In the IPTV systems, multicasting will play a crucial role in the delivery of high-quality video services, which can significantly improve bandwidth efficiency. However, the scalability and the signal quality of current IPTV can barely compete with the existing broadcast digital TV systems since it is difficult to implement large-scale multicasting with end-to-end guaranteed quality of service (QoS) in packet-switched IP network. China 3TNet project aimed to build a high performance broadband trial network to support large-scale concurrent streaming media and interactive multimedia services. The innovative idea of 3TNet is that an automatic switched opticalnetworks (ASON) with the capability of dynamic point-to-multipoint (P2MP) connections replaces the conventional IP multicasting network in the transport core, while the edge remains an IP multicasting network. In this paper, we will introduce the network architecture and discuss challenges in such IP over optical multicasting for video delivery.

An unsymmetrical quantum key distribution protocol is proposed, in which Greenherger-Horne-Zeilinger (GHZ) triplet states are used to obtain the secret key. Except the lost qubits due to the unperfectness of the physical devices, the unsymmetrical characteristic makes all transmitted qubits useful. This leads to:an excellent efficiency, which reaches 100% in an ideal case. The 'security is studied from the aspect of information theory. By using the correlation of the GHZ tripartite entanglement state, eavesdropping can be easily checked out, which indicates that the presented protocol is more secure.

In this article optical minimum-shift keying (MSK) modulation format in 9×40 Gbit/s wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) spacing of 100 GHz transmission systems is investigated and compared with return-to-zero differential phase-shift keying (RZ-DPSK) and return-to-zero (RZ). The performance of optical MSK in presence of amplification noise, chromatic dispersion and nonlinear effects is analytically determined. Operations over a wide range of parameters, such as span input power, precompensation value, and chromatic dispersion parameter are performed;experimental results show that optical MSK demonstrates special performance in transmission distance, nonlinear effects, and dispersion tolerance.

Facing the evolvement of the optical Grid technology, dynamic task scheduling can largely improve the efficiency of the Grid environment under the real circumstances. We propose a Serve On Time (SOT) algorithm - based on the idea of combining all the dynamic multi tasks so that all the tasks will obtain the rights to be served as soon as possible. We then introduce the basic First Come First Serve (FCFS) algorithm. A simulation will show the advantage of SOT.

This paper reports fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs) inscribed in a small-core Ge-doped photonic crystal fibers with a UV laser and a Talbot inter-ferometer. The responses of such FBGs to temper-ature, strain, bending, and transverse-loading were systematically investigated. The Bragg wavelength of the FBGs shifts toward longer wavelengths with increasing temperature, tensile strain, and trans-verse-loading. The bending and transverse- loading properties of the FBGs are sensitive to the fiber orientations.
