Some systems have the ability to resist the damage of shocks given its material, structure, and/or special designed devices. In this paper, a new competing risks model is developed for systems that experience natural degradation process and random shocks. Hard failure may occur due to a fatal shock, while soft failure happens when the comprehensive effect including natural degradation amount and cumulative damage of shocks, exceeds the predefined soft failure threshold. The resistance of the system is considered in this study, which may affect the cumulative damage of shocks. In addition, As the system degrades, its resistance to shocks will also deteriorate, leading to the result that the resistance function of the proposed model is time-varying and can be driven by the degraded state of the system. In addition, the thresholds for categorization of shocks, namely safety shocks, damage shocks and fatal shocks, are also affected by the system resistance. A closed-form reliability function is obtained under specific conditions and an illustrative example is provided to demonstrate the proposed model.

The terrestrial ecosystem plays an important role in regulating the regional carbon balance, in particular for China, where ecological projects during past decades [1,2] have led to large increases in China's land carbon sinks, partially offsetting fossil fuel emissions. Therefore, accurate evaluation of land carbon fluxes in China is critical for improving our understanding of the magnitude of China's carbon budget, and projecting its future changes.

The break of large landslide dam will trigger catastrophic flood hazard to the downstream area. To manage the flood risk, multiple mitigation measures are required, such as evacuation and removal of obstacles in the river channel. Design of these mitigation measures relies on the estimation of critical flood parameters, namely, peak discharges and stages along the river. However, uncertainties in outburst flood prediction and flood routing analysis have significant influence on the estimation of these flood parameters. Ignoring these uncertainties will undermine the reliability of the estimated flood parameters, which might lead to insufficient design of risk mitigation measures. To enhance the reliability of landslide dam break risk management, we quantify the influence of uncertainties in both landslide dam material erodibility and river channel roughness on the estimation of flood parameters. Successive Baige landslide dams on the Jinsha River in 2018 are investigated to show how the uncertainty quantification facilitates robust decision making for risk management. © 2020, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

The protection for carbon fibers is crucial for carbon fiber-reinforced materials. Carbon coatings were prepared on carbon fibers through gelation, hydrothermal caramelization and pyrolysis, with glucose as precursor of carbon. The glucose-to-carbon conversion mechanism was explored, as well as the effect of high pressure in hydrothermal reactor and the catalytic role of KCl. The high pressure suppressed gas escape and was beneficial to the formation of dense carbon coating. The KCl promoted the generation of 5-HMF, thereby accelerated the glucose-to-caramel conversion. C f /ZrB 2 -SiC composites were prepared by introducing ZrB 2 -SiC slurry into the carbon fiber preform and hot press sintering. The carbon coating protected the carbon fibers from damage during sintering at high temperature. The carbon coating significantly improved the flexural strength, fracture toughness, and fracture work of C f /ZrB 2 -SiC composites from 122 MPa, 3.24 MPa‧m 1/2 , and 231.6 J/m 2 to 321 MPa, 5.87 MPa‧m 1/2 , and 567.1 J/m 2 , respectively.

2020 was an unprecedented year,with rapid and drastic changes in human mobility due to the COVID-19 *** understand the variation in commuting patterns among the Chinese population across stable and unstable periods,we used nationwide mobility data from 318 million mobile phone users in China to examine the extreme fluctuations of population movements in 2020,ranging from the Lunar New Year travel season(chunyun), to the exceptional calm of COVID-19 lockdown,and then to the recovery *** observed that cross-city movements,which increased substantially in chunyun and then dropped sharply during the lockdown,are primarily dependent on travel distance and the socio-economic development of *** the Lunar New Year holiday,national mobility remained low until mid-February,and COVID-19 interventions delayed more than 72.89 million people returning to large *** network analysis revealed clusters of highly connected cities,conforming to the social-economic division of urban agglomerations in *** the mass migration back to large cities was delayed,smaller cities connected more densely to form new *** the recovery period after travel restrictions were lifted,the netflows of over 55% city pairs reversed in direction compared to before the *** findings offer the most comprehensive picture of Chinese mobility at fine resolution across various scenarios in China and are of critical importance for decision making regarding future public-health-emergency response,transportation planning and regional economic development,among others.

