A fiber sensor configuration suitable for simultaneous measurement of temperature and strain is investigated. The sensor consists of a high-birefringence fiber loop mirror concatenating with an erbium-doped fiber. By monitoring the peak power variation and peak wavelength shift, it is feasible to simultaneously measure temperature and strain.

We report a novel system for highly stable 100 MHz mode locked pulse as a reference frequency signal transfer through a round trip 20 km urban fiber link. An electronic approach for compensating the fluctuations introduced by the link is proposed and implemented. The rms phase fluctuation was reduced from 75 mrad (118 ps) to 4 mrad (6.3 ps) in 48 hours, and the frequency stability was improved by three orders of magnitude in the measurement time.

We propose and experimentally demonstrate a simple and cost-effective scheme to converge a 60-GHz radio-over-fiber (RoF) system with a wavelength division multiplexed-passive optical network (WDN-PON) system. Only 10-GHz electronic devices are used to generate a 60-GHz RoF signal based on frequency-sextupling technology. For n-channel WDN-PON and RoF converged system, only n+1 modulators are required.

Summary form only given. We propose a step-structure hybrid Plasmon waveguide consisting of polymer sandwiched between silicon and metal layers. The metal step provides an additional degree of freedom to control the conductor-gap-dielectric (CGD) mode to tune the trade-off mode confinement against attenuation. Under optimal configurations, mode size decreases to a few nanometres and the loss reduces to ten percent of that of conventional Ag/silicon surface Plasmon. Due to the ultra strong mode confinement and high nonlinear polymer as the gap layer, the achieved nonlinearity is 3 orders larger than that of conventional silicon waveguide. By using the high nonlinearity of the device, system applications can be explored such as parametric amplifier and high speed time de multiplexer.

In this paper, an atomic system is suggested to be embedded in the fiber Bragg gratings (FBG) to reduce the group velocity and to eliminate the dispersion of slow light. We demonstrate numerically that the pulse can be transmitted at the group velocity 0.147c dispersionlessly in the FBG, compared with 0.193c and 56% of FWHM broadening without the atomic system.

We demonstrate a reconfigurable all-optical logic gate based on predominant nonlinear polarization rotation effect in a single semiconductor optical amplifier. The principle of operation is explained in detail. Five reconfigurable logic functions, including NOT, OR, NOR, AND, and NAND, were realized using 10-Gb/s on-off keying signals with flexible wavelength tenability. The logic operations were achieved by adjusting polarization controllers and the input data power.

We propose a step-structure hybrid plasmon waveguide on silicon-on-insulator (SOI). The metal step provides an additional degree of freedom to trade-off between mode confinement and attenuation. The achieved nonlinearity is 2-3 orders larger than that of conventional silicon waveguide. We then design an ultra-compact, broadband optical parametric amplifier (OPA) using such a structure.
