Purpose Diagnosis of lymph node metastasis (LNM) is critical for patients with pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC). We aimed to build deep learning radiomics (DLR) models of dual-energy computed tomography (DECT) to classify LNM status of PDAC and to stratify the overall survival before treatment. Methods From August 2016 to October 2020, 148 PDAC patients underwent regional lymph node dissection and scanned preoperatively DECT were enrolled. The virtual monoenergetic image at 40 keV was reconstructed from 100 and 150 keV of DECT. By setting January 1, 2021, as the cut-off date, 113 patients were assigned into the primary set, and 35 were in the test set. DLR models using VMI 40 keV, 100 keV, 150 keV, and 100 + 150 keV images were developed and compared. The best model was integrated with key clinical features selected by multivariate Cox regression analysis to achieve the most accurate prediction. Results DLR based on 100 + 150 keV DECT yields the best performance in predicting LNM status with the AUC of 0.87 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.85-0.89) in the test cohort. After integrating key clinical features (CT-reported T stage, LN status, glutamyl transpeptadase, and glucose), the AUC was improved to 0.92 (95% CI: 0.91-0.94). Patients at high risk of LNM portended significantly worse overall survival than those at low risk after surgery (P = 0.012). Conclusions The DLR model showed outstanding performance for predicting LNM in PADC and hold promise of improving clinical decision-making.

Person following is a crucial capability for mobile robots in tasks of human assistance and cooperation. In this paper, a person-following approach based on path planning is proposed for mobile robots, which takes person following and obstacle avoidance into account in a unified framework. The proposed approach is comprised of a sensing module and a planning module. The sensing module with a camera and a 3D LiDAR is employed to locate the target person and perceive obstacles. For the planning module, the combination of global planner and local planner effectively outputs collision-free paths and control commands for a mobile robot to keep following the target person. Experiments were conducted to evaluate the performance of the proposed approach. © 2020 IEEE.

Development of a Whale-Shark-Inspired Gliding Robotic Fish With High Maneuverability

In this article, we present the design and implementation of an innovative bioinspired gliding robotic fish and a gliding angle controller. Through mimicking a whale shark, the gliding robotic fish is designed with diversified control surfaces and a streamlined shape instead of the conventional wings with large wingspan aiming at both high maneuverability and distinguished gliding performance. The mechatronic design of the whale-shark-inspired gliding robotic fish is first provided. A dynamic model for gliding motion is established and the hydrodynamic analysis is performed via computational fluid dynamics simulation. The effects of both the deflection of the pectoral fins and the displacement of the movable mass on the gliding motion are analyzed. Then, based on the model and the analysis, a gliding angle control strategy is constructed via the backstepping methodology and the sliding mode methodology, aiming at the robustness of the control system to unknown perturbation. Afterward, a control allocation law is designed and solved by the Newton method. Simulations are conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed controller. Experiments are also executed to verify the dynamic model and illustrate the remarkable motion capability of the newly developed robot prototype. The results of this article supply clues to the improvement of the locomotive ability for the gliding robotic fish in both shape design and motion control.

Percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) has become a popular treatment for coronary artery disease. Highly dexterous skills are necessary to procedure success. However, few effective methods can be applied to PCI skill assessment. In this study, ten interventional cardiologists (four experts and six novices) were recruited. In vivo studies were performed via delivering a medical guidewire into distal left circumflex artery (target vessel I) and obtuse marginal artery (target vessel II) of a porcine model. Regarded as a type of manipulation data, the guidewire motion is simultaneously acquired with an electromagnetic (EM) sensor attached to guidewire tail. To address the deficiency of conventional dynamic time warping (DTW) limited to two-sequence matching, a novel warping algorithm is proposed to match multiple manipulation data. Then the intra-similarity is calculated to evaluate consistencies among each subject's different manipulations, while the inter-similarity is further analyzed to find skill differences among different subjects. Extensive statistical analysis demonstrates that the proposed algorithm can effectively distinguish between the manipulations made by different skill-level subjects with significant differences on the target vessel I (P = 3.25 x 10(-4) ) and II (P = 7.30 x 10(-3)). These promising results show the proposed technique's great potential to facilitate skill assessment in clinical practice and skill learning in surgical robotics.

