This paper proposes three training strategies based on impedance control, including passive training, damping-active training and spring-active training, for a 3-DOF lower limb rehabilitation robot designed for patients with paraplegia or hemiplegia. controllers with similar structure are developed for these training strategies, consisting of dual closed loops, the outer impedance control loop and the inner position/velocity control loop, known as position-based impedance control method. Simulation results verify that position-based impedance control approach is feasible to accomplish the training strategies.

A distributed sampled-data based protocol is proposed for the average consensus of double-integrator multiagent systems with switching topologies and communication noises. The proposed protocol uses information from two aspects: the agent's own state and the relative states between the agent and its neighbors. Due to the existence of communication noises, the relative states cannot be obtained accurately. To deal with this difficulty, a time-varying consensus gain is employed to attenuate the noise effect. Under the proposed protocol, it is proved that sufficient conditions for ensuring mean square average consensus are: the consensus gain satisfies the stochastic approximation type condition and the communication topology graph at each sampling instant is a balanced graph with a spanning tree. Finally, a simulation example is provided to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed consensus protocol.

This paper addresses the mechatronic issues of a novel bio-inspired robotic dolphin capable of fast swimming. The robot mechanically consists of a dorsoventrally propulsion mechanism, a turning mechanism, and an up-and-down mechanism. Since the swimming robot is predominantly driven by a series of DC motors and servo motors, the possible alternative to improve the swimming speed is to maximize the motor efficiency. Based on this idea, a new slider-crank centered flapping mechanism with the continuous rotation of the DC motor is proposed to mimic the oscillations of the posterior body and the fluke. Finally, the preliminary robotic prototype is built to validate the effectiveness of the formed robotic design ideas.

The longitudinal acceleration control plays a very important role in the design of active safety-system of vehicle, which includes driving and braking controlsystems. In this paper, two different control laws are designed in the engine and brake controller. A fuzzy gain scheduling scheme of proportional-integral-derivative (PID) control law is used in the throttle control, and the parameters of the fuzzy inference system are optimized by particle swarm optimization algorithms. A hybrid feed-forward & feedback control law is applied in the brake control. The vehicle model is constructed for simulation in Matlab/Simulink to test the strategy of throttle controller, brake controller and the combination performance of the two controllers, respectively. The results show that the rapid response and high-precision performance have been achieved in the vehicle longitudinal acceleration control.

In this paper, a new optimal control method is proposed for discrete-time nonlinear systems based on iterative adaptive dynamic programming (ADP) algorithm with approximation error. In each iteration of the proposed algorithm, the iterative control law and iterative performance index function cannot be accurately obtained. The convergence conditions of the iterative ADP algorithm are presented. According to the convergence conditions, the iterative performance index functions are proved to be convergent to a small neighborhood of the optimal performance index function. Finally, a simulation example is given to illustrate the performance of the proposed method.

In the literature of human action recognition, despite promising results have been obtained by the traditional bag-of-words model, the relationship among spatio-temporal points has rarely been considered. Furthermore, serious quantization error also exists in this kind of strategy. In this paper, we propose a novel coding strategy named contextual Fisher kernels to overcome these limitations. We add a Gaussian function to represent contextual information into the generative model. In this way, our method explicitly considers the spatio-temporal contextual relationships between interest points and alleviates quantization error. Our method is verified on two challenging datasets (KTH and UCF sports), and the experimental results demonstrate that our method achieves better results than the state-of-the-art methods in human action recognition.

In traditional bag-of-words method, each local feature is treated evenly for representation. One disadvantage of this method is that it is not robust to noise, which makes the performance impaired. In this paper, a novel human action recognition approach which learns weights for features is proposed, where each feature is assigned a weight for human action representation. These weights are learned jointly with discriminative model. There are two advantages of our model. First, small weights are assigned to noise, which can help to reduce the effect of noise on representation of human action. Second, discriminative features, which are critical for human action recognition, are assigned large weights. Experimental results demonstrate the advantages of the proposed method.

Cloud classification plays an essential role in a large number of applications. However, this issue is particularly challenging due to the extreme appearance variations under different atmospheric conditions. In this paper, a novel descriptor named illumination-invariant completed local ternary pattern (ICLTP) is proposed for cloud classification. The proposed descriptor effectively handles the illumination variations by introducing illumination invariant factor. Furthermore, the Quadratic-Chi metric, which is more suitable for comparing the difference between two histograms, is applied instead of Chi-Square metric. The experimental results demonstrate the superior performance of our strategy on two challenging cloud databases. Besides cloud classification, we further validate the proposed ICLTP operator on traditional texture classification, which show the good generalization ability.
