors is the primary focus of current ozone mitigation *** ozone pollution episodes in eastern China,an observed accumulation of daily total oxidants(O_(x)=NO_(2)+O_(3))in cool seasons(spring and autumn:60 ppb and winter 40 ppb)is comparable to that in summer(60 ppb),indicating fast photochemical production of secondary pollutants including ozone over the *** fast radical primary productions are found to counteract the increased termination of hydroxyl radical and unfavorable meteorological conditions to maintain the rapid total oxidant formations in cool *** and regulating the primary radical sources may be critical for the secondary air pollution control in cool seasons.

Transport of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) from land to inland waters is a crucial yet usually overlooked component of carbon budget. Its magnitude and response to global change are poorly quantified due to limited direct observation, especially in China. Here we compiled a database from 462 headwaters across China, primary based on our own observation, and applied a generalized additive model (GAM) to quantify terrestrial DOC export from 2000 to 2020. Our results reveal substantial underestimations in current assessments relying on riverine data. Over this period, terrestrial DOC export averaged 13.4 ± 1.5 Tg C yr−1, accounting for approximately 10% of national net biome productivity (NBP). Projections under SSP2-4.5 and carbon-neutral scenarios suggest an increase to 17.1 Tg C yr−1 in 2060, driven by decreasing atmospheric deposition and rising temperatures. This highlights the importance of considering DOC export in terrestrial carbon sink assessments, particularly as global change continues to evolve. © 2024, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Dissolved organic matter(DOM)in soils drives biogeochemical cycling and soil functions in different directions depending on its molecular ***,there is a distinct paucity of information concerning how the molecular signatures of soil DOM vary with different degrees of weathering across wide geographic ***,we resolved the DOM molecular signatures from 22 diverse Chinese reference soils and linked them with soil organic matter and weathering-related mineralogical *** mixed-effects models revealed that the yields of DOM were determined by soil organic carbon content,whereas the molecular signature of DOM was primarily constrained by the weathering-related *** soil weathering index showed a positive effect on the lability and a negative effect on the aromaticity of ***,DOM in highly weathered acidic soils featured more amino sugars,carbohydrates,and aliphatics,as well as less O-rich polyphenols and condensed aromatics,thereby conferring a higher DOM biolability and lower DOM *** study highlights the dominance of the weathering-related dimension in constraining the molecular signatures and potential functions of DOM in soils across a wide geographic scale.

Brown carbon(BrC)is one of the important light absorption substances that have high light absorption ability under short wavelength ***,limit studies have focused on the BrC emission from *** this study,size-segregated particulate matters(PM)were collected from three different types of ships,light absorption characteristics and size distribution of methanol-soluble BrC and water-soluble BrC in PM from ship exhausts were *** showed that four-stroke low-power diesel fishing boat(4-LDF)had the highest mass concentrations of methanol-soluble organic carbon(MSOC)and water-soluble organic carbon(WSOC),followed by 2-stroke high-power heavy-fuel-oil vessel(2-HHV),and fourstroke high-power marine-diesel vessel(4-HMV).While 2-HHV had obviously higher light absorption coefficients of methanol-soluble BrC(Abs365,M)and water-soluble BrC(Abs365,W)in unit weight of PM than the other two types of *** tested ships presented comparable or higher absorption efficiency of BrC in water extracts(MAE365,W)compared with other BrC emission *** of BrC was concentrated in fine particles,and the particle size distributions of both Abs365,Mand Abs365,Wshowed bimodal patterns,peaking at0.43–0.65μm and 4.7–5.8μm,***,different particle size distributions were found for MAE365,Mbetween diesel and heavy fuel oil ***,different wavelength dependence in particles with different size were also *** exhaust could be confirmed as a non-ignorable BrC emission source,and complex influencing factor could affect the light absorption characteristics of ship *** size should also be considered when light absorption ability of BrC was evaluated.

Currently, the measurement of the visibility mainly depends on the human eyes, so that the objectivity is relatively poor. In general, the higher the visibility is, the greater the measurement error is. On the other hand, in practice, as opposed to high visibility situations, low visibility situation is more notable. Therefore, for the same forecast error, low visibility should have a higher risk value. Based on this principle, a risk neural network model is proposed, in which the relatively high risk is given for the low visibility case, while the relatively low risk is given for the high-visibility case. Experimental results show that the risk neural network model is superior to the standard one and linear regression model, which provide a support for our work. © 2009 IEEE.

Flame-Made High-Capacity and High Efficient Nanomaterial Wo3-Ceox-Cuo/Tio2 for Mercury Adsorption

High-concentration mercury capture at high temperatures is a big challenge for cement clinker production during the periodical shutdown period of raw meal mill. This study synthesized nanomaterials WO3-CeOx-CuO/TiO2 for mercury removal by both wet impregnation and flame synthesis. The performance of the synthesized sorbents is evaluated for mercury removal at 450 °C, which is above the typical temperature at raw meal shutdown conditions. It is found that the adsorption efficiency of the flame-synthesized sorbent remains above 95% after 30 days of absorption, while the sorbent synthesized by wet impregnation gets saturated after 50 hours. To understand the adsorption mechanism, the physicochemical properties of the sorbents including surface area, pore volume and average pore diameter, phase composition, morphology, valence states of surface elements are characterized by N2 adsorption isotherm, transmission electron microscope, X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) separately. The results show that the flame-synthesized sorbent has a larger specific surface area and smaller primary particle sizes than the sorbent by wet impregnation. In addition, Cu atoms are dispersed in the flame-synthesized sorbent while CuO clusters are supported on CeO2 in the sorbent by wet impregnation. Based on the XPS results, it can be found that the oxidizing species is the adsorbed molecular oxygen from environment for flame-synthesized sorbent but surface active oxygen (Oβ) is consumed for the sorbent synthesized by the impregnation method. © 2023, The Authors.
