This paper proposes a simple but effective bio-inspired approach for skew detection of different kinds of images including nature images, documents, paintings etc., which requires no parameter tuning. Without relying on local visual cues, the proposed approach exploits the global statistics of an image. Orientation perceptron is designed in the inspiration of biological simple cells for local orientation detection. Statistics of their outputs are processed and then transferred by orientation transform into a curve whose maximum value is used to determine the skew angle. The effectiveness of the proposed approach is verified by experiments.

Recently, localization has become an indispensable technique for wireless applications. In view of the limitation of global position system (GPS) in certain environments, alternative approaches are in demand. In this paper, we consider a cooperative localization approach named sum-product algorithm over a wireless network (SPAWN). Although SPAWN theoretically facilitates cooperative localization, it has several practical limitations. Specifically, SPAWN results in high computational complexity and increased network traffic. The main complexity of SPAWN lies in the selection of agents/anchors involved in the cooperative localization. To this end, we formulate the agent/anchor selection problem into a network formation game. Together with a practical limit on the number of agents/anchors used for cooperative localization, our proposed approach can markedly reduce the computational complexity and the resultant network traffic. Simulations show that these advantages come with a slight degradation in the localization mean squared error (MSE) performance.

This paper presents fault estimation scheme for one-sided Lipschitz and quasi-one-sided Lipschitz systems with disturbance. One-sided Lipschitz and quasi-one-sided Lipschitz systems are much more widely used nonlinear systems than the well-known Lipschitz systems. An combination between adaptive observer and sliding mode observer is developed, which avoids the restrictions of these two types of observer. The fault can be estimated here by adaptive observer while the sliding mode is utilized to compensate the effects of the disturbance. An example is given to illustrate the effectiveness of this fault construction approach.

The rapid proliferation of online social networks has greatly boosted the dissemination and evolution of online memes, which can be free text, trending catchphrase, or micro media. However, this information abundance is exceeding the capability of the public to consume it, especially in unusual situations such as emergency management, intelligence acquisition, and crime analysis. Thus, there calls for a reliable approach to rank meme appropriately according to its influence, which will let the public focus on the most important memes without sinking into the information flood. However, studying meme in any detail on a large scale proves to be challenging. Previous bottom-up approaches are often highly complex, while the more recent top-down network analysis approaches lack detailed modeling for meme dynamics. In this paper, we first present a formal definition for meme ranking task, and then introduce a scheme for meme ranking in the context of online social networks (OSN). To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time that memes have been ranked in a model-free manner. Empirical results on two emergency events indicate that our scheme outperforms several benchmark approaches. This scheme is also robust by insensitive to sample rate. In light of the scheme's fine-grain modeling on meme dynamics, we also reveal two key factors affecting meme influence.

This paper proposes an optimal control scheme based on adaptive dynamic programming (ADP) algorithm for complex-valued systems with input saturation. The equivalence transformation is used to obtain the real dynamic system. Then the performance index function is defined. Based on the transformed system, an ADP optimal control method is established. The update methods for critic network neural network and action network are given. It is proved that the closed-loop system is uniformly ultimately bounded based on Lyapunov approach. Finally, the simulation study was given to show the effectiveness of the proposed optimal control scheme.

The sociological theory of entrainment accounts for the synchronization of human rhythmic modalities through social interactions: they coordinate in a variety of dimensions including linguistic styles, facial expressions, music pace, applause, and so on. Though highly relevant, emotion entrainment has received little attention to date. In addition, most previous studies on entrainment are done through small scale or controlled laboratory studies. In this paper, we investigate emotion entrainment in the context of online social media. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time that emotion entrainment has been examined on a large scale, real world setting. For this purpose, we propose a framework that can model entrainment phenomenon and measure its effect. Our framework differentiates from previous research by its model-free essential and discerning in entrainment directions. These traits enable us to model entrainment dynamics under few assumptions, and distinguish emotion flow of entrainment. In our studies, we investigate entrainment patterns under different emotion states, i.e. positive, neutral and negative. We discover that entrainments under different emotions all follow a power law distribution. Besides, people are willing to entrain to others under positive emotion, and users with positive emotion are more likely to be entrained. By inspecting the interactions between entrainment and emotion, we reveal that entrainment has an effect of negotiating different emotion types toward an even distribution.

In this paper, a new generalized value iteration algorithm is developed to solve infinite horizon optimal control problems for discrete-time nonlinear systems. The idea is to use iterative adaptive dynamic programming (ADP) to obtain the iterative control law which makes the iterative performance index function reach the optimum. The generalized value iteration algorithm permits an arbitrary positive semi-definite function to initialize it, which overcomes the disadvantage of traditional value iteration algorithms. When the iterative control law and iterative performance index function in each iteration cannot be accurately obtained, a new design method of the convergence criterion for the generalized value iteration algorithm with finite approximation errors is established to make the iterative performance index functions converge to a finite neighborhood of the lowest bound of all performance index functions. Simulation results are given to illustrate the performance of the developed algorithm.

Based on the adaptive dynamic programming (ADP) algorithm, a new optimal tracking control method is proposed for a class of complex-valued nonlinear systems in this paper. The tracking error is first defined, and then the performance index function which is about the tracking error is given. By transformation, the complex-valued tracking error system is mapped into real-domain. The optimal control method for the tracking error system is presented. The two neural networks are used to be as the critic network and action network, respectively. It is proven that the closed-loop system is uniformly ultimately bounded based on Lyapunov technique. Finally, the simulation study is given to show the effectiveness of the proposed optimal tracking control method for complex-valued nonlinear system.
