Mobile robot navigation in smart environment has always been one of the most critical issues in robot research. Deployment of wireless sensor network (WSN) in new environment can provide the mobile robot with efficient aid of navigation and tracking. In this paper, we present a feasible scheme of WSN-aided mobile robot navigation which includes initial localization of mobile robot, orientation adjustment, network-layer path planning, motion tracking and correction based on RSSI in Grid-pattern WSN. Unlike other methods of robot navigation which might require a complex and intelligent robotic system for mapping and path planning, the aim of our method is to transfer complex environment detection and calculation from the robot to network and to decrease the reliance of intelligence on the robot itself. Experimental result shows that our proposed scheme is well-performed and can effectively navigate the robot equipped only with simply sensors for communication and obstacle avoidance.

The research on crown behavior and evacuation laws in the case of unexpected emergency incidents such as fires, explosions, accidents, driving, man-made mistreats in relatively closed, personnel-intensive, and high-risk subway stations, have a good theory and practical significance. Based on ACP approach, the architecture of universal artificial system of subway station is put forward for the first time. And its construction process and its application and significance are provided. It can study crowd behavior and evacuation laws in subway stations in the case of emergency situations. It may provide technical support for designing subway stations, evaluating evacuation plans and training security management and personnel. And, it has also good theoretical and practical values in designing evacuation system, developing and optimizing evacuation plans.

In this paper, we for the first time consider the space-time network coding (STNC) to propose a novel cooperative data dissemination strategy in the time-division multiple access (TDMA) manner for the vehicle network, to overcome the short-comings of the traditional network coding (NC) techniques with carrier sense multiple access/collision avoidance (CSMA/CA) protocol, i.e., high signal detection complexity and channel collision problem. An optimal relay selection strategy in the procedure of cooperative data dissemination is proposed to maximize the average system capacity for the data dissemination. In a addition, a suboptimal relay selection strategy is put forward to reduce the computation complexity and thus makes the developed data dissemination strategy more practical. Compared with the non-cooperative data dissemination, the proposed cooperative data dissemination via STNC has better performance in terms of the average system capacity, the average user equipment (UE) capacity, and the average data dissemination delay.

The design and control methods of robotic system for vascular interventional surgery is studied in this paper. By considering the characteristics of vascular interventional surgery and operation habits of surgeon, a master-slave remote control catheter system is presented. The system consists of three parts: the operation handle, the catheter manipulator and the host computer. The operation handle is designed to simulate the surgeon's surgical procedure, and the catheter manipulator tracks the handle's movements in both translation and rotation directions. Real time communication between the operation handle and the catheter manipulator has been built based on the host computer. Effectiveness and speed tracking performance between the catheter manipulator and the handle was validated by simulation experiments on a human vascular model.

Although traditional bag-of-words model has shown promising results for action recognition, it takes no consideration of the relationship among spatio-temporal points;furthermore, it also suffers serious quantization error. In this letter, we propose a novel coding strategy called context-constrained linear coding (CLC) to overcome these limitations. We first calculate the contextual distance between local descriptors and each codeword by considering the spatio-temporal contextual information. Then, linear coding using contextual distance is adopted to alleviate the quantization error. Our method is verified on two challenging databases (KTH and UCF sports), and the experimental results demonstrate that our method achieves better results than previous methods in action recognition.

Discovering temporal patterns and changes in tobacco use has important practical implications in tobacco control. This paper presents one of the first comprehensive international studies of seasonal smoking patterns based on online searches performed. Using periodogram and crosscorrelation, we find that smoking-related search behavior shows strong seasonality effect across countries. In addition, there are significant pairwise associations between such seasonality in different countries.

Micro-simulation becomes more and more important in the Intelligent Transportation systems (ITS) research, because it can provide detailed descriptions of the system. For a multi-agent systems (MAS) modeling of an ITS, the computation burden is large, as it involves the computation of the state changing of all the agents. And, there are many multi-objective optimization problems in the ITS research. In this paper, we solve the traffic light signaling optimization problem and we take the average delay time and the average stop times as two objectives. We use a famous method of Non-dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm II (NSGA-II). As NSGA-II can be viewed as an intelligent way of running a number of micro-simulations, usually the computation burden is huge. Graphics Processing Units (GPUs) have been a popular tool for parallel computing. The real transportation system runs in parallel and we think that a parallel tool is more suitable for the simulation and optimization of the system. We test GPU based NSGA-II method on a 4 intersection lattice road network, and on the 18 intersection road network of the Zhongguancun area of Beijing. Compared with the CPU version, the GPU version implementation achieves a speedup factor of 21.46 and 27.64 respectively.
