A Synergistic Strategy for Nanoparticle/Nanofiber Composites Towards p-Nitrophenol Catalytic Hydrogenation

Nanoparticle（NP）/nanofiber（NF） composites based on Ag/hydrostable-polyvinyl alcohol were fabricated by a green synergistic strategy via electrospinning. The electrospun NFs served as an in situ reducing agent for the metal salt precursors and a protecting agent for the resulting NPs. Additionallly, during the fomation of the NPs, the water-soluble NFs were in situ oxidized and catalyzed by the metal ions to achieve chemical crosslinking. This two-in-one process achieves polymer curing and metal nanoparticles reducing/protecting synergistically. It eliminates the usage of organic electrospinning solvents, conventional chemical reducing agents and stabilizers, as well as harmful chemical crosslinking agents during the whole process. By the absolutely green synergistic electrospinning, nanoparticle/nanofiber composites with super-hydrophilicity, good hydrostability, as well as uniform and thin particle sizes were obtained. They exhibited enhanced activities when used for catalytic hydrogenation ofp-nitrophenol in water.

It remains a challenging task to calculate failure probabilities of multiple limit state functions (LSFs) using a single run of Subset Simulation in structural reliability analysis. To address this issue, this article presents a variant of standard Subset Simulation (SS), in which a unified intermediate event is designed to drive the simulation procedure progressively approaching multiple failure regions defined by all LSFs simultaneously. All failure probabilities of multiple LSFs are obtained by a single run of SS, which bypasses the sorting difficulty arising from the multiple LSFs. A representative example is used to demonstrate the efficiency, accuracy and robustness of the presented SS method.

Giant Magnetic Anisotropy of Co, Ru, and Os Adatoms on MgO (001) Surface

Large magnetic anisotropy energy (MAE) is desirable and critical for nanoscale magnetic devices. Here, using ligand-field level diagrams and density functional calculations, we well explain the very recent discovery [I. G. Rau et al., science 344, 988 (2014)] that an individual Co adatom on a MgO (001) surface has a large MAE of more than 60 meV. More importantly, we predict that a giant MAE up to 110 meV could be realized for Ru adatoms on MgO (001), and even more for the Os adatoms (208 meV). This is a joint effect of the special ligand field, orbital multiplet, and significant spin-orbit interaction, in the intermediate-spin state of the Ru or Os adatoms on top of the surface oxygens. The giant MAE could provide a route to atomic scale memory.

Dynamic fracture characteristics of cylindrical steel shell under internal blast loading

Dynamic fracture characteristics are the foundation for conducting safety assessment and failure analysis of explosion containment vessels (ECVs) subjected to internal blast loading. The experiment was conducted to investigate dynamic fracture characteristics of cylindrical steel shells subjected to internal blast loading at the centre. The elastic-plastic response of cylindrical steel shells was simulated numerically by using nonlinear dynamic finite element analysis code LS-DYNA. The fracture mode and mechanism of a cylindrical shell were specially studied by means of the analysis of deformation, macrographs and meso-graphs of fracture surface and elastic-plastic response. The results show that the axial direction fracture surface of the cylindrical steel shell exhibits a mixed ductile fracture mode with shearing dimple by micro-voids coalescence. Dynamical ductility deformations appear and the shear bands form when the cylindrical steel shell expands under internal blast loading. The fracture mechanism is that the shear bands destroyed the initiation and growth of the micro-voids and micro-cracks along the shear bands due to its softening effect under tensile circumferential stress. The shear bands and the tensile circumferential stress dominate the final fracture mode. The fracture mode is the ductile fracture. Copyright © 2014 Inderscience Enterprises Ltd.

High-resolution boosted reconstruction of γ-ray spectra

Direct demodulation method(DDM) was applied to reconstruct γ-ray spectra. Boosted Richardson-Lucy iteration was introduced into DDM. Monte Carlo method(here GEANT 4) was proposed to calibrate response function and establish response matrix. First, gauss function was regarded as total energy peak. Spectra line was simulated with nine gauss functions. And afterwards DDM was applied to reconstruct the simulated spectra line and determine peak positions and areas. Compared with original spectra, for case that peak position interval was about 1/3 full width half maximum(FWHM), the error of rebuilding peak position was 2 channels. The rest of peaks could be searched accurately. The relative errors of all peaks' area were less than 4%. Then, three key factors, including noise, background, response matrix, were discussed. Finally, DDM was applied to calibrate the field NaI gamma spectrometer. The errors of U, Th, K were less than 5%. Comprehensive studies have shown that it is feasible to reconstruct gamma-ray spectra with DDM. DDM can significantly pseudo-improve energy resolution of gamma spectrometer, effectively decompose doublets whose peak potential interval is1/3 FHWM, and accurately search peak and calculate areas. DDM can restrain noise strongly but is greatly influenced by background. And DDM can improve the accuracy of qualitative and quantitative analysis in combination with the conventional spectrum analysis method.

