We propose a new scheme to generate broadband linearized optical single-sideband (OSSB) signal for radio over fiber systems. By using an unbalanced dual parallel Mach-zehnder modulator (DPMZM) followed by optical filtering, a linearized OSSB signal is obtained. With coherent detection, radio frequency (RF) signal can be recovered with simultaneously suppressed second-order distortion and third-order intermodulation. This scheme can be used to realize broadband systems with wide dynamic range.

We propose a 40-Gb/s star 16-ary quadrature amplitude modulation (16-QAM) transmitter using a single dual-drive Mach-Zehnder modulator (DDMZM). This transmitter is demonstrated through experiment and simulation and shows the advantage of simplicity for implementation. Simulation results indicate that error free performance could be achieved for the generated signal after 80-km standard single-mode fiber (SSMF) transmission with coherent detection scheme.

The concept of Peer-to-Peer (P2P) has been in-troduced into mobile networks, which has led to the emer-gence of mobile P2P networks, and originated potential ap-plications in many fields. However, mobile P2P networks are subject to the limitations of transmission range, and highly dynamic and unpredictable network topology, giving rise to many new challenges for efficient information retrieval. In this paper, we propose an automatic and economical hybrid information retrieval approach based on cooperative cache. In this method, the region covered by a mobile P2P network is partitioned into subregions, each of which is identified by a unique ID and known to all peers. All the subregions then constitute a mobile Kademlia (MKad) network. The pro-posed hybrid retrieval approach aims to utilize the flooding-based and Distributed Hash Table (DHT)-based schemes in MKad for indexing and searching according to the designed utility functions. To further facilitate information retrieval, we present an effective cache update method by considering all relevant factors. At the same time, the combination of two different methods for cache update is also introduced. One of them is pull based on time stamp including two different pulls: an on-demand pull and a periodical pull, and the other is a push strategy using update records. Furthermore, we provide detailed mathematical analysis on the cache hit ratio of our approach. Simulation experiments in NS-2 showed that the proposed approach is more accurate and efficient than the existing methods.

We numerically investigate four-wave-mixing (FWM) based multichannel wavelength conversion for amplitude-modulated signals, phase-modulated signals, together with mixed amplitude and phase modulated signals. This paper also discusses the influence of stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) effects on high-efficiency FWM-based wavelength conversion applications. Our simulation results show that DPSK signals are more suitable for FWM-based multichannel wavelength conversion because the OOK signals will suffer from the inevitable data- pattern-dependent pump depletion. In future applications, when the modulation format is partially upgraded from OOK to DPSK, the influence of OOK signals on the updated DPSK signals must be considered when using multi-channel wavelength conversion. This influence becomes severe with the increase of OOK channel number. It can be concluded that DPSK signals are more appropriate for both transmission and multichannel wavelength conversion, especially in long haul and high bit-rate system.

We numerically investigate the main constrains for high efficiency wavelength conversion of differential phase-shift keying (DPSK) signals based on four-wave mixing (FWM) in highly nonlinear fiber (HNLF). Using multi-tone pump phase modulation techniques, high efficiency wavelength conversion of DPSK signals is achieved with the stimulated BriIlouin scattering (SBS) effects effectively suppressed. Our analysis shows that there is a compromise between conversion efficiency and converted idler degradation. By optimizing the pump phase modulation configuration, the converted DPSK idler's degradation can be dramatically decreased through balancing SBS suppression and pump phase modulation degradation. Our simulation results also show that these multi-tone pump phase modulation techniques are more appropriate for the future high bit rate systems.

A new generation algorithm of two-dimensional triple-codeweight asymmetric optical orthogonal codes for optical code division multiple access (OCDMA) networks is proposed. The code cardinality is obtained and the error-probability performance for corresponding OCDMA system is analyzed. The codes with two constraints (i.e., auto- and cross-correlation properties) being unequal are taken into account. On the premise of fixed system resources, the code of the error-probability performance, it is shown cardinality can be significantly improved. By analysis that the codes with different parameters have different performances. Therefore, this type of codes can be applied to support diverse quality of service (QoS) and satisfy the quality requirement of different multimedia or distinct users, and simultaneously make the better use of bandwidth resources in oDtical networks.

With the development of both optical fiberbased communication and sensation, one interesting topic has been pointed out. How to connect those mountains of sensors to detect the signal in a large area, and how to make the cost of sensing system lower enough should be studied.A network of sensors is a good option. All sensing equipments, including the interrogators and the sensors,will be internetworking together. However, fiber optic communicationnetworks have been developed very well over the past two decades. Is it necessary to rebuild a new network for sensors? In this paper, some new technologies in the two areas of fiber optic sensors and fiber optic communication will be addressed. Then, the available overlay architecture of a fiber optic sensors network will be presented. Finally, a polymorphous optical burst switching(POBS)-based architecture will be proposed, which can support all kinds of services, including digital data optical circuit/burst/packet switching and analog fiber optic sensor signal circuit/burst switching, etc.

We demonstrate a scheme of photonic notch filter using differential group delay (DGD) method for radio-over-fiber (RoF) communicationsystems. It is continuously tunable through adjustment of the central frequency of laser source, capable of achieving lowpass, bandpass or highpass filter. It can be operated in a wide range of optical carrier wavelength. Experimental results show a good notch rejection higher than 20 dB. This scheme could be used in RoF communicationsystems to reject the channel noise and achieve a better filter performance.
