Practical security of continuous-variable quantum key distribution with reduced optical attenuation

In a practical continuous-variable quantum key distribution (CVQKD) system, the optical attenuator can adjust the Gaussian-modulated coherent states and the local oscillator signal to an optimal value for guaranteeing the security of the system and optimizing the performance of the system. However, the performance of the optical attenuator may deteriorate due to the intentional and unintentional damage of the device. In this paper, we investigate the practical security of a CVQKD system with reduced optical attenuation. We find that the secret key rate of the system may be overestimated based on the investigation of parameter estimation under the effects of reduced optical attenuation. This opens a security loophole for Eve to successfully perform an intercept-resend attack in a practical CVQKD system. To close this loophole, we add an optical fuse at Alice's output port and design a scheme to monitor the level of optical attenuation in real time, which can make the secret key rate of the system evaluated precisely. The analysis shows that these countermeasures can effectively resist this potential attack.

Randomized Channel Sparsifying Hybrid Precoding for FDD Massive MIMO systems

We propose a novel randomized channel sparsifying hybrid precoding (RCSHP) design to reduce the signaling overhead of channel estimation and the hardware cost and power consumption at the base station (BS), in order to fully harvest benefits of frequency division duplex (FDD) massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. RCSHP allows time-sharing among multiple analog precoders, each serving a compatible user group. The analog precoder is adapted to the channel statistics to properly sparsify the channel for the associated user group, such that the resulting effective channel (product of channel and analog precoder) not only has enough spatial degrees of freedom (DoF) to serve this group of users, but also can be accurately estimated under the limited pilot budget. The digital precoder is adapted to the effective channel based on the duality theory to facilitate the power allocation and exploit the spatial multiplexing gain. We formulate the joint optimization of the time-sharing factors and the associated sets of analog precoders and power allocations as a general utility optimization problem, which considers the impact of effective channel estimation error on the system performance. Then we propose an efficient stochastic successive convex approximation algorithm to provably obtain Karush-Kuhn-Tucker (KKT) points of this problem. Copyright © 2019, The Authors. The articles in this special section focus on the development and applications supported by new smart grid technologies. The term smart grid means different things to different people, and quite rightly so. Our relationship with electricity varies significantly around the world. Many countries are trying to decarbonize their electricity systems; for them, a smart grid should be able to integrate large volumes of renewables. In other parts of the globe, the main concern is reducing the number of outages during common and uncommon events (such as natural disasters). For these countries, a smart grid is one that uses innovative solutions to increase reliability and also to make the grid more resilient. We also have countries that simply want to use electricity more efficiently; hence, a smart grid should help, for instance, in reducing technical and nontechnical losses. On the other side of the spectrum, we cannot forget that around a billion people in the world still do not have access to electricity. For those countries, cost-effectiveness and remoteness are major challenges, and a smart grid might be able to bring about innovative yet inexpensive community-based solutions. It is because of this diversity of contexts and objectives that different implementations of smart grid concepts have emerged in the last few years—and continue to emerge.

Multi-task learning with Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) has shown great success in many Natural Language Processing (NLP) tasks. This success can be largely attributed to the feature sharing by fusing some layers among tasks. However, most existing approaches just fully or proportionally share the features without distinguishing the helpfulness of them. By that the network would be confused by the helpless even harmful features, generating undesired interference between tasks. In this paper, we introduce gate mechanism into multi-task CNN and propose a new Gated Sharing Unit, which can filter the feature flows between tasks and greatly reduce the interference. Experiments on 9 text classification datasets shows that our approach can learn selection rules automatically and gain a great improvement over strong baselines. © 2018 Association for Computational Linguistics.

Mode-and polarization-division multiplexing offer new dimensions to increase the transmission capacity of optical communications. Selective switches are key components in reconfigurable optical network nodes. An on-chip silicon 2 × 2 mode-and polarization-selective switch that can route four data channels on two modes and two polarizations simultaneously is proposed and experimentally demonstrated for the first time, to the best of our knowledge. The overall insertion losses are lower than 8.6 d B. To reduce the inter-modal crosstalk, polarization beam splitters are added to filter the undesired polarizations or modes. The measured inter-modal andintra-modal crosstalk values are below-23.2 and-22.8 d B for all the channels, respectively.

Phase reference calibration is a necessary procedure in practical continuous-variable measurement-device-independent quantum key distribution (CV-MDI-QKD) for the need of Bell-state measurement. However, the phase reference calibration may become imperfect in practical applications. We explored the practical security of CV-MDI-QKD with imperfect phase reference calibration under realistic conditions of lossy and noisy quantum channels. Specifically, a comprehensive framework is developed to model and characterize the imperfection of the practical phase reference calibration operation, which is mainly caused by the nonsynchronization of two remote lasers in senders. Security analysis shows that the imperfect phase reference calibration has significant side effects on the performance and security of the CV-MDI-QKD protocol. A tight security bound to thermal excess noise introduced by imperfect phase reference calibration is derived for reverse reconciliation against one-mode collective Gaussian attack in the asymptotic limit, and the upper threshold of this imperfection tolerated by the system is obtained. This security analysis framework can eliminate the security hazards caused by imperfect phase reference calibration without changing the existing CV-MDI-QKD system structure. In addition, this work will improve the practical security framework of CV-MDI-QKD protocol and provide theoretic instruction for the experimental implementation of CV-MDI-QKD protocol.