Efficient three-dimensional reliability analysis of an abutment slope at the left bank of Jinping I hydropower station during construction

reliability-based slope stability analysis has great prospect in design but few attempts have been made to study the reliability of rock slopes in three dimensions. In order to evaluate the reliability of 3D rock slopes during the construction period, an abutment slope at the left bank of Jinping I hydropower station was taken as an example. The computational costs for stability analysis of 3D rock slopes are high and the factor of safety can not be explicitly expressed as functions of input parameters when the finite difference based shear strength reduction method is incorporated in slope stability analysis. In this paper, a parametric sensitivity analysis was carried out to reduce the number of random variables and the non-intrusive stochastic finite difference method was proposed for reliability analysis of the 3D rock slope. The effects of the failure of two main reinforcement measures, including the pre-stressed cables and the shear-resistant concrete plugs, on the deformation, stability and reliability of the slope were investigated. The variation of the displacement perpendicular to river flow, the factor of safety and the reliability of the slope during the construction period were also studied. The proposed approach of parametric sensitivity analysis identifies effectively the rank of the sensitivities of different random parameters, which lead to greatly improved efficiency of calculation. The non-intrusive stochastic finite difference method provided an effective way for analyzing the reliability of the practical 3D rock slopes, where a decoupled data interface between a probabilistic analysis module and the software FLAC3D is implemented and the results of the slope stability analysis in the parametric sensitivity analysis are further used in the slope reliability analysis. It is of great significance that the application of virtual maintenance simulation, which can find the problems of products in maintainability in early stages of product life cycle. In the process of virtual maintenance, the interaction between virtual hand and maintenance tools influences the precision of simulation and the immersive of users. This paper establishes a model of interaction features of the virtual hand, which consist of gridding, interactive feature area and points, and proposes an interaction method suited for immersive virtual maintenance based on the model. Experimental results show that the proposed virtual maintenance interaction method makes the simulation more accurate and improves user's immersion.

Leaching Stability of Simulated Waste Forms for Immobilizing An^(3+) by Gd_2Zr_2O_7 with Nd^(3+)

In order to investigate the anti-leaching capability of pyrochlore Gd2Zr2O7 immobilized An3＋, trivalent neodymium was used as the simulacrums for radioactive wastes with trivalence, Gd2-xNdxZr2O7（0.0 ≤ x≤2.0） series samples were successfully synthesized by high temperature solid reaction and using Gd2O3, ZrO2 powders as starting materials. The experiments of long-term chemical stability were conducted in synthetic seawater at 40 and 70 ℃. The XRD diffractive data and extraction ratio of as-received samples were collected with the help of X-ray diffraction （XRD） instrument and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry （ICP- Mass）. The results indicate that the phases of as-received compounds keep the single phase of pyrochlore. The extraction ratio of Gd3＋, Zr4＋ and Nd3＋ in waste forms is increasing with the increase of immersion time in synthetic seawater. The extraction ratio of waste forms at 70 ℃ is higher than at 40 ℃. The highest extraction ratio of Gd3＋, Zr4＋ and Nd3＋ after 42 days is near 0.025 8, 0.003 8 and 0.045 2 μ***-1, respectively.

Pyrochlore Gd2Zr2O7 are considered as an excellent candidate for treatment of radioactive waste forms, because of its superior physical, chemical and anti-irradiation properties. To investigate the phase and structure of pyrochlore Gd2Zr2O7 used for immobilizing Pu （Ⅲ）, trivalent europium was used as the simulacrum for plutonium with trivalence. The compounds of stoichiometry Gd2-xEuxZr2O7（0.0≤x≤ 2.0） synthesized by high temperature solid state reaction method, were analyzed with the help of XRD and Rietveld structural refinement method. The results indicated that the phases of compounds continuously kept the phase of pyrochlore under our experimental condition. The linear relation between a and x was discovered in the system of Gd2-xEuxZr2O7（0.0≤x≤ 2.0） at 1 773 K, which accorded with a = 10.538 41 ＋ 0.008 95 x, V = 1 170.373 32 ＋ 2.985 97 x.

Fe(III)Cit reduction plays an important role in the chemical absorption–biological reduction integrated process. In the present study, two kinetic models were developed to describe the growth and reduction property of strain Enterococcus sp. FR-3 from a chemical absorption–biological reduction integrated NOx removal system. Comparison study of the fitness of kinetic models suggested the X-S and Xt model based on the Logistic equation were more suitable for the simulation of strain FR-3 growth and Fe(III)Cit reduction. The value of non-growth correlation coefficient is not zero, indicating that formation of product Fe(II)Cit belongs to a mixed type. The results obtained in this study may be of assistance for the evaluation on the operation of the integrated system under practical conditions. © 2014 WIT Press.
