We propose that double broadcast services can be overlaid over high-speed point-to-point downlink data in a WDM-PON with source-free optical network units (ONUs). In the optical line terminal (OLT), a set of single-drive MachZehnder modulators (MZMs) are driven by downlink point-to-point data to generate a differential phase-shift keying (DPSK) format. The downlink DPSK signals from different wavelengths are multiplexed and then fed to a following dual-parallel MZM (DPMZM) as a double broadcast services transmitter. The broadcast service-l is an optical carrier suppression (OCS) format, while the broadcast service-2 is an inverse return-to-zero (IRZ) forma. After the transmission, at each ONU, the optical signals are separated by an optical filter. The filtered OCS signal is detected to retrieve the broadcast service-1. The DPSK/IRZ signals are split into three parts, one part is detected by an IRZ receiver to recover the broadcast service-2, the second part is detected by a DPSK receiver to retrieve the downlink data and the third part is re-modulated by the upstream amplitude shift keying (ASK). We also perform an experiment to verify the feasibility of the proposed scheme, where the power penalties of less than 1.5 dB are obtained after 25-km transmission with 1.25-Gb/s data rate. © 2008 SPIE.

Automatic switched optical network (ASON) is controlled with generalized multi protocol label switch (GMPLS). It enables telecom operators to provide automatic traffic provisioning for enhanced network protection, operation and maintenance. The emerging broadband services, such as IPTV and e-science, need point-to-multipoint and multipoint-to-multipoint connections besides the point-to-point one in optical layer. This paper investigates the enhanced connectivity in ASON/GMPLS network with demonstration in field trial of eastern China.

Data-intensive Grid applications require huge data transferring between multiple geographically separated computing nodes where computing tasks are executed. For a future WDM network to efficiently support this type of emerging applications, traditional approaches to establishing lightpaths between given source destination pairs are not sufficient because a computing task may be executed on any one of several computing nodes having the necessary resources. Therefore, lightpath establishment has to be considered jointly with task scheduling to achieve best performance. In this paper, we study the optimization problems of jointly scheduling both computing resources and network resources. We first present the formulation of two optimization problems with the objectives being the minimization of the completion time of a job and minimization of the resource usage/cost to satisfy a job with a deadline respectively. When the objective is to minimize the completion time, we devise an optimal algorithm for a special type of applications. Furthermore, we propose efficient heuristics to deal with general applications with either optimization objective and demonstrate their good performances via simulation. © 2008 IEEE.

Recently, Ethernet Passive optical networks (EPON) is being deployed widely as the next generation broadband access networks due to the convergence of low cost Ethernet equipment and low cost fiber infrastructure. Because of the use of shared transmission media between all users, an efficient dynamic bandwidth allocation (DBA) is necessary to enable the quality of service (QoS) in EPON. However, to receive guaranteed QoS, end users first have to sign the contract called Service Level Agreement (SLA) with service provider in which specifies the QoS performances of the provider has to promise as well as the obligations the end users have to obey. Therefore, the central issue of QoS support in EPON is the appropriate dynamic bandwidth allocation scheme that makes sure the SLAs can be exactly fulfilled. According to the negotiation fashions, the SLA can be static or dynamic. Based on current standardized EPON architecture, most studies of the DBA schemes have only focused on achieving static SLAs, and the DBA for dynamic SLAs is rarely discussed. This paper firstly addresses this issue with an extension of EPON framework that supports dynamic SLAs negotiation, and further proposes a dynamic bandwidth allocation (DBA) scheme to fulfill the dynamic SLAs. Detailed simulation experiments are also conducted to study the performance and validate the effectiveness of the proposed solution.

TD-SCDMA cell search is performed in three scenarios: downlink guide slot (DwPTs) position search, downlink synchronization code (SYNC_DL) position search and frame synchronization control. A fast method for every scenarios of downlink cell search in TD-SCDMA is proposed. Based on characteristics of frame and slot structure in TD-SCDMA, power-matching stencil method is used to find the position of downlink guide slot (DwPTs) and definition stencil method is proposed to decide the position of downlink synchronization code (SYNC_DL). Moreover, the problem of channel estimation for TD-SCDMA mobile communication system is investigated and a new fast method for detecting downlink guide channel is derived to control frame synchronization. This new method simplifies calculation complexity, realizes fast and high efficiency network test system and can be applied to TD-SCDMA network planning and optimization. The conclusion can be proved by simulations and field testing which are mentioned.

In this work, we have analyzed, fabricated and demonstrated concentric micro-ring resonators in silicon-on-insulator (SOI) structure for enhanced transmission notches. The operation principles of the concentric ring resonators are studied by time-domain coupled-mode theory. Directional coupling between concentric rings offers another freedom in designing deep notch optical filters and ultra-sensitive biosensors. The finite-difference-time-domain (FDTD) simulations have shown the improvement of the notch depth, evenly distributed mode field and the effect of the resonance shift. The device is demonstrated in silicon-on-insulator structure. Transmission notch depth improvement of ~ 15dB is demonstrated for the 21-20.02-μm-radius double-ring structure comparing with the single 21-μm-radius ring. © 2008 SPIE.