Hyper-redundant robots are usually used in confined space for the inspection and operations because of their dexterity and conformability. However, these robots usually use the kinematics to calculate their shape for control, and errors could be introduced inevitably due to the assembly, cable elongation, etc. This paper develops a cable-driven multi-section robot with angular sensing units for confined space. Kinematics based on D-H convention is built, and an optimization algorithm based on two-layer iteration is developed to achieve the follow-the-leader control. A feedback control using angular sensing is implemented to improve the overall accuracy. Also, force sensors are also employed to measure the tension on each actuation cable at the proximal end. Different target curves are generated for testing the feasibility, and motion simulations are conducted to successfully demonstrate the robot’s insertion. Finally, six experiments on a three-link robot prototype are carried out to validate the proposed kinematics and control algorithm. Results show that the average positioning error for the tip is 5.27 mm.

Significance Terahertz phased array technology, an emerging field within electromagnetic wave applications, operates between microwave and infrared frequencies, offering unique spectral characteristics. Its potential advantages, including large bandwidth, high resolution, high integration, non-destructive capabilities, and strong penetration are increasingly being developed. These features make it highly promising for applications in wireless communication, high-resolution imaging, biological imaging, and security inspection. In terms of architecture, terahertz phased arrays are broadly divided into active and passive types. Active arrays feature transmit/receive components for each array element, enabling independent generation, manipulation, and reception of terahertz waves. This configuration enhances beam control, integration, and reliability, leveraging semiconductor chip processes for high-resolution imaging and high-speed communication. Passive arrays distribute electromagnetic waves to phase-controllable metasurface units via passive networks or aperture-fed systems. They excel in array scalability and power capacity, utilizing materials like liquid crystals, semiconductors, phase-change materials, and graphene for greater flexibility and broad application potential. Research in this field not only advances fundamental science but also supports the development of related industries, paving the way for next-generation communication technologies and imaging devices. Progress In active phased arrays, researchers have developed novel terahertz transmitters and receivers using advanced chip technologies, efficient semiconductor materials, and microwave integrated circuit techniques, achieving broader phase dynamic range, higher output power, and greater control precision. For instance, a two-dimensional delay-coupled oscillator structure is constructed using a 65 nm CMOS process, leveraging the phenomenon of injection locking [Fig. 1(a)] to create a beam-scanning

Remaining Useful Life Transfer Prediction and Cycle Life Test Optimization for Different Formula Li-ion Power Batteries Using a Robust Deep Learning Method ⁎

Aiming at providing life information of different formula batteries for designers iteratively selecting an appropriate formula, cycle life tests are demanded to long-term perform until battery capacity reaching a pre-set failure threshold. However, the time-consuming test brings a high and unbearable cost to battery enterprise specifically focusing on cost and efficiency. For this practical problem, a prediction-based test optimization method is proposed to estimate the battery remaining useful life to replace its test life, and to shorten the test cycles for saving the test-cost. The prediction accuracy and robustness to the variation on battery formula and test temperature are guaranteed by an instance-based transfer learning method combined with a highly robust deep learning method named stacked denoising autoencoder. An average Euclidean distance-based transferability measurement method selects the most similar historical test data of batteries with other different formulas. It helps to compensate for the lost trend information of the predicted battery caused by cycles reduction and to augment the data for effectively training the prediction model. The actual test data from a battery company verify the accurate prediction and significant cost saving. Nearly more than 30% of the test cycles are optimized for different formula batteries on average.

This study investigates the in-situ radiation effects on NiO/β-Ga2O3 heterojunction diodes (HJDs) under 500 MeV Kr+ ions irradiation, with a fluence of 1×108 cm-2 at -200 V. The statistical results show that both the forward conductive and reverse blocking characteristics of the HJDs were degraded after the irradiation of Kr+ ions. Associated with the analysis of current-voltage characteristics and the SRIM simulation results, the performance degradations were attributed to the vacancies induced by Kr+ ions radiation in the β-Ga2O3 material. On the one hand, the Kr+ radiation-induced vacancies reduced the net carrier concentration of the β-Ga2O3 and increased the generation-recombination current, leading to increased specific on-resistance and ideality factor of the irradiated HJDs. On the other hand, an oxygen di-vacancies-related trap, set at 1.07±0.01 eV below the conduction band, was involved after Kr+ ions radiation, which enhanced the Poole-Frenkel emission process, dominating the higher leakage current of the irradiated HJDs beyond -300 V. These results provide valuable insights into the radiation damage and performance degradation mechanisms in β-Ga2O3-based devices for space applications. © 1963-2012 IEEE.