In order to solve the problem of premature convergence of the basic genetic algorithm when planning the robot running path, the basic genetic algorithm is improved and optimized. Different population initialization methods are used to initialize multiple populations randomly, so as to improve the diversity of populations; Improve the adaptive strategy and elite strategy of crossover and mutation operators to improve the convergence speed of the algorithm; Add the path tortuosity as the planning index in the fitness function to make the planned path smoother, and add constraints to the model to avoid obstacles; Finally, through the transformation of the coding paradigm of the above improved genetic algorithm, it can run on Flink distributed cluster to obtain faster solution speed, so as to meet the efficiency requirements of path planning in large-scale robot cluster system. The optimized algorithm is compared with the basic genetic algorithm. The simulation results show that the improved algorithm is efficient in robot path planning.

First, I am grateful to report that, as of February 7, 2021, the Citescore of TCSS has leapfrogged back to 5.8, a new high, which indicates the high quality and relevance of IEEE TCSS in the field of social computing and computational social systems research. Many thanks to all of you for your great effort and support. After the usual introduction of our 21 regular articles, I would like to discuss the topic of federated ecology, a new way to address the problem of isolated data island in the era of big data. The concept of federated ecology was proposed based on blockchain technology and the premise of controllable data privacy. It can realize data federation, federated service, and then confederated intelligence for releasing the great potentials of big data and artificial intelligence.

A plant factory (PF) is an environmentally controlled facility that can maintain stable crop cultivation while ensuring rapid production and good crop quality by controlling temperature, humidity, light and other growing factors. Although it has many advantages, PFs have high initial and operating costs, especially the energy for lightening. In this work, we aim to improve the light use efficiency by optimizing the combination of environmental conditions (case of light intensity and CO2 level) in order to fit the best plant's demand. To reach this goal, the effect of environmental conditions on daily assimilation rate is simulated using a process-based plant model 'TomSim'. The daily profit of a PF under different light intensities and CO2 concentrations is evaluated. As a result, the optimal light and CO2 conditions can be obtained for a given leaf area index (LAI) of the lettuce plant. Smaller LAI, which means the early growth stage, requires lower light intensity. A dynamic light control strategy for a PF is expected that can fit plant demand during its growth period while keeping relatively low cost.

Consistent Population Synthesis With Multi-Social Relationships Based on Tensor Decomposition

Social relationships have a strong influence on individual travel behavior and, consequently, on travel demand. However, most current literatures on population synthesis, which is the fundamental building block of disaggregated travel demand forecasting and agent-based traffic simulation, only considers the household impact. This paper makes two contributions in this regard. First, a methodological issue is identified: the existence of multiple social relationships (e.g., a dual set of constraints from social institutions or structures) makes it more difficult to generate a consistent synthetic population, meaning that this population satisfies constraints from more than one type of social organizations. A tensor decomposition method is then proposed to generate a consistent population with multi-social relationships. To our knowledge, this is the first time that this type of methodological issue has been addressed. Our sample-based method constitutes an improvement compared to existing approaches in that it can respect constraints from multiple social organizations without reducing accuracy. A numerical test concerning individual, household, and enterprise, using Chinese national population and economic census data, indicates that the new method can lead to stable and relatively small errors in total. The knowledge of solar greenhouse growers on environment control plays an important role in greenhouse production and management. We proposed a way to extract the control strategies from the monitored data of greenhouses by building a long short-term memory (LSTM) model. The result is verified according to the real monitored data of a solar greenhouse, which shows that the model can learn the control strategy of a ventilator in the solar greenhouse. Through monitored data and models, the knowledge of greenhouse ventilation control can be learned, and automatic control can be achieved in a greenhouse with a similar configuration. © 2022 IEEE.
